The interior drawers above the writing surface are all functional. When the writing surface is extended, a row of faux drawers is revealed. The drawers on either side of the knee hole are locked until the writing surface is extended slightly and then the mechanism unlocks. Overall this desk is in great condition. There are a few damaged spots in the burled walnut veneer (see pictures), and a couple of splits in some of the side panels (see pictures). All of these blemishes are caused by use and age, and do not affect the function.

A very fine and unusual antique. Circa 1880, Renaissance Revival Davenport lift top desk. The solid walnut case has burl walnut veneers in recessed and raised panels. There are four drawers on the left side with brass ring handles. There are matching faux drawer fronts on the right side that are decoration only. The top brown leather writing surface on lid opens to a pine and maple compartment, the cubbyhole with two burl fronted drawers. The bottom front doors have burl veneer panels. The right door opens to a compartment with stationary maple shelves. The door reverse has a birdeye maple veneer panel. The left door is faux and does not open. There is a nice top spindled walnut gallery, and carved walnut front scroll feet and drop finials. The desk measures 40" tall by 31" wide by 26" deep, the leather writing surface 26-3/4" ... morewide by 14-1/4" deep. From bottom of desk overhang to floor is 25-1/2" tall. It measures 31 1/4" tall by 43" wide by 28" deep- it has five drawers with what appears to be its original turned wood handles- it has hand dovetailed drawers and is square nailed- the finish is either original or an old refinish- the leather top I believe is an old replacement- this is a chunky solid very well made piece of furniture- it has some minor use wear on the finish. All we did was polish it up, and some minor wear shows here and there in the finish, but it adds charm and character. We did replace the felt on the desk because it was in rough condition. This is called a butler’s desk because back in the old days, the butler was an important person in the household. He took care of the house, paid bills, and did all the food shopping. He would get the groceries, and he would make the list on this desk. It was also used as a dish cupboard in the dining room. This one has lots of burl on it, lots of rosettes, burl trim all over, and racetrack moldings on the doors, which retain their original brass hardware. The beautiful solid black walnut case has a carved crest on top, which is normally missing on these pieces. There is truly burl all over this piece: on the top, the face of the bookcase/china closet, rosettes and buttons. The handles and burl walnut on the drop down lid are unbelievable. There are 5 carved open compartments for organizing and a hidden drawer that opens the full length of the desk with 4 divided sections inside. The top center includes a compartment that incases the original clock. On the lid is a hand carved cupid. Underneath the desk is a paper disposal original period brown velvet sack with a hanging cord attached to a lovely ivory pearl stone set within a bronze circular ring with designs. There are two tips missing from the delicate finials located on left side underneath the desk and on the right side bottom between the legs. Westclox Tiny Tim Vintage Antique Walnut Bakelite Desk Clock 1920s - 1930s
My father was a craftsman and self-taught clockmaker and repairer. From the mid-60s to the mid-90s he acquired. Rebuilt, then sold nearly 1,000 antique clocks. When he passed away in 2003 he had almost 300 left. I inherited a share of them. We have decided to downsize our home and so some of the clocks have to go. Westclox patented its Tiny Tim line of desk clocks on March 29. 1927. The walnut Bakelite version was manufactured from 1928 until production on this line ended in 1933. I wound this cute little clock earlier today and it is still ticking but I do not guarantee how long it will. Its metal face is almost pristine and has intricate Art Nouveau vining in gold. The face of the clock reads, Westclox Tiny Tim. At the bottom of the dial, tiny print reads, Made in USA. The bottom has patent information. See photos. Antique Traveler's Folding Walnut Writing Desk/ Box/ Secretary* All Original This is a late 19th century portable. Or traveling, writing desk. It is 13 3/4" wide, 8 3/4" deep when closed, and 4" high closed. It is made of nicely figured walnut with brass reinforcements. Everything is completely original. The exterior finish has very fine crazing which is not obvious- you must view it at an acute angle in the light- and VERY few of the minor marks these things usually pick up over a century. There is no real damage or dings. I do not have the key. The hinges are completely solid. The interior wood finish is in nearly the same condition but has about a half dozen wear spots. The velvet pad is original. It is split across the boxe's hinge but I believe it may have been made that way- there in no fraying- and the tab to ... morelift the bottom section is missing. The only real problem is that the velvet, which acts as the hinge for the two compartment lids, is loose from the frame of the box's lid as seen in the fourth pic; this is easily repaired. The compartments are clean and include the original dust. There are two ink bottles- one with its original pewter collar and lid and the other is missing the pewter pieces. The lid for the pen/pencil compartment has ink spilled on it(seen in the pics) but this should clean off if you know how to do that. Gorgeous solid black walnut slant top writing desk. Circa 1820-1860 I rescued this diamond in the rough. It had many many coats of white paint hiding this beautiful black walnut wood. I lovingly& meticulously hand restored this desk