Children would play with toys like this in the Temple while their parents attended Puja- prayer and act out in play. what they see at Hindu celebrations like Durga day when horses pull carriages around the Temple grounds and Village with the deity of the festival in the carriage for all to see. This is an antique solid metal bronze horse and carriage temple toy that has the original dark patina. This toy dates from the last half of the 19th century. It came from an estate auction and I have not cleaned it. It has working wheels that still roll and the wheels turn independently of the axles. The toy comes in two pieces that fit together and measure 9 1/2" long when connected. The carriage measures 7" tall x 4" wide x 6 1/2" long with extensions. The horse measures 4" tall x 5" long x 4" wide and it is designed with saddle and harness.
