It has four dove tail drawer going down the left-hand side and four going down the right-hand side. The center drawer has round dove tail as expected from the Eastlake era. It has burl walnut trim on the fronts with an ogee bevel edge around the routed top. It has a black felt interior on the writing surface that is nice. The finish on the sides is amazing. It has panel sides, rope twisted molding, detail cast brass hardware, escutcheons are intact. There are no keys or locks. The desk is 48 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 30 inches tall. It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly ... moremahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. There is a small chip in the veneer on the left front corner(photo#3) There is a 1/2" segment of the pewter'stringing line' that is missing in the same area. There are some cracks in the veneer on the top. The left side of the top and the front. There are cracks in the interior linings of the box. This is a beautifully handcrafted Antique English Writing Slope or Travel Desk. It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly mahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not ... moreappear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. There is a small chip in the veneer on the left front corner(photo#3) There is a 1/2" segment of the pewter'stringing line' that is missing in the same area. There are some cracks in the veneer on the top. The left side of the top and the front. There are cracks in the interior linings of the box. Antique Slope Portable Writing Lap Desk dated inside 1898
Up for auction is this lovely antique slope lap desk. It is not as fancy as some I've seen but this one has writings on one of the boards and a blue ink bottle. There is a date handwritten inside the box of May 11. 1898. There are 11 different names written inside the box along with where they came from. Most of the names list a town in Maine, one list Massachusetts and the other New Hampshire. It's so interesting and full of history! This lap desk has a blue felt writing surface and comes with a small blue ink bottle. This was an Maine estate sale buy. The box measures 11" x7-1/2" and 3-3/4 inches tall. What a little treasure! This is a very old item. It is not mint. The wooden box is sound, no cracks or breaks. The blue felt in side has some ink staining and wear spots. The wooden panels have writing on them. This is a lovely antique hinged desk/writing table with a wooden box pencil holder which was purchased from an estate. The desk measurements are as follows: 15” deep 14-3/4” wide 4-3/16” high The wooden pencil box measures 10-1/4” long 3” wide 1-1/4” high As far as I can tell the box has its original finish and is in excellent vintage condition. There is a small area on one of the edges side where about ½” finish has been lightly scraped but I imagine a little Old English would touch this up. This solid wood piece of American history is made of solid birch wood and dovetailed joints throughout. The dovetails are perfect and this desk just glows. VERY NICE ANTIQUE FOLD OUT WRITING SLOPE/ DESK- LATE 1800's? MAHOGANY? Up for sale is this very nice writing slope. We don't know the age of this item but it looks like it's from the late 1800's. It might be oak or mahogany. But whatever it is it's very nice. It has a little drawer below the writing slope area. The slope folds out and has a leather surface, this may have been replaced at some point. The hinges on the side also don't look original and were probably replaced. You can tell around the hinges where the wood failed and they replaced the hinges. The top flips up too to allow access to the slots for papers and envelopes that is in the back. Behind the writing slope is a wider area to hold other things. We've tried to show how the whole thing works in the first five pictures. The top has a lock but it doesn't ... morehave a key. The drawer has a lock on it and it does have the key as you can see in the pictures. It's very nicely done. The drawer is dovetail mortised on the sides. They would take the legs off and take the top of the desk with them to a different destination by carriage or wagon. This desk has been in our family since about 1975, as it was bought at the Red Baron Auction in Atlanta the first or second year they opened by my father. Edwardian Mahogany Writing Table with Drop Leaves England. First half of the 20th Century, Brass Mounted with lifting Architect-style writing surface Item# 120012QIP07B This is a beautiful antique writing table. Probably crafted in England of the Edwardian influence, though later than the period. The solid boards of mahogany have brilliant grains, the mid-most center of the table lifting to create an angled writing surface. The interior has an interesting mechanism design, using a button on the back of the table to depress a little wooden catch, allowing the table top to lift and remain propped until the button is depressed again. At the back, a small compartment can be opened when the top is in lifted position, revealing several compartments and an old glass inkwell. On either side, the mahogany leaves lift on brass hinges, lifted on mahogany ... morewings that swing outward. The front of the table has a little hand dovetailed drawer with original round ring hardware. The table rests over tapered legs terminating in spade feet of the Hepplewhite influence. This is a precious little decorative piece, bringing great visual interest to any study or office setting, also being an excellent side table in a formal sitting area as it is quite unique and versatile. In overall outstanding condition with only the most minor of blemishes, sturdy and strong for regular functional use, this is a great find for any interior decorator or anyone looking to improve the variety of a room in their home. Antique Dark Wood One Drawer Writing Desk
This is a beautiful hand made wood writing desk/ console table. The wood appears too be oak but it has had a dark stain applied making it hard to tell for sure. The stain appears to have been applied a long time ago and really does bring out the grain and gives the table a gorgeous dark color. Hand made. The craftsmanship is awesome. The one drawer has the original, very ornate drawer pull that appears to be brass. The photos will let you see how beautiful this knob is. As with any table of this age, it has a a few marks and scratches on top but overall is in great condition. No wobble and very sturdy. This will make a great office desk(in fact my wife almost commandeered it for her office) entry way table, or as an eye-catcher in a foyer or living room. Exciting antique French writing desk dated between late 1800's and early 1900's. Stamped Paris France. Solid wood with leather writing top. Edges are adorned with brass ormolu. Description: A gorgeous antique French silver writer's set. Comprising of a page turner and dip pen. Tipped by a carved handle and blade, both feature an exquisite silver mount embellished in finely detailed neoclassical ornamentation. The motif is centered by the figure of a majestic swan, portrayed with wings outspread and neck curled in a graceful pose. Backed by Grecian laurel sprigs and residing atop stylized scrolling foliate tipped by rosettes. Cascading down the handle are laurel drapes with pillaring. The decor illustrates such superb craftsmanship and whimsical charm. Page turner measures 10 3/4" in length; with the dip pen or quill measuring 8 3/8" including nip) In very good condition.
