ODDITY Upside Down oval - Vintage Red Wing Union Stoneware 2 two Gallon Crock
Here is a Vintage Red Wing Minnesota Union Stoneware Co. 2 Gallon Crock. It is rare because of a factory flaw- the oval was applied upside down! I understand that this occurrence is not unheard of. But it is rare. Here is an opportunity to add a different crock to your collection. The crock is in pretty nice condition. Has some wear and a very minor chip along the bottom rim. Also a little"pit" adjacent to the oval and two scrapes through the wing that looks to me like it left the factory that way. Wing is about 4" long. Photos describe best.

There are no cracks. But there is a chunk missing off the bottom rim. This is an old stoneware/ceramic jug/crock that has been in storage for a lot of years. Could it have been used for whiskey or moonshine? It is a tannish gray at the bottom with brown at the top. No markings on it and no cork. Does have the usual blemishes that come with something this primitive and has a small chip at the bottom(could have been original) I'm not a good judge- this is probably about a one gallon size. Elaborately Decorated 3 Gal. Remmey Baltimore, MD Stoneware Crock Jar Pot
Up for your consideration is a scarce 3 gallon Remmey pot made while potting in Baltimore. MD. This piece is probably around 1840.I'm saying Baltimore because he used the same decoration on a few water coolers at the time and the collar and heavy lug handles look more Baltimore than Philadelphia, PA but it could go either way. Some experts could probably tell one from the other. The crock is decorated with large vertical floral designs front and back with cobalt brush work to the handles ends and hanging flowers below the lugs. It is 13 1/4" tall.9" on the top.6 1/2" on the bold footed base and 34" around the ovoid middle. There is a flake off the rim and a tight spider hairline coming up the the base 3 1/2" The crock is a sound as from the kiln. Wild roses on lattice light to medium blue painted on soft white glaze. SALT is done in cobalt blue. great pattern. See lid also is matched and has lattice and roses. I was asked to add more photos of lid, now added 12 photos. There are flaws in the mold and paint as shown. All angles in photos enlarge. I see nothing distracting. It is 5 3/4" high and 4.75" in diameter. The condition is very good. There is a tiny chip and hairline on the lip, could be in the making. The jug is 8” tall, with a base diameter of 5 ½” and an upper half diameter of 6” I’m sorry that I cannot tell you the volume it holds, but my guess is about ½ to ¾ gallon. It is embossed in reverse raised letters on the inside bottom"A.HANCOCK- MANUFACTURER- INVENTOR" There are four five-point stars also. One in each corner. It has a nice sound to it when it is tapped despite having a bunch of edge chips and a small but tight 1 1/4 inch hairline in one corner. Antique 2 Gallon Stoneware Crock, Fort Edward Stoneware Co.
A very nice 2 gallon crock from Fort Edward Stoneware Co. in Fort Edward N.Y. It's condition is pretty good. There are 2 chips on the outer rim. One is 1/2" and the other is 1/4" both are located towards the back of the crock. Right next to the larger chip is a very faint hairline crack, it is somewhat visable in the last 2 photos. Also there are some small small areas or discoloration, again visable in the photos. The Crock stand 9 1/4" tall and 9 1/2" across the base. All in all this is a very nice crock for its age. A very fine 2Gal. Storage Crock or Jar from Bennington. Vermont, ca.1860. The impressed stamp on the shoulder is Cobalt-Washed and reads: J. NORTON& CO. BENNINGTON, VT. This mark is extremely scarce. It dates to the 3-year period when Julius Norton and his son, Luman Preston(aka L.P. worked together from 1859-1861. When Julius died in 1861, the named changed to the more familiar E. L.P. NORTON. More information can be found in Ketchum's"American Stoneware" pp.43-44. The decoration. A prolific Cobalt Floral Bouquet, covers the entire front of the piece. It is very bold, impressive and will not disappoint. Two firmly applied Lug Handles, and rich, brown Albany Slip interior. I still have some new farm auction stuff to list, as well as some South Dakota/Wyoming vacation stuff to list but also recently drove with a friend out to Eastern Ohio. Stopped at two barn sales along the way- both Amish homes, and did I get some fabulous finds. Some very old primitives and antiques, and I’m thrilled to post them for you this week. Love this