James Francis Byrnes(1879-1972) Politician and jurist from South Carolina. Byrnes served in the House of Representatives from 1911 to 1925, the Senate from 1931 to 1941, as an Associate Justice in the Supreme Court from 1941 to 1942, as Secretary of State from 1945 to 1947, and Governor from 1951 to 1955. Peirce Dictation System Model 425 Secretary, Case, Accessories (circa 1957)
This auction is for a non-working Peirce Dictation System model 425 Secretary with carrying case and accessories. Made around 1957 by the Peirce Wire Recorder Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. U.S.A. This early type of dictation recorder uses a wide magnetic belt over which the recording head is moved linearly by a worm gear. The internal circuitry has three transistors. This recorder requires batteries that may no longer be available(despite appearances. It does NOT take two C-size batteries) The contents of this auction are as follows: Model 425 Secretary unit. Handheld combined microphone/speaker unit with power button. Tan-coloured leather carrying case with strap. Three spare Peirce Magnetic Belts. And one inside unit. Several recording index strips. A National Revenue Canada Customs and Excise form declaring the recorder unit on September ... more19. 1957, and an attached equipment lease document dated February 28, 1957. The condition of these items is as follows: 10 volts was applied to the battery terminals. And the handheld microphone/speaker unit was plugged into the recorder unit. When the power button was pressed. The motor moved the belt. The recording head moved along the magnetic belt, and the front indicator lamp glowed. In LISTEN mode. A click and quiet hissing could be heard from the speaker. However, no sounds could be recorded(DICTATE mode) and then played back(LISTEN mode) Even brushing the recording head with a magnetized strip of metal did not generate any sounds in the speaker while in LISTEN mode. The recorder has suffered the results of a leaking old battery. The original chrome plating on the terminals have turned green. And there are some stains and damage to the exterior paint(see photo) There is also some minor corrosion on the internal circuit board. All electrolytic capacitors encased in white ceramic have a crack in their case. This is probably due to the electrolyte corroding the foil layers over time and expanding to crack the case. Up for your consideration is a Wonderful Secretarial desk. With the Flint& Horner label on the back of this fine furniture. We place the date of this beautiful desk between, 1915 and the 1930's. giving this piece some serious history considering its origin is New York and its now on the West coast. This Excellent Secretarial Desk has 3 Skeleton key holes and 1 original Barrel skeleton key that comes with it. It has very few scratches. One on the left edge of the desk table, a very small ding on the 4th drawer to the right side center and a small scrape on the base just below the 4th drawers right handle. The desk support arm mechanism operates smoothly. Eagle claw and ball feet are in excellent condition. His inspirations drew upon an a wide variety of patterns and themes, which to name a few were.caryatids, winged gargoyles, northwind faces, cherubs, man-of-the-mountain, and winged griffins. Later in Life. In 1915. R.J. Horner merged his business with another inspired furniture producer, George Flint to form Horner and Flint though neither were officers of the company. Horner retired at the time of the merger but his son, Robert Horner Jr. managed the business for at least another year. Excellent Antique Oak Half Curio Cabinet Half Secretary PICK UP ONLY
This antique oak half curio cabinet half secretary is in great condition! It is approximately 100 years old. There is no documentation we just know that is has been in the family for 3 generations. With no documentation all the information I have is based on family stories. It is the original finish and the only marring is on one foot(shown in picture) The back appears to have one patch and the mirror is re-enforced(I do not know if that was done originally or later) Also there is some type of packing material visible on the back where the secretary and the curio meet. The curio cabinet is a curved door with adjustable shelves. This is the original glass! The secretary portion has the original mirror and carvings around the mirror. It has a drop down desk and slots for letters and pens behind the drop down portion. There are three drawers ... moreunderneath the desk. The bottom one curves slightly out and the top two are flat surfaced. There is an ink stain in the top drawer(shown in picture) It measures 70" tall. 36" long, and 12" wide. This antique is in excellent condition and would be a wonderful enhancement to any home! PICK-UP ONLY! Carlisle was born in what is now Kenton County, Kentucky, and began his public life as a lawyer. I have recently acquired a large assortment of these Cadets of Temperance ribbons. I am not an expert but I believe they are quite rare. The first item up for auction is a"Secretary" ribbon. This item has a metal pin at the top and the ribbon attached. There is some fraying at the bottom but is consistent with age. I'm not sure of the exact age of this item but there is a sticker from the manufacturer on the back with patent dates in 1893 and 1896. The manufacturer is Whitehead and Hoag in New Jersey.
