Vintage Inlaid Wooden Work Sewing Box - Parquetry Detail Marquetry - Dual Drawer
Welcome to my Auction for this superb work box made specifically for storing sewing materials but would be ideal to use for storing trinkets and such. Beneath the lid reveals a beautifully decorated marquetry finished self of compartments suitable for all of your bits and pieces including two wheels for the cotton and a fold out pin cushion. Though it is not pictured. The drawer beneath is an empty space with no compartments or marquetry. As you should see. It has all of its hand finished qualities with various types of wood used to the marquetry and a veneered walnut to the lid. The age of the box is mixed as it looks to have been retouched over the years or could be a later hand made piece. The wood chip base is a good indicator of this. The piece still hold a lot off quality. The condition of the is moderate. There are areas of wear and ... moreuse namely to the outside of the box. Please inspect pictures below where you will see details of this; there are areas where the veneer to the outside has come away. Some of it has raised a little to the lid also in the form of a few air bubble like bumps. The lid has a natural. Unvarnished finish. The strip around the base is missing to the back and the left side is a little chipped, see below. Bar a few scuffs and repaired or slightly warped lids, the inner is in lovely, complete condition. The lid is also slightly warped and needs to be pressed down a little to lock but the lid is then held down firmly and locked securely. The locks work well though the lock to the lower drawer needs a strong push to work. As you can see. The keys are both a little different in design. The length of the actual box is 42cm x 34.5cm x 15cm whilst the lid is larger at 47cm x 38.5cm. I have more rare pieces in my other item's which you will find here. Thank you for your visit. Marquetry Wooden Picture African Village Scene--LOOK
Up for auction is a stunning example of hand-made African folk art in the marquetry style. I do not know the age of this piece. But rest assured it is quite old. It is hand-made of different kinds of wood, possibly burlwood, teak and mahogany, although I can't be sure. The details of the marquetry are phenomenal. The scene depicts an African village with a male squatting in the foreground, possibly building a fire, surrounded by four women and four children. There is also a monkey sitting in the foreground! 4.5" Marquetry Darning Egg with Handle for Mending, Handturned on Lathe
This marketry darning egg is 4.5" long. Nine blocks of wood were glued together checkerboard fashion. Then the total block was mounted on a lathe and turned while a carver cut the shape of the darning egg. There's a hole in the egg end where the wood was mounted onto the lathe. This egg shows lots of use in its intended function. Needle pricks thru socks being mended sometimes leave permanent nicks in the egg below. This would have been a treasure item in a sewing box. Rare early antique Japanese handmade. Hand inlaid, marquetry tansu cabinet circa 1918. Called a Haribako, it stored and displayed valuable keepsake items such as netsuke and jewelry. Likely made in Hakone Japan at the end of the Edo period. Inlay is all mixed wood. Thousands of different shapes and styles, all patch worked and fit together. The cabinet is being sold as found. Box opens up- design in the lid, red velvety lining inside the box. Approx 1.5 inches deep inside. Hinged lid. I can't even imagine how they make these boxes- such tiny tiny pieces, flawlessly fit together, smooth to the touch, tiny 6-sided star design around the lid rim- all four sides. All four sides, plus the lid(and the small design inside the lid) are decorated. Bottom is plain wood, varnished. We purchased this tray in 1969 at an open air market in Spain- can't remember if it was outside of Barcelona or Granada. The intricately designed tray is handcrafted of small pieces of inlaid wood and bone. Measures 15" x 13" x 3/4" Because it was only used for display. It has no drink rings or scratches on it. There is a hairline crack in clear varnish on one inner border which isn't very noticeable. This box measures 7 ½ by 11 ¾ by 4 ½ inches tall. On the top is an inlaid songbird sitting on a flower ... moreabout to go after a bumblebee. All four sides are also inlaid. On the inside is a removable tray with several compartments that have figured maple covers. When you remove the tray it reveals four small drawers and in the middle is an inlaid moth. On the bottom of one of the drawers is an inscription from the original maker. Which reads, Jakob Schatz from Donauschingen built in Eckernfoerde on 2 nd February. 1851” This finely inlaid Mahogany Box retains its original finish. It is difficult to see, but the cover has lifted very slightly on the left side. There also is a small repair to the front left side of the bracket base. The rest of this mid-19 th century inlaid sewing box is perfect with no other restorations. This is a beautiful antique or vintage inlaid marquetry frame. It's hard to date. But I'm going to say it's from the 1920s or 1930s. I'm sensing it's Italian or English. Overall. It measures 9 3/4" x 11 1/2" 24.8 cm x 29.2 cm) The back opening size is 5 1/4" x 7" 13.3 cm x 17.8 cm) The molding measures 2 3/8" wide(6 cm) The detail on this frame is just beautiful. It was definitely done by a professional craftsman. For some reason there were no nails used to make this frame. Only small wood connectors in the back. Because of this the frame is slightly loose and slightly separated where the corners meet. However, it is still very sturdy. There is one noticeable issue with it. Made around 1900 this antique Yosegi Jewelry Box needs restoration. As seen in the photos. The seams are coming apart and it needs restoration. LOOK AT PHOTOS CLOSELY. Front roll out door is missing. Up for auction is a really nice Japanese early 20 century marquetry inlaid compartment cabinet with pull out drawers and sliding door cabinets. Its a really lovely piece with lots of work gone into making it. Unfortunately there is a little damage to the side. There is a small piece of wood missing from the front cacus and also the top has some stain marks. please see pictures. You should see the aformentioned damage clearly. Antique French Carved and Marquetry Inlaid Coffee and Side Tables
I can only guess that these tables are from France. I don't really know for sure where they were fabricated. The side tables are a lighter shade then the coffee table. The carving and marquetry inlay matches on all three tables as well as the stretchers and finnals. These tables have no table top scratches that I can see and only mild wear to the feet and legs. The inlay is all intact and in great shape. The protective glass for the coffee table is in perfect shape and has no sharp edges. These tables will add to any home or office decor. The pictures are a good representation of true color. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Rosewood is a rich warm reddish brown wood that has a distinct grain with dark brown and black outlining. One variety of Rosewood can vary significantly from another even though it is of the same species. These Rosewoods. Native of India, South East Asia and Brazil, were dense and awkward to work with. It was renowned for quickly bluntening cutting tools and visibly darkening in colour when over prepared. Kingwood is a classic furniture wood. Almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. Occasionally it is used in the solid for small items and turned work, including parts of billiard cues, e.g. those made by John Parris. It is brownish-purple with many fine darker stripes and occasional irregular swirls. Occasionally it contains pale streaks of a similar colour to sapwood.
