This is a superb large mahogany writing desk bureau made in England circa 1850. The condition is very good. The desk is far better than the pictures suggest. Antique Military Writing Desk (English)
Greetings. Very interesting item I have today. It appears to be a Military portable writing desk. Made by Jones& Co– manufacturers of military equipments– Regent Street London SW. The initials W.C. are embossed on the top. Box measures 10.5 inches front to back. 6 inches tall and is 16 inches wide with brass handle. Box does have a lock(I DO NOT HAVE KEY) Covered in leather. Exterior leather is scratched and discolored on one side with a few places where the leather is separating from the box. Interior is black and is in good shape. I have no idea of the age! This was an item made for an officer I am sure. Please review pictures before asking questions. I think it is old. But I can’t back it up. I would estimate the box weighs approx. 5-10 pounds. This French Louis XVI Style Ladies Writing Desk features a Cylinder Roll top that functions in conjunction with the opening of the single drawer. This effectively allows you to lock the desk and all contents with a single lock, because with the drawer being locked there is no access to the roll top; with the roll top being closed, the slant front is unable to open and the compartment beneath is sealed. The desk does not come with it's key, though these keys are often not difficult to come by. Retaining a warm cognac-mahogany tone throughout, a patina slowly developing under many layers of wax, the piece is delightful to look upon. The slant front drops to reveal a pink-red tone leather ... morewriting surface with gilt highlights, this likely a replacement. The back of this lifts to reveal a storage compartment. Three small hand dovetailed drawers with brass molding rest beneath a pair of inkwells flanking the concave pen channel. The embellishments are typical to the Louis XVI form, the rectangular reeded panels flanking the cylinder top and decorating each corner closely keeping with the angularity of the piece. The desk rests over turned, tapered and fluted legs that terminate in brass capped feet. A handsome piece in every regard. An antique American display cabinet with. With original brass fixtures and correspondence compartment. Up for auction is an antique Art Nouveau cabinet. This outstanding piece of furniture dates from the 1880s. It would have originally had a curved glass piece but this is no longer with this cabinet. This cabinet has a foldout writing/correspondence desk to make this cabinet an attractive late 19th century example of dual functionality. The secretarial part of this desk is wonderfully organized. It has many compartments to organize paper. And a small middle drawer for various needs. There is a nice size drawer under the desk and then an opening door that might suit to hold larger books. There is still much beauty in this old piece. The carving on the top and on the door fronts are great representations from this era. The door pulls are original ... morewith the exception of the pull on the front of the desk pull. It has all original four shelves along with original pegs that support each shelf. The flaws that this piece has inherited are a crack along the desk top. Two of the feet are cracked and the wood in spots needs some love and refinishing. This piece has had two owners. Up for sale I have a very nice Antique Mahogany Kneehole/ Writers Desk in very good condition! It has a few dings and scratches but very minor(see pictures) all drawers have dovetails and the hardware is very nice. This desk has 8 drawers.one drawer sticks. It's probably from age but could very easily be fixed. Top has some very detailed inlay(see pictures) not sure on the maker looks like there was a makers mark at some point inside the right drawer but it has been removed. This Meiji Period(1868- 1912) writing desk and chair is exquisitely hand carved of wood. It is a fine example of Japanese craftsmanship from the late 19th Century. The set was purchased several years ago and has been been a center piece preserved in our office. It does show use and ware. I have no idea of what I have really have. Antique wooden miniature chest/ writing desk. Made well over 100 years ago. But exact date not known. 11.5 inches long; 8 inches tall; 5.5 inches front to back. May have been a salesman's sample and may have been a child's toy. Would make a wonderful jewellery box today. Beautifully constructed a long time ago. Long. Deep drawfront divided into two compartments, at the bottom, right accross the front. Above it is a much narrower/shallower drawer with no division. A desk/ writing surface above that and recessed behind is a set of 6 smaller draws, all but one divided into two sections. The draw pulls are made of natural material, we are not sure exactly what, and some have a little bite missing here and there(as shown in'photos) The draws are beautifully constructed with fine dovetails. Due to age. The wood has separated and someone, ... moreapparrently a long time ago, has filled in some of the gaps- see'photos. There is one little chunk of missing wood- seems to have fallen away due to age, not damage. The rest is in good shape, with plenty of signs of age and use- certainly not pristine. Incredible find.beautiful old Plantation Desk top. In lovely condition. Not abused, from a non-smoking home. Usually the only the bottom part of the plantation desks survive. But this complete top is in lovely, age-appropriate condition. I believe the wood is walnut with pine as a secondary wood. There is a top section that lifts that goes the entire away across with the molding. Revealing pigeon holes/cubbies. On either side of the piece are large doors.the left side has a grid of cubbies. The right side has horizontal dividers, with pretty ogee divider detail for vertical file storage. Four drawers with horizontal beaded details.they no longer have their pulls but move freely. An age-appropriate pull would be wood. So it should be easy to replace. Beautiful old paw foot desk with elaborate articulate feet. The best feet I've seen.the carving is amazing from all angles.toes. Tufts, fur, nails. The desk is in lovely condition. Cherished and not abused, from a non-smoking home. My parents bought it in Charlottesville, VA in the early 1970s. Beautiful striped veneer vertically across the slanted top. In exceptional condition for the age. Some small losses and light cracks in veneer, very small, I'm happy to send photos. Slant top desk that has tight brass hinges and longer elaborate hinge guides on each size of the slant plank Lovely inside. With drawers, and scalloped/scrolled cubbies. Four horizontal drawers. Measures approximately 53-1/4" ... morewide. 29"tall at bottom of slant/40" tall, and 19" deep at fold of slanted area, top is 8-1/2" I was just researching the dovetail joints on the 4 large drawers to see if I could better date this desk. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk.
