This listing is for a mahogany slant front desk. Chippendale style, ca. 1940, as pictured. It measures 41" high x 33" across x 19" deep, and is in Good condition. It does have several light scratches on the top and sides, most of which can be addressed by a quality polishing compound or scratch cover. There are 4 serpentine drawers. Original drawer pulls, ball and claw feet. Missing the key as well as 1 small knob on the inside compartment. A paper label on the back indicates the piece was made by the Northwestern Cabinet Co. of Burlington, Iowa. This company was in business between 1866-1971. This item is available for local pick-up in the Greenville. SC area. Vintage Solid Wood Chippendale Governor Winthrop Slant Top Desk Secretary
T his beautiful vintage desk is one of the best Colonial models of a Governor Winthrop style slant top desk. Was purchased in the 1970's from Terryville Furniture in Connecticut and is still in excellent condition. The Terryville Furniture Store was in business for 70 years and closed its doors in 1994) It does not have the secret compartment next to the little door inside, but it has an absolutely beautiful solid cherry wood rubbed finish. The raised cabinet with four large dove tail drawers sits on carved ball and claw feet, and in the slant top are small drawers, and a detailed small door. This Portsmouth New Hampshire Circa 1780 desk has all molded graduated drawers, first period brasses and escutcheons with all its original locks. It has great size and proportions with a nicely fitted full interior of drawers, cubbies and hidden drawers. It has a four board native pine panel back with rosehead nail joining along with all original old growth pine drawers panels ... morewith excellent evidence of rough hewing and tools marks. Antique Georgian Writing Box Lap Desk Chippendale Style Stand Brass Inlayed
This antique writing desk I believe it is from the very early 1800’s. There are some unique things that I think make the desk. I have the invoice From B. Manheim( The Antique Treasure House of The South) New Orleans. La. Sold to Mrs. Robert K. Drew Milwaukee Journal Co. 7/13/ 1964. Georgian Lap Desk 125.00 Chippendale style legs 50.00. Also there are small notes to show the buyer how to open things. So the buyer bought this 50 years ago. This I think is mahogany and inlayed brass with lock( I do not have the key) There are hidden drawers that many of these had but this one has a built in tee handle key to actually bolt it to a table with built in screws. I tried to picture these) I am not sure if the ink well is original but it had come with it 50 years ago. The owner Mr. Drew was the Vice President of the Milwaukee Journal Co. and my employer ... morelong ago. The desk itself did have a crack in the inner tray and I showed how it was repaired over 50 years ago. Also there are two cracks at the corners on the top. These were also there for over 50 years. The outside has tempered to a light golden color and the top has some stains. I have never tried to recondition it as to me it enhances the antique look of the piece. It measures 16” wide by 12” front to back and is about 6 ½” deep. The Chippendale style legs are floor to bottom of desk 14 ½” So together it stands about 20” tall. In excellent condition; all drawers open and close with ease. Original ball and claw feet. The pulls are very old replacements. It measures 43 1/2" high by 44" wide and 22" deep. Massachusetts c. 1770 Provenance from the Israel Sack Collection w/ original label signed by Israel Sack in top drawer Held in a single collection since 1931(provenance details available upon request) Item# 409LXI13S A remarkable work of art from the Newburyport area of Massachusetts. This fine American Chippendale desk is clearly executed by a craftsman of some skill. The case is joined in a manner typical of the work center, the top with tidy exposed dovetails along both sides, the bottom board likewise dovetailed into the sides of the case. The drawer blades are set into the sides of the case behind a thin applied stile on either side, these carved with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding around the drawers. The backboards are bevelled around ... moreall three edges to set flush against the back, affixed at regular intervals with mostly original iron sprigs. Each drawer is crafted with utmost precision and care, the complex blocked drawer sawn from a very thick board in a manner that leaves the drawer light and agile while the beautiful mahogany plank maintains strength and stability. These slide smoothly in and out of the case with little friction or wiggle. Circa Fourth Quarter of the 19th Century Item# 1408AWV10S This is a wonderful find. Crafted entirely with period techniques, tools and fasteners during the Centennial era of the late 19th Century. It is one of the truest representations of the Boston Kneehole Desk we've seen from this era, the craftsmanship positively impeccable. The dense mahogany planks for the top and sides of the case present a marvelous display of swirling grains and symmetry. Likewise, the boards used for the drawers have a fine swirling that augments the bow of each drawer to create a sense of greater bend and depth than actually present in the wood. The top is crafted of two planks of mahogany thumb molded of the solid, conforming to the ... morecase and projecting softly over all three sides- it affixes to the case by sliding onto dovetails along the sides, allowing the top to expand and contract over time without threat of