American Empire Crotch Mahogany Secretary Desk Opalescent Glass Pulls Gothic Influence circa 1830's Being presented for sale is this fantastic American Empire Crotch Mahogany Secretary Desk with Gothic Influence and Gorgeous Original Opalescent Glass Knobs. And unique spiral full columns flanking the drawers at the base Circa 1830's. This fine 19th century piece has its original wavy glass and original hardware with all the locks intact but the key just aids in opening the doors at the top and doesn't work the locks. This secretary desk does separate into two pieces for easier handling during shipping and moving. This secretary measures 76 1/2 inches tall.41 3/4 inches wide,24 inches deep at the base, 13 inches deep at the bookcase portion top and weighs approximately 150 lbs. The fold out writing surface measures 41 3/4 inches ... morewide by 19 inches deep and is 34 1/2 inches in height to the floor. This Empire desk early hand-cut dovetail joinery on the drawer ends and lovely crotch mahogany on the drawer fronts and doors and rests on four large bun feet. The original opalescent glass knobs are just gorgeous and sets of the uniqueness of this wonderful 19th century piece. This secretary is solid and tight. The drawers open and close smoothly. This piece does show some veneer chips and some areas where the veneer has been patched with newer veneer. This is very common in period Empire pieces of this age along with some slight age shrinkage cracks in the veneer. This does affect the functionality or integrity of this fine piece at all, please enlarge and examine the pictures for better detail. The green felt on the writing surface does show wear. The inner desk case and all drawers are dovetailed construction. The front dovetails of the drawers have been bulked up with added strips of wood that cover them up. but they are there! This beautiful example has a moss green baize inset top over a bank of three frieze drawers being raised on twin pedestals with column detailing on spread pad feet. The three top surface boards have carved dagroon edge. The six drawers are bow fronted with flame veneers, the original glass knobs reeded. Includes the lock to both center drawer, the drawer interiors in maple and pine. The cross stretchers are squared and flame mahogany veneered. Desk measures 31" tall by 54" wide by 33" deep. A most impressive antique. Circa 1900, solid mahogany French Empire(circa 1800, or Napoleonic) desk. It has twelve tapered column supports collared in ormolu brass. The plinth column bases are connected by four serpentine stretchers to a center oval with footrest. The case sides and front drawer have ormolu brass mounts with swords, wreaths, rosettes, anf palmettes. The drawer handles have rosettes. Desk measures 30-3/4" tall by 48" wide by 29-1/2" deep. The distance from bottom of drawer to floor is 24" Very good plus condition: mahogany boards without chips or cracks, original glossy finish. A vivid and active work, the brilliant mahogany veneers are burnished into a deep shine with the French polished finish, highlighted with gilded ormolu mounts throughout- these may or may not be original to the work, but their presence without a doubt elevates and completes the form. The delicate writing surface drops open under a heavy bolted steel lock, functional and retaining it's original ... morekey, revealing a selection of two small drawers flanking a larger central drawer. All five drawers are hand dovetailed oak secondary woods with a chamfered bottom set in grooves on either side and nailed(modern nail) along the back edge for stability. The writing surface is clean and remains in fine condition with a replaced leather top; the surface is probably not ideal for functional use, as the weight of arms and leaning would not be healthy for the long term preservation of the desk, but it is very much a stable and strong surface for presentation. Above the surface is a broad single drawer. Tucked beneath the mahogany top and flanked by beautiful round columns and seven-pointed stars on either corner. This drawer, as well as the drawer beneath the writing surface, is constructed in a manner identical to the interior drawers. Offered for sale. A very nice miniature lantern clock, for desk or table use. The clock has a brass case with turned feet, columns, and finials, pierced frets with engraved dolphins at the front, the top with a large bell, engraved dial with Roman numerals, and fancy steel hands. The movement is an 8 day time only with rectangular plates and lever platform escapement, much like one would find in a carriage clock. The back plate is marked"Empire" and"Made in England" The case is tarnished and dirty overall, and is attractive as it is, but could be polished. I personally prefer the aged look. Hand crafted of solid walnut about 1840, this clean lined desk is very pleasing. The finish is waxed and buffed. So an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is all that is needed to maintain its warm patina. There are small mars at the edges for character, the flip open desk writing area has ink stains. Bookcase doors have old wavy glass and original brass and porcelain latches. Square cut nails are visible on this American made antique furniture. Said to be from Pennsylvania. This beautiful antique desk features its old original wavy glass and we believe the brass Lion head pulls to also be original. Lovely bell flowers accent the framed panes of the glass with a working key to the lock on the doors and three adjustable shelves inside for displaying books or collectibles. The pull out desk portion offers a fine fitted interior with vintage replacement green felt on the writing surface and below additional storage is offered in the storage area below which the other key works the lock for these doors. Circa 1830s/1840s Mahogany Secretary Abbatant- Excellent Condition. This particular Secretary Abbatant belonged to Governor William J. Northen and was used in the executive mansion while he served as Governor of Georgia from 1890- 1894. Comes with a skeleton key and working lock. A 1950 will and codicil from Northen's grandson. George Northen, accompanies the desk to serve as proof of its former owner. The codicil in George's handwriting specifically states"I bequeth my Grandfather's mahogany desk pull down front, used in the executive's residence[Governor's mansion] during his administration until his death. Also included in this auction is a 1938 copy of George's tax return and a 1937 list of personal property of Ruth Northen(George's older sister) which lists the desk. Also. This is an antique Empire style desk with lion paw feet. And crystal drawer knobs that has been in my family for a long time. It has two drawers. The desk is mostly solid wood, but some parts are veneered. It appears to be mahogany, but could be some other dark tropical hardwood with a very straight grain. A modern reproduction of this desk is currently being made with plain round wooden knobs, and is priced higher than the starting price for this original piece.
