The certificate will be signed and numbered and guarantees you that you received an original Bergmann figurine. About the production of these miniatures- the"Lost Wax Method" The actual material of the object is Brass. Vintage Vienna Bronze elephant realistic beautifully detailed nice warm patina!
This is a Vienna bronze standing elephant. I don't know how old it is. But I believe it is old; more about that later in the description. This elephant came from a local yard sale, and was with a Vienna bronze cat. It is unpainted and very well sculpted, with great realistic detail and a nice warm patina. It had two tusks which are not bronze but probably bone or some similar material. These were glued into sockets in the bronze, but one is missing. The remaining tusk is a little loose. Otherwise it is in very good condition, with no breaks, nothing bent out of shape, and no repairs that I can find. It is just about 1 1/2 inches tall to the top of the head(the trunk rises a little higher) by just under 3 inches long including the outstretched trunk. I could not find any maker's marks on this piece. Vienna bronzes are small bronzes ... morewhich were first made in Austria in the 1850's. They are real bronzes(not some other type of bronzed metal or"cold cast" bronze, which is a modern process using resin and bronze powder) made using the sand casting method and often painted with oil paints(called"cold-painted" to distinguish it from patinated, which is where you apply chemicals to the bronze which react with it when heat is applied to color the bronze) Some are still being made today using the old molds, so a Vienna bronze could be old or it could be modern. I am always wary of Vienna bronzes because of this, however from the patina and the style and the detail this one looks to me to be genuinely old. I could not find it for sale new anywhere on the internet, and most of the newer Vienna Bronzes are painted. Also, I found it with the cat which does look like an old Vienna bronze, and it was at a real yard sale, not one of those where people call it a yard sale but sell"antiques" Because of all that, I think it is an old Vienna bronze, but I can't be absolutely sure. Liquid Brass would destory the rubber and for this reason the figurine is in the first step casted out of wax. The wax figurine is used to prepare a negative made of some kind of plaster or clay: In a very special technique one or more wax figurines get placed inside a container. All that is covered with plaster or clay. The mould is dried and fired. This way the clay is getting hard while the wax is melting. A hollow space is created- the negative. This negative gets filled with liquid Brass. When the Brass is cooled down. It gets hard. The plaster around the brass core can be broken off and the figurines made of Brass are the desired result. About the production of these miniatures The material of the object is brass. Achieving such a high level of detail requires a very complex and time intensive production process: At the beginning moulds of wax were created. Including drains for air and melted brass.
