Description This antique circa 19th century Agra India Pietra Dura alabaster marble dish. Is inlaid with a Mughal style floral design in semi-precious hard stones like lapis lazuli, malachite, carnelian, jasper(various patterns and colours) also mother of pearl and various marbles in shades of black, grey, khaki, brown etc. This lovely old piece is unmarked and it is in good condition with no missing pieces or damage. It has an engraved glass trumpet or epergne shaped top which stands in a silver foot bearing a traditional Indian style of repousse decoration. There is a makers mark to the side of the foot(see photos) But the base is weighted to provide stability so I cannot tell what weight of silver is actually used. Size It measures 11” 28.5cm) tall. This is a most unusual ox bone carving. I am not sure who it represents. But there is a small face emerging from the top of the main figure's head with a cobra snake. This particular type of vessels is very rare as the body is mounted with a lions head as the spout is usually mounted with a cow's head. The silver mounts are thick and detailed. Chased all-over with scrolling leaves, pull-off lid and circular filled foot with typical foliate bands, swinging handle beautifully engraved, the impressive realistic figural spout. The mystic and famous Coco-de-mer(literally"coconut-of-the-sea" comes from a palm tree once believed to grow in the depths of the sea. antique 19thc indian persian sabre sword tulwar shamshir marked relic british
I can tell you very little about this sword except that it is old and likely military. Likely made for indian regiment serving with colonial british forces but i am not certain od anything regarding it, the hilt grip is made from hardwood which appears teak to me but also i am not certain of that, the blade is however scarf welded and the join is just past the 2nd mark furthest down towards the tip of the blade, i did etch and repolish after and it did show a clear join that i know to be a scarf weld, the front end of the blade is certainly laminated steel and shows a damascus pattern when etched, this does not show in my pics because after etching i gave the sword a basic clean and basic polish with 800 grit paper and water, there are some interesting marks on the blade and it also has a typical yelmen as seen on many indian indo persian ... moreand afghan swords, the knuckle guard is marked with a number 5 which makes me think this sword is British military indian from the colonial wars when many indian soldiers served with the brits, there is active rust apparent but i am sure someone out there would like this old relic for restoration, rare or not i do not know anything about but maybe someone could shed some light on this old sword and where it is from and what date. size is. 35-3/4 ins total length, blade 30-1/2 ins. This is a large 19th century Indian carving in ox bone of a lady carrying water pots on her head. This is a good carving. Please examine the photos. The carving is mounted on a 19th century wooden base. Which would have been original to the carving. This would predate the later early 20th century Indian ox bone carvings. Possibly Krishna Kaliyadamana, shown battling with the Kaliya serpent holding a flower in his right hand. The detail in the painting is exceptional. And originates from the South Indian region of Thanjavur. It is on mica. Contained under glass with a card back, and dates to circa 1820. History of Tanjore: Tanjore painting is a classical South Indian painting style. Which was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur(Tanjore in English) and spread across the adjoining Tamil country.
