From Karnataka and an I believe 19th Century proposition in every sense. The mask is conceived as Shiva with a crown of cobras, this one exceptionally well modeled within the vernacular aesthetic of the region and far better than the smaller worn and damaged inferior versions typically offered. The piercing on one of the ears still has an old partial lining of forged iron; there is also the remnant ... moreof an ancient iron mounting bolt at the throat. This particular Hindu necessity of worship is both a classic example of a scholarly identified variety and art, and similar examples may be seen in the Figuel Collection at the Peabody-Essex Museum. Dr. Leo Figuel's"Ritual Bronzes of Maharashtra and Karnataka Including the Bhuta Region" is a standard scholarly reference on the subject. If you know the genre and understand the significance of these masks, the offered beauty needs no further descriptors. Well, I should mention there is no skimping on bronze with this particular mask…it weighs about 9 1/2 pounds. I actually have one more of these large masks from the same estate(that one of Khandoba or Mallana) offered separately…see my listings for this other. Condition is quite fine with a genuine aura of time to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly. This fine Antique Indian incense burner I am not certain of its age but possibly 18th century but at least early 19th century. The incense burner is made of solid bronze with the base being made in the form of a sacred cow with a closed flower bud mounted on its back that opens up to reveal the cup for the burning of incense as shown in the photos, the incense burner is very good quality with great detail and nice patina with age, the flower bud opens by twisting the bud anti-clockwise the unscrews the bud and allows it to open as seen in the photos, the bud can then be partially closed to have the smoke from the burner come through the bud, the incense burner measures 7.5 inches high and in good condition apart from one flower bud segment is missing as shown and general minor wear and tear with age

Description ANTIQUE LATE 18TH TO EARLY 19TH CENTURY MUGHAL INDIAN FINE CAST BRONZE SCRIBES INK POT HEIGHT 6.5CM This antique circa late 18th to early 19th century Mughal Indian finely cast bronze scribes ink well- ink pot. Is of squat rounded form with deep cog tooth cut pattern around the outside, three applied angular lugs and it stands on three shaped feet. CONDITION This lovely old piece has good old patination to the surfaces. It has an inlaid patch to the casting on the collar, done at the time of manufacture.
