American, c.1740-60 This is a small scale Queen Anne desk on bracket feet with magnificent inlays. An example of a highboy with sectioned inlays such as this is illustrated in Levy Galleries' In Search of Excellence. The desk has acquired a beautiful warm amber glow over the years. And is consistent throughout. Many of these pieces have lost their bracket feet. This example is absolutely pure; everything in place as it should be, and its not surprising to see its original brasses as many of these early cotter pin examples have long ... moresince disappeared. Note the close-up of the engraved brass. The interior has a sycamore veneer over its original drawers. As a contrasting variation, and its straightforward interior, which never had a prospect door, is similar to a veneered Queen Anne desk illustrated in Levy Catalog. Volume IV. Also note the superiority of the veneer patterns over the simplistic one in the Levy example. These desks were obviously meant to be kept closed with interiors relatively functional. It is with pride that we show a full-blown veneered Queen Anne example retaining all essential parts. The only replacements are the hinges and the lock. Which are often times replaced through usage. It is what is known as a spinet desk, which were first created in the 1600's and fell out of favor in the 1930's. Desk has decorative scroll ironworking on the top and bottom. And ornate bronze hardware pulls. Inside features 2 drawers and 1 center and 2 side cubbies. Bottom drawer extends almost the entire length of desk. Measures 45L X 19"D X 35"H. Looks to be mahogany burl veneer. But it could be walnut burl on desk front. Has some scratches and one small spot where the veneer is missing. But overall this desk is in very good condition considering it is an old piece. Finished in a rich brown polish.

Old topper probably off of a bed but would make a nice wall or door pediment. Painted with an old coat of light green paint over walnut wood. The crest is very deeply carved with the curved top part protruding out about 3 1/2" from the face. Has no damage except a chip which is in the back so really a non issue. Mostly solid walnut construction with book matched burl veneer on desktop and back of gallery and burl veneer on drawer fronts. Drawer fronts are approx. 1 1/4" thick. Photos tell most of the story. 48" wide. 28.5" deep, 44.5" tall, writing surface is 30.5" from floor. There is a bit of filler in a couple molding joints and the veneer of writing surface has a couple of age cracks, one missing turned spindle at each back corner of gallery, all easily enough seen in the photos. I have up for sale a gorgeous matching pair of Antique circa 1870s or there abouts Victorian Walnut Side Chairs. Very unusual upper section featuring carved serpents. The chairs are walnut with burl veneer accents. Eastlake spoon carving and ball top finials. The chairs are in Superb Condition- appear to have been refinished and reupholstered at sometime in the past. This would have been done many years back as the lovely woman that I purchased these from was well into her 80s and probably done this back in the 50s at the time when they moved into their home. They were cherished and extremely well cared for any use wear is most meager-condition wise impossible to get any better than this. The chairs each stand approx 38" tall.Approx 19" wide across the front of the set, approx 18" from the ground to the top of the seat, approx ... more18-3/4" across the wood frame on the top of the chairs back. Just found at an estate sale here in Boston a really really nice and completely original American Federal 1820s writing desk with side drawer. Nice Period inkwells. Amazing condition for being almost 200 years old. Nice period piece and very hard to find. All of the hinges are strong including the writing compartments. Nice ivory inlay on the skeleton key face and a wonderful lock mechanism. I've been told this is military because of all of the brass reinforcements. I think it still could be a desk for very wealthy individuals. the very long drawer pulls out smoothly and on very solid condition. Great dove tailing and nice chamfered areas on the drawers backside. Both ends have a drawer handle but only one opens it up. The writing surface blotter board looks original. The last owner appears to have been an Elizabeth M Updike. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. Price lists and pictures of hardware which me thinks was probably to address the missing handle on the one side of the lap desk. Here is a very nice vintage French Boulle style desk.Most probably a post 1950 reproduction,in overall good condition with some minor condition issues as follows.There is some delamination or"bubbling" of the veneer on a couple legs,see pics,as well as some minor scuffs and wear as seen in pics.The drawers have a burled walnut veneer and the desk has beautiful brass fittings.The drawers have locks however I do not have the key to lock them. This is an incredible antique inkwell/desk set! Composed of a burled walnut tray with a large blackened pen slot. Blackened sides and black leather-covered bottom w/wooden bun feet, a pair of coiled bronze snakes for a handle, two fitted brass ink wells lined in velvet, and a pair of cut crystal inkwells, with cut crystal stoppers. The inkwells don't match, nor do the crystal stoppers belong to this set, BUT looks-wise, everything matches and goes perfectly. An exquisite example of everyday 19th century tools! Unsure of maker. From the mid-late 1800s. No damage other than a few minor scuffs. And"mismatched" crystal inkwells/stoppers. The leater bottom cover is in fairly rough shape. 8 3/4" long x 5" wide x 3 1/2" tall.
