Antique 1937 Signed Art Deco Palm Writing Desk w/Smoking Stand/Vaseline Ashtrays
This is a fantastic antique original art deco writing desk with matching smoking stand and original green Anchor Hocking Vaseline glass ashtrays. They are unusual and one-of-a-kind matching pieces that appear to be possibly made from Palm. Redwood, and Pine. I have found two highly visible signatures in pencil, one on the bottom of one desk drawer, the other is visible on the bottom of the desk when the drawers are removed. They say"Made by Arthur Johnson, June 25 1937, Inglewood California, native California palms, native Redwood, Washingtonia. Original-in-design, cannot be sold or copied. Design registered E.E. Johnson. Pine 60 cents. The smoking stand has a gold decal on top that says Inglewood Calif in cursive. Both pieces seem to have their original heavily lacquered finish intact and in good condition with some typical scuffs and ... morescratches mainly around the outside edges and legs(on the palm tree parts) where the lacquer isn't so thick. The desk has two built-in letter or stationary holders on top and two drawers underneath. Besides the ashtrays, the smoking stand has a matchbox holder on top. All pieces are held together by wood screws that all look old and probably original. There are a few screws on the desk that don't tighten all the way and might need to be replaced. One of the bolts on the bottom of a desk leg is missing a nut. There are screw holes where there was probably another piece of wood attached to the cross bars on the legs that went across the middle lengthwise, but it is no longer intact. The desk will be disassembled and labeled prior to shipping for easy reassembly by the buyer. Some of the joints on the desk legs currently feel a little loose and could use a little wood glue during reassembly. The measurements of the desk are 37" L x 17" W x 30 1/2" H with palm branches that stick up about 23" from the desk top. The smoking stand measures 16" x 16" along the base x 27" H. Antique Lap Writing Desk Folding Oak Wood Bone Box Travel Portable Brass Hinges
For sale is this exquisite antique lap writing desk. It does have some condition issues. Which is why my opening bid is low for this type of quality. Someone re-lined the interior with green felt. Both interior wood surfaces are off their hinges, and it appears to be missing two slats by the ink well holders. However, this was really an upscale item for its time. Both wood surfaces inside the box have breadboard edges. I believe the material for the lock and top accent pieces is bone. They have been inlaid and pinned. The pinned brass corners were beautifully constructed. Has a little copper stop inside to hold the table down. Made of oak, it measures approx. 4 1/2" h x 12 3/4" w x 7 3/4" d. This is a very nice mahogany with satinwood inlay American writing desk. to the top behind the door there are drawers with pigeon holes. To the base there are there drawers to either side they are there compartments for keeping bottle of drinks. It has the pull down flap for writing with a green baize. It sits on square tapered legs with some inlay. The top comes of the base so its easy to transport. A very nice American piece of antique. Measurements are 41 wide 48 high 21 deep. Antique Queen Anne style flip top cabriole leg writing desk
Beautiful example of an early 1900's desk. Desk has early Soss concealed hinges also knows as piano hinges which were extremely difficult to install and were used on very well made pieces of furniture. This desk has cabriole legs and 2 small interior drawers. 2 sliding top drawer storage compartments and 1 exterior desk front drawer. Desk is in very nice condition. It does have a few nicks and a small area on the top of the folding flip top section that has some missing veneer and a deep nick on the back side of the desk. The small area of missing veneer is completely hidden from view when the flip top is opened. I have shown these areas in the pictures. The desk is extremely well made and of solid construction. Selling an antique Secretary Desk with Hutch as pictured built c. 1849 in Update NY according to the note that came with it. Measures 43 1/2w x 49h x 23d. The unit is all one piece and is in good condition. Condition issues such as round spots are shown in pictures. Hinges on the hutch doors were missing and have been replaced with modern ones. Unit is all one piece and cannot be disassembled. Piece must be picked up on or before November 11.

FANTASTIC ESTATE FIND! This gorgeous French writing desk was sitting in a backroom with painting supplies on it.unbelievable! Although this piece is not perfect. The flaws in the top only add character and experience to the rich feel of this solid mahogany, handcrafted beauty. The wonderful handcarved cabriole legs with such an ornate fineal structure under the desktop are outstanding and capped with very ornate bronze eagle talons gripping it's ball feet present this piece of history with style, grace and strength. No one at the sale knew much about this table/desk. Except that it had been in the family for generations. The joinery help in dating this piece to prior to the industrial age with it's hand carved ducktails in the drawer and the ornate eagle talon/claw and ball feet tend to point towards an upper east coast, i.e. New ... moreYork, Rhode Island, Maryland, origin probably sometime between 1800 and 1850. The only maker's or craftsman mark are the numbers 1111 carved into the bottom of the desk and 1114 carved into the bottom of the drawer. A previous owner may have attempted or started a refinish job on this piece, but did not do much other than some spot touchup. It is pretty amazing the way it sits, but with a little know-how and the right products on the desk surface(the legs and fineal are darn near perfect) this piece would be simply stunning. I have set a lower starting price in order to compensate for finishing some flaws(but don't remove the character of age, please) and to help with shipping costs. 41"w x 26"d x29"h 1 drawer. The table measures about 26 inches wide, 42 inches long, and stands about 30 inches tall. There is a drawer on one side and a shelf across the bottom. There is a burn mark along the edge as shown in the 5th photo, but otherwise the table is in good condition for its age. Very ornate and beautiful writers desk made by George Maddox company in London. The desk comes with a chair but it is not original to the desk. The chair is very attractive and appears to match in style and temperament. No missing pieces. Normal wear. Has 2 covered ink wells.