back to full glory. I restored the finish with many. Many coats of hand rubbed shellac, maintaining the antique warm glow, rubbed to a silky smooth, yet allowing the beautiful grain textures to be felt. There was a trim around the back of the top which was missing. I custom made this new back rail trim using reclaimed 250 year old black walnut. The period solid walnut hand carved drawer pulls are from a Victorian dresser The harp shaped end is gorgeous and rare. As you can easily see with its cone shaped finial on the end of the hand turned support which joins it to the drawer base. The slant top is fixed ... morein position. There is no lid that lifts up, this was designed as a writing desk, dating back to the quill pen days. There is an age shrinkage split in the top which I chose not to restore. It gives great character to this lovely piece. The drawer lock mechanisms are missing.I restored all the drawers. Carefully taking them all apart and regluing them all and now they are rock solid and slide excellently. Full depth drawers with lots of storage. The desk is finished on all sides.It is a showpiece from all angles. I purposefully left some character marks remain in this desk such as tiny chip of wood.left top edge) pinholes etc, they give this desk awesome character, I was not trying to create a reproduction piece I try and respect the antique with all of its age, history and character. And has a tooled leather top with ethereal gold leaf detailing. This desk features a warm reddish-brown finish, six open letter cubbies and one cubby with a door. There are three smaller drawers with dovetail joinery, oval brass pulls, and four square tapered fluted legs with caster feet. Recessed front tambour doors roll in from the sides to hide the letter cubbies and cabinet. I know the history of this library and of this desk because 4 generations of my family went to this school. This library was part of a private church school where you could start out in diapers in the nursery school building and continue through all of elementary, junior high,high school and 4 years of college in one school. The library was shared by all. It got the name Druillard from a lady whose name was Charlotte Druillard, who gave the money to the school for the library to built close to the turn of the last century-1900. She was the wife of the man who founded the famous Belmont College and University in Nashville. My father(who was very sentimental) purchased this table from the library. He immediately loaned it to the school alumni association to place in their entry way. It remained there until Oct.1985, when after my father's death, my mother asked for it back. She gave it to me for my home. I have used it as a desk in my home since 1985. It has been well taken care of and is in excellent condition. A quality made piece with two drawers across the front. Not a lot of wood carvings, but a beautiful design though a more simple elegant piece to look at that is also very practical. Large in scale and has a variety of potential uses. The measurements are: 54 1/2"long x 32" wide x 28" high. It is finished on all sides so it can be placed in the center of a room.There are two dovetailed drawers that go across the front of the table, that slide in and out easily. Made from a lovely dark walnut wood and covered with a red leather writing surface. This desk is quite the find! Two easily opening drawers provide some storage in this desk. They are constructed with hand cut dovetails which are a sign of authenticity and quality. Each drawer ... morefeatures a unique brass handle. Locks are present but there is no key. Four turned legs are connected via a lovely turned stretcher which adds beauty and stability to this antique writing desk. Four brass casters at the bottom provide the ability to roll the desk short distances. One of the more unusual and attractive feature of the desk are the quarter round accents on the sides of the desk. Just under the top. Fluted lines can be found on these accents, the drawers, and all over the legs and stretcher. This fluted line style was one of may used in the Victorian period. This desk was originally made in England around 1890 and is rated in good condition. It is sturdy and stable. There are numerous dings and dents throughout the top and drawer fronts of varying sizes. This spectacular complete office opens to reveal an interior with birdseye or curly maple including cubbyholes or mailboxes in the doors and twelve small drawers below. The drop front leather writing surface has an adjustable angle. Inside are drawers and compartments of various sizes. Above is a lift lid covering more slots for documents. Solid walnut with raised burl panels and deep moldings, the finish is in very fine condition with small irregularities typical of intricate burl. It has been polished and waxed so only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain the warm antique patina. Embossed bronze hardware is original and complete. Antique Primitive AMERICAN Re purposed WALNUT WOOD PEGGED WRITING Desk
This is a very early re purposed desk. It is made of walnut. The top of the desk was originally a very old cabinet door as it has hinge markings on the underside. It is well made with wooden pegs. I bought it from a family who told me that their great grandfather was always re purposing furniture in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This desk is from that period. Beautiful old lap desk in burl walnut veneer. With original writing pads. Brass plate with brass corner straps, lock, and hinges. Only 11 3/4 wide, 8 3/4 inches deep, and only 5 inches high. Condition: The rear lap pad is detached. The lock mechanism is gone. The veneer. Though in excellent condition, is broken in the back, below the corner strap on the right side, see the picture.