splitting. The front of the desk features a broad single drawer over three graduated drawers on either side, flanking a single hidden drawer over the tombstone kneehole door. All drawers are crafted with great skill, the dovetails precise and perfect at each joint, the bottoms set perpendicular to the frame and affixed with tacks around all edges beneath applied runners on the sides. They retain their original hardware and working locks. The drawer bottoms, like much of the desk, are sawn by hand and lightly planed by hand- the kerf marks of the uneven saw are evident throughout these secondary surfaces. The feet are untouched and entirely original, the blocking still intact and in place other than a single missing corner block. Except for 2 small knobs on the middle pencil drawer.I buffed the hardware.it looks awesome against the rich crotch mahogany drawer ... morefronts.I have not seal coated the brass hardware, so it will slowly begin to age& tarnish/darken some Of course the carved Chippendale bracket feet all around are fantastic I left the top with some missing veneer(left& right rear corner area) and a scratch in the top.it gives character and goes with the overall custom distressed look I envisioned notice the original round brass makers tag which is inside a drawer the custom distressed black highlights the rich chestnut tones in the mahogany. I sealed the black with a varnish glaze, it adds depth and beauty, you will not find this customized finish any where else.it is my own special technique*I guarantee you will never find another desk exactly like this on the planet. It is a one of a kind work of art* lots of nicks. Dings, chips and character marks I purposefully left in the wood.there are some restoration inlays I did on the drawer fronts, also some worn edges of veneer I left alone on the drawer fronts.that is part of the custom distressed finish not new. EXCEPTIONAL AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SLANT FRONT DESK OVER CLAW FEET Salem or Boston Massachusetts. C. 1770-90 Item# 211CKJ26F This very fine American Chippendale desk almost certainly originates from the Salem or Boston work centers in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the 18th Century. The dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany was clearly selected with great care. The smooth and undulating lines of the boards understated and subtle, flowing from one drawer to the next and ultimately into the slanting desk surface. The desk top is constructed with a solid horizontal plank flanked by groove-and-tongue vertical strips, lifting smoothly over period replaced brass hinges and resting on the projecting lopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby ... moreholes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer features a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it, a design common to these work centers, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards laid horizontally and half-lapped, behind which a pine support runs perpendicular to the boards, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. Each below larger proportionally to the one above, sliding in and out of the beaded frame. For your Bidding consideration in this Auction is an Antique Walnut(the estate I acquired this from said it was walnut. Another person said it may be mahogany so please view photos) Slant Front Desk. In researching the desk, a very similar desk recently sold on Ebay and was stated to have been made circa 1770 in Philadelphia which is where I am getting my estimated date and place of manufacture from as in all of my research it most closely resembles that one. Please view photos to determine for yourself an estimate of age and manufacturer dating. The desk has 2"Secret" compartments, one is hidden as a false bottom in one of the drawers, the other hidden in the cabinet beneath one of the drawers/ May be others I haven't found. Note the large 4 bottom drawers are graduated in size and pencil numbered. Following are the dimensions: ... moreHeight: 44 inches Width: 39 3/4 inches Depth: 20 1/2 inches Weight: estimate 100-125 pounds. I do not have a good way to weigh it so this is just an estimate The condition for age overall is good. A few things to note is there are as follows: one of the brass key hold covers is missing. May have had a hinged door inside the cabinet at top, there is a very old"mouse hole" finger notch in the top drop front section giving easy access to open the desk, one of the decorative drawers inside the top section of the cabinet is missing the front and sides. I do not have a key for it. May also show a few other scratches and age related dings but overall a very solid, beautiful desk. I am offering this as pick up only as I have never packed a piece of furniture like this and would be nervous about not packing it correctly for shipping. A beautiful highly detailed cherry Chippendale style serpentine secretary by Jasper Furniture. This piece comes in two pieces. The display top and the secretary desk bottom which makes for easier delivery. The top display case has two convex glass doors with cubed fretwork which are bracketed on either side by fluted columns. They open to the display area with two adjustable glass shelves. Two lights at top illuminate the interior. The crown is a split pediment with a central wreath form finial. The bottom portion has a drop front secretary desk which opens to an organizer section with four drawers and multiple cubbies on each side and a central door with inlaid urn. