Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

It has been refinished in a medium to satin sheen gloss dark reddish-brown mahogany stain. This desk has hand-cut dovetails across the top, like the early construction desks do, a breadboard writing surface that opens up to reveal two slide supports and a gorgeous interior with curved dovetail drawers, a raised beveled center door and center column drawers. It even has a key. The base has curved front drawers with wooden knobs, all dovetail, and the pillar drawers across the top, which means there are two smaller drawers across the base and three drawers in the bottom. There are also heavy-duty detailed claw feet. The overall size is 36 inches wide, 21 inches at the deepest point, and 42 inches high. Has turned legs with a slant front desk top that lifts up and a secretary style top with doors that open and cubbies inside. Not sure of history of this piece. We obtained it from an estate sale in Johnston County, North Carolina. One of the most interesting thing about this desk is that in the upper corner of the right door there is a piece of paper taped inside that lists the presidents of the United States and has 24 of them with Woodrow Wilson being the last one and the date listed is 1893. The dimensions of the desk are 45" tall x 30" wide x 17" deep. The one thing I found on it is that there are a couple of small pieces of veneer missing from the edge of the fold down desk front. My Mom had bought this desk back in 1990 and I think the pieces were missing then. There is also a small white smug on the front of the bottom drawer,that is a smug of white paint. My Mom apparently put it there by accident while painting something else. I do have the key for the lock for the desk top but the lock itself does not work. A beautiful early Secretary Bookcase Slant Front Desk Lined with Original Wallpaper! Known as a Plantation Desk here in the South. This is in two pieces. The upper section is about 200 years old lined in Original Wallpaper. The glazed cabinet has a single glass door with nine panes. The glass is exceptionally wavy. Inside are three shelves for books or your favorite primitive smalls. The top is flat with double molded crown. It is made of Southern Heart Pine. Walnut and Poplar hand planed wood. Using a 1760 design. I created the base with early mixed woods. The case is dovetailed and is pegged with wooden pegs. The slant front has bread board ends and opens out to a writing shelf supported by two pull-out slides. Inside is an early cubby with ten compartments. The brass escutcheon is early. Massachusetts c. 1770 Provenance from the Israel Sack Collection w/ original label signed by Israel Sack in top drawer Held in a single collection since 1931(provenance details available upon request) Item# 409LXI13S A remarkable work of art from the Newburyport area of Massachusetts. This fine American Chippendale desk is clearly executed by a craftsman of some skill. The case is joined in a manner typical of the work center, the top with tidy exposed dovetails along both sides, the bottom board likewise dovetailed into the sides of the case. The drawer blades are set into the sides of the case behind a thin applied stile on either side, these carved with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding around the drawers. The backboards are bevelled around ... moreall three edges to set flush against the back, affixed at regular intervals with mostly original iron sprigs. Each drawer is crafted with utmost precision and care, the complex blocked drawer sawn from a very thick board in a manner that leaves the drawer light and agile while the beautiful mahogany plank maintains strength and stability. These slide smoothly in and out of the case with little friction or wiggle. The lid lowers to rest on a pair of mahogany lopers revealing an attractive fitted interior with six pigeon-hole compartments over three small drawers over two large drawers and an open storage compartment flanked by a pair of blocked drawers with half-shell carvings. A pair of document drawers flank the middlemost pigeon-hole and drawer, these with beautiful turned columns closely related to the Newburyport work center, one inscribed"William Holker/ Mooney's Block Water Street" The entire case rests over ogee bracket feet and conforming stepped molding, the lower 1 3/4" of all feet having been replaced in the early 20th century. Cherry & Mahogany Chippendale-style Slant Front Desk
Chippendale-style desk. Deep. Rich patina. Cherry front has turned a deeper brown due to age and oxidization. Appears to be mahogany on the sides. Four graduated drawers; interior has secret compartment. Hand dovetailed and planed. Ball& Claw feet likely replaced. We repaired the front piece of both support rails using an antique restorer. The piece was purchased at an Eastern Shore auction many years ago. It has been in a non-smoking home with other fine antiques. Although I have specified that this is for local pick-up. Italian Inlaid Burl Fruitwood Slant Fall Front Desk and Matching Chair
