Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

The burl walnut, which is treated to an elaborate finishing process, displays a rich complexion and grain, which are complemented wonderfully by solid brass hardware. The brown leather-inlaid desk, which locks with an accompanying key, also looks quite elegant, while the desk itself provides a variety of drawers and compartments for convenient office storage. Four exterior drawers, each built with sturdy dovetailed joints, also offer storage space, while the locking bookcase, which features individual pane glass doors, contains two shelves. 1801-1876 Home Secretary Information taken from Wikipedia: Thomas Henry Sutton Sotheron-Estcourt PC DL JP(4 April 1801– 6 January 1876) Known as Thomas Bucknall-Estcourt until 1839 and as Thomas Sotheron from 1839 to 1855, was a British Conservative politician. Sotheron-Estcourt was the eldest son of Thomas Bucknall-Estcourt. Member of Parliament(MP) for Devizes and Oxford University, son of Thomas Estcourt, Member of Parliament for Cricklade. His mother was Eleanor, daughter of James Sutton. He was educated at Harrow and Oriel College, Oxford. Estcourt was elected to Parliament as MP for Marlborough in 1829. He was elected to parliament again in 1835 as MP for Devizes. Switched to North Wiltshire in 1844, and continued in the Commons until 1865. This item has an emblem stuck into the unit of a Lions International pin. The unit appears to be made of bronze. On the bottom border are the engraved words"Joseph Sweeney Club Secretary 1959 60" The bottom base has a green material over it which is loose. The entire unit is in very good condition with no cracks or breaks. This is a great historical piece for any Lions International Historian or member. Empire -Neoclassical Style Secretary/Desk
Here is a EMPIRE/NEOCLASSICAL STYLE SECRETARY/DESK c. around 1850's to 1910. All beautifully carved claw-footed, with brass embellished details throughout. Original to the period, with gorgeous veneer top finish. All drawers have a keyhole lock, as does the flip-down desk, to reveal inset drawers all with ivory handle pulls, with an upper shelf for open storage inset. Although at the time of this production Ivory wasn't illegal; and ONLY a certain percentage pre-dated manufactured products may be sold with ivory. And as such this item is, with only 1% of material if that being the 5 small pulls to small inset drawers. The desk top is lined in a Hunter Green w/gold band details, and leather is in pretty good condition.as it was well-maintained for the period. Vintage Wood Drop Down Secretary Style w/ a Drawer & Ornate Handles Jewelry Box
Up for Auction! Real nice estate sale find! Very old wood jewelry box. It has a hinged drop down door on top and a pull out drawer on the bottom. It needs a detail cleaning and does have scratches on the body. You can see this in the pictures. The women I got this from said it was in her Grandma's bedroom since she could remember. Her grandma just passed at the age of 93. Very light weight style wood. The knobs have a real nice ornate design and the hinges are still in great working condition and are brass. The leaf designs in the corners of the top door are plastic. There is a lot of wear to this but. I believe, with the proper TLC, this can be a great piece to hold your vintage and antique jewelry. It measures 54.5 inches tall on a 27 inches wide by 13.6 inches deep base. It weighs over 80 pounds by itself without any packing materials. It uses solid rosewood ... morefronts. Sides, and base moldings on its thick, wood frame structure and features a swing down leather cover secretary desk platform with cubby hole slots and double drawers inside. It comes with its own antique skeleton key stamped Germany on it to use to open all brass locking drawers and cabinet door. All drawers are connected and interlocked with dovetails and feature protruding wood dowels to stick out of the back interior of the drawers to catch the drawers from pulling all the way out. Please read what I stated below about this gorgeous European cabinet's condition: Overall stable intact cabinet that is heavy strong and sturdy. There are wood crack splits on both sides of the cabinet that do not harm its integrity and is still all together and solid. The top roof of the cabinet was missing exposing the drawer below. Addicks pleads his case for promotion and apoligizes for going outside the chain of command. When Abraham Lincoln. Our noble President, called for 600,000 men last summer, I was a bookeeper with the City of Chicago. Feeling it my duty I immediately enlisted as a private in a battery of artillery. Through the influence of my father John E. Addicks esq. I was promoted to first lieutenant and then to a captain in my present regiment. He expresses his concern that his regiment's consolidation with the 156th would result in his losing rank and not allow him to support his family. He lays out his argument.