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Chester County. Signed illegibly four times and dated 1807 Item# 411IQL13P This fine example of Eastern Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Almost certainly originating in Chester County, has a distinct air of ingenuity about it. A departure from the typical corinthian fluted corner columns seen on these cases, the desk employs a quartered column with three graduated divisions of double-ringing in completion of the drawer blades they flank. This effective treatment softens the facade and introduces a certain magnetic rural character to the form. The interior is exceptional. The deep writing surface edged by a scalloped molding conforming with the serpentine of the ten blocked front drawers beneath ten pigeon holes. Instead of employing a prospect door, the center of the interior ... moreis a complicated little box that is easily drawn from the center- over the pigeon holes in this box, the valance actually is a tiny hidden drawer. By removing the entire dovetailed box from the interior, a previously hidden document drawer becomes visible. On the front it is signed illegibly"J. Sh.f.p Rat. 1807" the same signature seen also on the two hidden document drawers that flank this drawer and the two hidden document drawers that flank these as well- to bring out the deepest document drawers, a long string is attached and can be tugged to bring these unseen pieces forward. The front of the desk is composed of a pair of lopers. The fronts of which are set on tiny dovetails and sunk into the blades, and four graduated drawers retaining their original locks and untouched structure with replaced brasses. The top and bottom of the case are openly dovetailed, the back of the case with untouched half-lapped planks retaining their original rosehead and cut nails and a nearly black level of oxidization throughout. There is the two door and two drawer top section over four drawers in the base section. The two doors are paneled. All of the hardware is original as are the lock sets. There is one original key. A beautiful diminutive American solid cherry two piece secretary bookcase bureau with a cabinet section.possibly a country linen press?is up for auction fresh from a Charleston estate sale. There is the two door and two drawer top section over four drawers in the base section. The two doors are paneled. All of the hardware is original as are the lock sets. There is one original key. The drawers will also lock. I did not add a photo of the hand planed back boards but have such if anyone is interested. The top of the base opens up to reveal a nice work section. All of the drawers are hand dovetailed. And all surfaces were hand planed. The four shaped bracket feet are a combination of extensions of the sides and applied feet in the front. This is an exceptional American ... morepiece which is probably out of New England just after the turn of the 18th century. It is from the Andrew Crispo estate and was purchased from Eve Stone and Son Antiques which at the time was a well known dealer in an antiques gallery in New York City around 1989 and has been in storage more most of that time. Measurements are as follows: Height to top = 60 1/4" Height to top of surface = 31 1/8" Width of the base = 35 3/4" Width of top = 32 1/2" Depth at base with"desktop" open = 23" Depth at base with desktop closed = 17 1/4" Depth of just the top = 12" These old handmade cabinets are harder and harder to find in original condition! EXCEEDINGLY FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE OXBOW DESK OVER BALL AND CLAW FEET Boston. Massachusetts c. 1760-80 Retaining original brasses. Feet and chalk inscription to underside Item# 411MKP15V A remarkable work of art. This fine American Chippendale slant front desk features the very desirable"oxbow" or"serpentine" facade cherished in the best pieces. Hewn from incredibly thick mahogany logs, these drawers are sawn into shape with a continuous plank to achieve the fluid movement found in the case. The top drawer is particularly difficult to execute, as this retains much more of the mahogany and not only serpentines with the case but also is faceted along the top edge. Retaining it's brilliant polished brass batwing hardware, the desk remains in an outstanding state of preservation. The drawer structures are untouched. ... moreEven the applied runners remaining original to the case. These are crafted in the typical manner for the Northern Shore of Massachusetts- the pine frame is dovetailed along the front and back, the bottom deeply chamfered and set into rabbets in the sides of the drawer over which a thin pine runner is applied to create the groove. They slide easily in and out of the case over a few original and several replaced interior case runners, these nailed to the case from the inside. The drawers are divided by drawer blades with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding, affixed into the sides of the case on either end with open dovetails; as economical craftsmen, only a few inches of mahogany line the front of the drawer blade, which is backed by several inches of pine. The interior is somewhat typical of the region. Having a stepped interior with a central half-shell carved drawer over a conforming blocked front drawer flanked by document drawers and three pigeon-hole letter compartments. The outer pigeon-hole valances are actually hidden drawers, each crafted with uncompromising workmanship of tiny dovetails to match the other drawers.