Continental slant or fall front desk. Made with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring burl fruit woods. This small decorative piece was likely intended as a ladies' writing desk. The fall front opens to a writing surface(that has a water stain) four drawers, and a compartment with a door. There are two doors below the writing surface each with scroll work inlay and ornate meta pulls, that open to a storage space with a shelf. The left front leg was broken and was repaired The desk has no other breaks or visible repairs. Only minimal wear and crackling to the surfaces consistent with age and use. Please examine the pictures provided. I will supply additional pictures if requested. The desk is 35" tall. 34" wide, and 17" deep. The matching chair is in very good condition. EXCEPTIONAL AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SLANT FRONT DESK OVER CLAW FEET Salem or Boston Massachusetts. C. 1770-90 Item# 211CKJ26F This very fine American Chippendale desk almost certainly originates from the Salem or Boston work centers in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the 18th Century. The dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany was clearly selected with great care. The smooth and undulating lines of the boards understated and subtle, flowing from one drawer to the next and ultimately into the slanting desk surface. The desk top is constructed with a solid horizontal plank flanked by groove-and-tongue vertical strips, lifting smoothly over period replaced brass hinges and resting on the projecting lopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby ... moreholes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer features a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it, a design common to these work centers, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards laid horizontally and half-lapped, behind which a pine support runs perpendicular to the boards, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. Each below larger proportionally to the one above, sliding in and out of the beaded frame. For your Bidding consideration in this Auction is an Antique Walnut(the estate I acquired this from said it was walnut. Another person said it may be mahogany so please view photos) Slant Front Desk. In researching the desk, a very similar desk recently sold on Ebay and was stated to have been made circa 1770 in Philadelphia which is where I am getting my estimated date and place of manufacture from as in all of my research it most closely resembles that one. Please view photos to determine for yourself an estimate of age and manufacturer dating. The desk has 2"Secret" compartments, one is hidden as a false bottom in one of the drawers, the other hidden in the cabinet beneath one of the drawers/ May be others I haven't found. Note the large 4 bottom drawers are graduated in size and pencil numbered. I do not have a good way to weigh it so this is just an estimate The condition for age overall is good. A few things to note is there are as follows: one of the brass key hold covers is missing. May have had a hinged door inside the cabinet at top, there is a very old"mouse hole" finger notch in the top drop front section giving easy access to open the desk, one of the decorative drawers inside the top section of the cabinet is missing the front and sides. I do not have a key for it. May also show a few other scratches and age related dings but overall a very solid, beautiful desk. I am offering this as pick up only as I have never packed a piece of furniture like this and would be nervous about not packing it correctly for shipping. I do work with a local UPS Store who does an excellent job though so am confident they will do a great job for you or you can pick it up or have your own shipper come and pick it up. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Chester County. Signed illegibly four times and dated 1807 Item# 411IQL13P This fine example of Eastern Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Almost certainly originating in Chester County, has a distinct air of ingenuity about it. A departure from the typical corinthian fluted corner columns seen on these cases, the desk employs a quartered column with three graduated divisions of double-ringing in completion of the drawer blades they flank. This effective treatment softens the facade and introduces a certain magnetic rural character to the form. The interior is exceptional. The deep writing surface edged by a scalloped molding conforming with the serpentine of the ten blocked front drawers beneath ten pigeon holes. Instead of employing a prospect door, the center of the interior ... moreis a complicated little box that is easily drawn from the center- over the pigeon holes in this box, the valance actually is a tiny hidden drawer. By removing the entire dovetailed box from the interior, a previously hidden document drawer becomes visible. On the front it is signed illegibly"J. Sh.f.p Rat. 1807" the same signature seen also on the two hidden document drawers that flank this drawer and the two hidden document drawers that flank these as well- to bring out the deepest document drawers, a long string is attached and can be tugged to bring these unseen pieces forward. The front of the desk is composed of a pair of lopers. The fronts of which are set on tiny dovetails and sunk into the blades, and four graduated drawers retaining their original locks and untouched structure with replaced brasses. The top and bottom of the case are openly dovetailed, the back of the case with untouched half-lapped planks retaining their original rosehead and cut nails and a nearly black level of oxidization throughout. French foot slant, front desk in original condition including the finish glue blocks support and bracket, just the way a purist would want to find it. This gorgeous piece came out of a Massachusetts Estate. The desk has nice patinated hardware. But not of the period. This desk has very elegant shaped feet and of full height giving the desk a very pleasing look. Hard to find a better one in the market dating from this 1805 period. This desk is untouched. So there are stress fractures all shown in the photos. This French foot chest is also very practical for daily use being 43 1/4" high and 40" wide by 20" deep. This sale is for a fantastic highly figured three-piece slant front tiger maple secretary desk. This desk is all hand made and took over two months to complete! It is all mortis and tenon construction with all of the tenon's being held in place with square walnut wooden pegs. Starting at the top with the bookcase section. It features crown and trim molding with hand made dentil molding. It has two doors which are also mortis and tenon with