antique stoneware pottery open crack- dontcha think it would be fabulous holding your old wood utensil collection? I have one doing just the same thing that is similar. And I do love it. It's a nice size for that, too, measuring 5 1/2" tall and 5" diameter at the mouth, it weighs a smidge over 2 lbs. It's in excellent ... moresolid and sturdy condition- with no cracks or chips except for what I'm showing you in photo 11, whichs is at the center of the very bottom and very well may be original to the making. There's a lot of heavy crazing, darkening on the inside of the crock from use, and it could use a good cleaning. The carmel colored spots that you may see on the side in the photo 5 is palpable- like dirt or grime, there's more that are similar, and there's other dark spots that look to be from crazing. It's a rustic old crock that shows its age, but does it with primitive grace for sure. Please ask if you have any questions. It's unmarked and I believe very old; from the mid to late 1800's(purchased from a local dealer) It has a rough(concave) bisque bottom and some glaze infractions, but is without chips or hairlines. Weight is slightly over 2 pounds, and the crock measures 6-1/4" height with a base diameter of 4-9/16" by 4-1/2" and the ovoid top is 5-1/2" diameter by 4-3/4" diameter. The jug is approximately 10 inches in height and 5.75 inches in diameter and reads" Premier Pure/ Liquors/ P. R. Lancaster& Co/ Owensboro K Y. No cracks or hairlines that I can find. The overall condition is very good with a ding out the the front right and back left of the shoulder and some wear to the glaze. Vintage Stoneware Three Pound Salt Glaze Butter Crock
For your cosideration is a salt glazed butter crock of the three pound size. This crock does not have a manufacturer's mark on it. In 1894 a few of the stoneware manufacturer's started using white glaze instead of salt glaze; by 1902 salt glaze was a thing of the past. Salt glaze was made by shoveling salt into a kiln of unglazed stoneware when the temperature is well above 2000 degrees Farenhiet and the salt vapors adhere to the unglazed stoneware. Albany slip glaze was used on the inside of the container. Because with the container upside down on another container, salt vapors could not reach the inside of the container. This butter crock is slightly more than 4" tall and the bottom is approximately 5 3/4" in diameter. This butter crock has 0 cracks, however where the sides meet the bottom is a small chip; this chip is ... morebarely visible when the butter crock is placed on a level, smooth and firm surface. The Albany slip interior is flaked off in places, but most of the light colored places in the picture are from 0 or little glaze applied. Crocks were originally used for storing foods and were once the backbone of a winter food supply for our ancestors. Large ones were used for brining and curing meat after butchering. Food could be kept cold for 60 days in a crock. This small crock was for Lambrecht Butter. Famous For The Flavor. Measures 5 1/2" across the top and 3" tall. up for bid is this neat stoneware butter crock. It is 3 3/4 inches tall. 5 1/2 inches across. It has neat rounded interior and is 3 1/2 inches deep. It has a nice rounded lip going around the top edge. The bottom is marked with the numbers C-2. It does have 3 chips around the bottom section. This crock has a different apperance as far as its molding goes, it has a really wavy appearanceto the way it was molded which leads me to believe it is really an old piece. Up for sale is a rare decorated stoneware crock fresh out of a local estate. This crock is signed with an impressed mark on the front"John Bell. Waynesboro" This crock measures approximately 7.5 inches tall with a opening diameter of approximately 6.75 inches. This crock is decorated with tulips around the body. The interior of the crock is glazed while the outside of the crock is unglazed redware. This crock is in great shape. There is one tiny flat chip approximately 1/4" by 1/8" on the underside of the rim right above the signature. There is also a firing line across the bottom of the crock. Up for auction is this antique stoneware crock with 2 brass spigots on the bottom. This could have been used in the medical field. Or something agricultural from what I am told. It is in excellent condition, no chip or cracks or visible damage of any kind. The crock measures 12" tall and with the spigot it is 143/4" overall, it measures 61/4" across the top rim.
