Opaline" refers to many forms of opaque and colored glass. Opaline glass is also specifically known as a decorative style of glass made in France from 1800 to the 1890s. The glass is opaque or slightly translucent, and can appear either white or brightly colored in shades of green, blue, pink, black, lavender and yellow. Pair of Small Jade Green (French?) Opaline Art Glass Vases with Stands GORGEOUS!
Exquisite" is the word I would use to describe these small vases. Not sure of maker or age. But they are formed of beautiful jade green glass that seems to glow all by itself. They are so smooth, they almost seem to be carved and polished instead of blown or molded. The vases measure about 3 1/2 inches tall and about 2 inches across at the opening. Each has a carved wooden stand that elevates them about 1 1/4 inches. The vases are almost identical, but as can be seen in photos, one is slightly thinner walled than the other and about an ounce lighter(3 ounces compared to 4.2 ounces. On the inner edge of the top lip of the thin-walled vase, there is section that has 4 or 5 extremely tiny indentations or possible flakes, which I believe were made during the original grinding/polishing stage, as opposed to later damage. The thicker walled ... morevase has none. Compare the last two photos taken of the same vase and you will see how tiny these spots are and how hard it is to see them! You might not even notice them without a loupe, but I wanted to disclose them. The brass has acanthus designs and scrolls and a number 407 on the bottom of the brass base the lamp is in great condition which means no cracks or damage to the glass or the brass base works great. Frosted or opaline glass with painted enamel designs- orange/rust and white florals with bronzed gold stems and leaves. Sections of stems and centers of florals are raised enamel. Delicate white enamel design on back sides. Thin bands appear to have been gold at one time. But they have now dulled to a dark gray color. The gold can still be seen along bottom band on one vase. Pontil marks on bottom have a little roughness. Stand just under 7 1/2" tall. Do not know age or maker. Do not find any chips or cracks in glass. Very nice vintage condition. Each measures 9” tall and 3-1/4” in diameter at the base. They are hand blown with pontil scars on the bottom of each. They have flower and leaf decorations in colors of green. Red, cobalt blue, blue and white with gilt enameling. The rims, edges of pedestal and foot have a gilt highlight. When held to the light the glass shows a lot of fire. They are unmarked. One of the vases has an age split on one side near the bottom as you can see in the picture below and it appears to have been there a while. The vase won’t hold water. Other than that there is some wear to the gilt accents of the rim and edges of pedestal and foot otherwise the decoration is excellent ... moreand the glass is free of chips.
