Antique Grand Tour Bronze of a Roman Emperor/Greek Thinker on a Marble Base
A nicely detailed bronze statue designed to be sold to tourists during their Grand Tours of Europe during the later part of the 19th century—so obviously they could go home to damp climes and proudly show off their knowledge and taste. Height is about 6 inches including the stone base which measures about 3 1/4 inches square. Cruddy old polish residues that from a distance(like about a mile) resemble age wear. Stone base also looks antiquiee as if it was pried from the Forum or Colosseum. It was about as real as the Colored Wide Screen Hollywood versions of Ancient Roman. Gore Vidal. Btw was hired to write the screen play for Ben Hur—that horribly bad novel by the ex Union War Hero Lew Wallace who eventually crawled back to Indiana to await his rapture into the bosom of Christ—which never came soon enough. Anyhow, the novel was such a howler ... morethat Gore was stunned senseless—wandering out to the via via ventio where he was hit by an Italian lad on a Vespa delivering pizzas. Gore never fully recovered, although he did ask the Pizza boy to move back to Beverly Hills with him, and went to make a series of nasty snide snipes against Charles Heston hinting that Chuck had all the dramatic acting talent of a piece of plywood.

For your consideration is this fine Grand Tour Victorian Era hand carved shell cameo depicting an angel holding a young lady above the clouds. The cameo is housed in a stylized shield easel frame that can stand up for display or be worn as pendant with the small bale. The cameo measures 1.6" by 2.1" and is in excellent condition with no visible cracks. The frame measures 2.3" by 2.8. The frame is in very good condition with age appropriate wear and some discolorations on the back.

She was very wealthy and had never married and lived in the house her daddy built for her. Magnificent bronze figural inkwell in the shape of a Venetian Gondola with its Gondolier and oar intact. Probably made as a Grand Tour souvenir in the late 19th to early 20th century. This large gondola measures over 17" long by 4" tall to the Gondolier's hat, by 2.5" wide, and weighs 4 lbs. The top of the canopy in the middle of the gondola lifts off revealing a double inkwell; one of the original inserts is still there, the other is missing. The gondola is embossed with highly detailed decorative elements including the Lion of St. Mark and sea serpents. The young god Hermes sits completely naked, only with the wings on his feets in a relaxed pose. One leg is placed slightly back, the upper body is slightly turned. The fingers of his left hand holding a rod-shaped object. The Greek original is from the period around 320 BC was buried on the Vesuvius eruption and was rediscovered in 1758 in Pompeii. The piece is in very nice condition. The surface with thick dark patina. Marble base with repair under the hand of hermes. Height of sculpture 47cm. Length 50cm, total weight: 25 kg, bronze 8kg. VICTORIAN MICRO MOSAIC MICROMOSAIC 5 PLAQUE SET ROME GRAND TOUR SteamPunk
I haven't been on Ebay for a while but will be listing a number of items as I consolidate my collections. The first lot includes five(5) micro mosaic plaques of classic italian scenes in good(but imperfect) condition as described below. These beautiful items would have been brought back from a grand tour in the 1800s and were usually set into jewelry or into boxes. Thee are not set and could be kept as is for the beautiful antiques that they are or incorporated into jewelry of your own design. There are five plaques. Four are oval plaques with images of buildings many of which appear to be of Roman Forum sites such as the Temple of Vesta. There is also a small round image of waterfalls(Tivoli maybe? Measures from largest to smallest(measured on the backs) 1' x 3/4" 7/8" x 5/8" 3/4" x 9/16(2 this size) and 9/16 ... moreround. Condition: The condition on these delicate items is pretty darned good considering they are more than 100 years old and consist if tiny slivers of glass set in a mortar on a piece of black onyx. The black onyx usually means 1800s as opposed to blue lapis which are often much older or the gold stone which was later. The glass tiles that make up the mosaic are fine and of a quality that cannot be produced today. As show in the photo. The smaller three plaques seem to have small remnants of paper labels including a bit of glue on the back. I have not tried to remove either paper or glue and am selling them as is. One of these three has a significant chip in the onyx at the back. I have tried to picture it in a photograph but it is quite difficult to see in pictures. Both of the larger plaques are in good condition at the back. Please note that I have bumped the contrast and reduce shadow on the photo of the backs so that you can see the damage to the plaque at the lower left. This makes the others seem rougher than they actually are and a little more grey in color when they are actually jet black. The small tiles(tessere) that make up the images are in pretty good condition.
