The secretary is in fair condition, and unfortunately has some ... moreissues. The shelves are loose within the bookshelf / Vitrine section although the glass is intact on the front of the door. The secretary has a mirror, that is on the top at the right side and unbelievably gorgeous carved details and applied accents all throughout. It also has the original metal hardware, which is absolutely incredible and ornate as well. The front door of the secretary that would open down as a writing service has been broken off, and in half horizontally, however, the hinges are intact and it could easily be repaired. This door is 14" top to bottom, 20" wide. There is a lot of light staining and wear as well as scratches and dings to the finish.

Additional storage is found below the desk area consisting of an area with a ornate door measuring 20" x 14 1\2" deep. The drawer below this storage area measures 2" x 14 1\2" deep x 5" High. To the left of the desk is a tall shelf area with four adjustable shelves for storage or acting as a bookcase again having fine ornate wood carving over the glass door front. The ornate carvings on the front of the fold-down desk and upper glass door appear Victorian. Work is needed for refinishing this piece to bring it back to its original ... morebeauty. Some wooden back pieces shown in front. Need to be fixed to the back of the desk area and one more missing piece to make the back complete. finally for sale a very rare model r j horner double secretary or side by side bookcase with a wonderful very thick drop front and a great set of cubbies. i have been collecting antiques for 5 decades and have owned 100's of r j horner pieces and have seen thousands. But this is the only double secretary by him like this one i have ever seen. maybe i have not been at the right place or right time and you may own 20 of them, but this is the only one i have seen and therefore i believe it to be a very rare model. at any rare it is a great piece, original finish as you can see the finish is crazing a good bit. the grain and color of the piece is great with a great patina so i would not recommend stripping it under any circumstance. as you see hopefully the secondaries are birdseye maple which about every mahogany horner piece i have has ... morebirdseye. my camera is old, i am old and the pictures suck. they are too dark and do not show the huge lions head in the top well nor the standing griffins under the drop front. the top drawer is contoured serpentine top to bottom and the two lower drawers concave end to end. the freeze(sp) at the top and sides is contoured serpentine top to bottom and there is a neat scroll over the top of the big griffin on top with carved ends. there are ionic twisted columns on either side of the curved glass upper door compartment. the piece at the top and bottom has great lines and form concave forms in the center of the top and bottom sections. everything original as far as i know including hardware. i have owned this piece many years and it cost a pretty penny way back when. the best i remember, it has inventory nos. on the back and it used to have a piece of an r j horner paper label on the back. i have not looked at its back for longer than many of you have been alive and it is too full and heavy for me to move to check if it is still there, however, i guarantee it to be r j horner at his finest. it is quite heavy. when i moved it years ago i struggled, doubtful i can budge it now. it h

Antique EMPIRE-STYLE SECRETARY-BOOKCASE - Large Size
Offered for sale is this beautiful large antique secretary-bookcase in gorgeous solid wood. We think it is cherry. But will leave it to the lucky new owner to decide. The desk base is 44-1/2 inches high x 38-1/2 inches wide x 23-1/2 inches deep at its widest point. The top of the esk is 13 inches deep. The drop front reveals a complete contingent of pigeon holes and drawers. There are slide supports on either side that pull out to uphold the weight of the drop front, which becomes the writing surface. Below the desk are three deep storage drawers. The top drawer has hidden finger holds under the front of the drawer, and the lower two drawers have wooden knobs. The upper bookcase portion is 40 inches high x 34 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches deep. The beautiful molding at the top extends in both width and depth, and measures 13-1/2 inches deep ... morex 42 inches wide. There are two shelves plus the floor of the bookcase(making the third shelf) and the doors feature six panes of original blown glass. The key to the bookcase is present and correct. The bookcase affixes to the desk with long screws through the floor of the bookcase. This is a most handsome and imposing piece, and our photos do not do it justice. From research I have done on the Internet I believe that this is an antique mahogany Chippendale style secretary bookcase with drop down desk and claw and ball feet. There are three shelves on the upper bookcase with original glass door. It has four drawers below the drop off desk. It is in excellent condition. Everything in its original state. There is one key for the bookcase. This has been in my mother's home for as long as I can remember. There are no labels on the back. The only problem that I see is the center decoration on top is loose. There are no other outstanding problems. This is local pick-up only or you may arrange for shipping. This piece was purchased in England in 1970. It was purchased at Harrods. At that time they had an annex for antiques. This was a functional piece of furniture and has great patina. The hand carved tudor rose crests are beautiful as is the leaded glass. It stands over 87 inches tall. The base measures 39"L x 18"W x 40"H. The top measures 41"L x 10"W x 47"H. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character- mars. Wear and shrinkage separations from age- see photos. Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false. They drop to form a desk top. This style of desk was often called a"butler's desk" in a large household, the butler was the head of staff and kept records in a desk like this.
