The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. They look to be from the late 1890's to the early 1900's. We are putting them up in 5 separate auctions. Check them all out. This is the third of the five Bullion collars. It is for Secretary and has the DEBORAH medal. This collar has no bullion fringe along its edging. We found this history of the C.E. Ward Co. on the internet: C.E. WARD COMPANY In 1891 Clyde E. Ward and his brother in law. Ed Stilson, paid four New London gentlemen $138 for their lodge rosette business. Shortly after this they receIved an order from the Odd Fellows Lodge for 600 bullion collars and the Ward-Stilson Company was on it's way! Mr. Ward had a gentleman from Columbus come up and show the two women on a treadle sewing machine how to do the bullion work since this was all new to them. They later added caps. Here is a fantastic original circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany may have been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when mahogany became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. The hardware is a later addition.possibly and most probably changed if and when the figured mahogany veneer was added in the very early 1800's. ... moreThe desk is supported by a bracket foot base. Walnut with raised and matched panels, the top has been re-varnished for durability. The balance of the original finish is very well preserved and has been waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its glowing patina. Opening the drop front reveals an interior in curly or"birdseye" maple with a tooled writing surface plus tiny drawers and cubicles. There is no key for the little locking drawer.
