The burnt in lettering is crisp and clear and there is no damage to the box whatsoever. It has original dovetailing design and the structure and integrity of the box is fully intact and very strong. 3 in One oil was first manufactured in 1894 for use on bicycles and only a few years into its existence they quickly found that it worked perfectly on guns and sewing machines and all things with moving parts. Rare Vintage BON AMI Wood Dovetailed Shipping Crate ~ 3 Chicks ~ Pine This is a super vintage hard to find wooden advertising crate for BON AMI. We are'best guessing' that was made in the 1920s or 1930s. Size is about 15-1/2" wide x 11-1/8" deep x 6" high. It was constructed using finger joints which became popular in the late 19th century especially for making wooden crates. This also has integrated handles which made it easy to carry and store- they are carved or cut into the wood sides(not extended or all the way through) The two long sides of this crate read: BON AMI"Hasn't Scratched Yet" and the artwork showing 3 chicks below the advertising. The 4 sides are pine and the bottom is the old(and possibly original) hardboard material which was becoming popular back then. This is in very good condition ... moreas shown. There is one small wood chip on one side under a chick on the left side. Box is very strong and well made. I have had this box for many years. It has never been varnished. Painted(like some) or treated in any way. This is dry, clean, and has no odors from a non-smoking home. A little history of the company from research: One of the first Bon Ami chicks(in 1903) was painted by Ben Austrian(1870-1921) A fine art painter with studios in Paris, London, Palm Springs and beautiful Berks County Pennsylvania. Overall good condition. Has signs of wear/use inside& out, small imperfections in the soft wood surface including very small dents/chips along edges& corners. A lot of it is due to the factory construction method(rough-cut& knotted wood. Only medium sanded, unfinished bare wood) A couple of the wood slats have small cracks(shown ... morein photos) which again is common and something many sellers don't highlight or mention or show in their poorly taken photos. They could easily be glued and/or filled. Please look at our photos and you'll see it's still in decent shape. There is a black factory stamp inside on one end and a Craftline factory ID label on the outside of the other end. The inside along the bottom slats is a little gray in color(has gray appearance. Probably from black jewel cases) If you're not familiar with wine crates& similar type wood media crates. The wood often has many small flaws& imperfections and is extremely common. Though some is due to use& wear, many surface irregularities are typical with all of these crates since new and most can be easily woodglued or filled or sanded away because the boxes are made from very soft coniferous wood. This box has some miscellaneous wear but is still in good condition and may just need a little TLC. These can be treated with lemon-oil or butcher's wax to give the wood a richer color. Or with wood stain to bring out the wood-grain, or just clear-coated for a natural gloss or satin finish, or even painted your fav