square walnut wooden pegs; there are two raised panels per door and two hand-turned tiger maple knobs with the turnbuckles attached to the knobs on the interior. Turning the knob rotates the turnbuckle which opens the doors. The doors also have two inlaid diamond escutcheons that are also walnut. It has the hand-chiseled cutouts for recessed antique locks as well as screw holes for the locks, but no ... morelocks are present. It has three large shelves that are hand beaded along the front edge. There is trim around the bottom edge of the book case attached to the top of the desk portion. Next is the compartment section of the desk. It has a mortis and tenon construction flip-down door with a single raised panel. It also has the hand inlaid walnut escutcheon and chiseled lock cutout. It has six gothic-style letter compartments on the interior and has nine all hand-dovetailed drawers below the cutouts. The drawer bottoms are all hand-planed with an antique hand plane and are also hand-chamfered. It has six small drawers over three larger with all hand-turned tiger maple knobs for each of the nine drawers. All of the screw holes are hand chiseled. There is also trim around the bottom of the desk compartment which is attached to the top of the desk. Finally. The desk portion. The desk is all mortis and tenon construction as well, being pinned with walnut pegs just like the rest of the desk. This Winthrop slant top ball and claw secretary desk dates from the 1940s. It has all the original brass Chippendale hardware on the front. As you open up the breadboard writing surface. Automatic extensions come out to support the writing lid and it also exposes a wonderful multi-cubby hole section with 3 deep drawers. This interior has a carved door storage area and two cleverly designed units behind multi turn spindle posts. When I was little my parents always used to hide things in those drawers and it took us years to figure out where they were. This desk was made by Maddox out of Buffalo. NY they were well known for their high quality and stylish furniture. It is simply stunning in its Ebony/black finish. It is large, yet perfect as a multi tasking piece of furniture for smaller homes or apartments. Drop draw front open/closes fine ... moreand gives you a large work surface which when closed this desk is perfect for a small space as it is slimmer than most. When drop front is down it measures 31 1/2" deep. Giving you a large writing/work area. Measures: 31 1/2" long x 10" deep. The top part, the middle is 17 1/2" deep and the bottom is 18 1/2" deep, it is 41 3/4" tall. There are 4 drawers that measure as follows: the top two are 3 3/4" tall, the bottom two are 5" tall. Having a more slender frame than many of the desks of the period. It is an object that does not impose itself on a room, but rather it's graceful and understated form bring depth and visual interest to whatever space it becomes a part of. With a deep and wonderfully oxidized early finish, preserved under many layers of glowing wax, the vibrant grains of the solid mahogany planks utilized in all primary surfaces are shown in their best light. The case itself is of simple construction. The sides dovetailed into the bottom, the top and sides joined with a blind dovetail to leave a smooth undisturbed top surface. The slant lid falls over original wrought ... moreiron hinges to rest on a pair of projecting lopers with original shaped brass pulls, revealing a handsomely fitted interior with a pair of pigeon-hole slots with scalloped valances flanking the fluted document drawers and molded prospect door. The document drawers are inoperable from the front, these being the first clue that the entire prospect section of the interior is actually a hidden compartment- by opening the prospect door and depressing a switch hidden in the top of the open space, the entire box of both document drawers and prospect door is released to reveal the hidden access to the document drawers from the back. Feet and chalk inscription to underside Item# 411MKP15V A remarkable work of art. This fine American Chippendale slant front desk features the very desirable"oxbow" or"serpentine" facade cherished in the best pieces. Hewn from incredibly thick mahogany logs, these drawers are sawn into shape with a continuous plank to achieve the fluid movement found in the case. The top drawer is particularly difficult to execute, as this retains much more of the mahogany and not only serpentines with the case but also is faceted along the top edge. Retaining it's brilliant polished brass batwing hardware, the desk remains in an outstanding state of preservation. These are crafted in the typical manner for the Northern Shore of Massachusetts- the pine frame is dovetailed along the front and back, the bottom deeply chamfered and set into rabbets in the sides of the drawer over which a thin pine runner is applied to create the groove. They slide easily in and out of the case over a few original and several replaced interior case runners, these nailed to the case from the inside. The interior is somewhat typical of the region. We are selling a lovely antique secretary drop front desk with an inlaid design on the front. As you can see the inlay pattern is quite nice and incorporates mother of pearl. The desk stands approximately 40" high by 28" wide by 15.5" deep. While the desk is a little rough around the edges- it could use a thorough cleaning and does have a number of scuffs and dings. As well as some loss to the back panel and the lower right edge of the front- it has a nice shape and patina with a little TLC will have a lot of use left to offer. Antique 1900-1950 Slant Drop Front Oak Secretary Desk - Lionhead
I am not an expert but an antique furniture appraiser looked at this piece recently and stated this is a unique desk that he's never seen one quite like it. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor.
