5 GRAND TOUR Style Plaster Intaglios in Gold Shadow Frame and Lovely Details
This is a collection of five plaster intaglios that may be souvenirs of a Grand Tour in 19th century Europe. I think they have been painted a buff color with gold outside. They are in a vintage custom frame that measures 16.5" by 7" by 1 1/2" deep. The framer added very lovely embossed gold paper details. Each one measures about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" tall. The top two are figures and the bottom three are classical profile portraits. Since they are under glass I could not examine them but they were framed in the 1950s. A very nice set. A very nice collection of modern plaster casts of the friezes after John Henning(1771-1851) Of the reliefs from the Cellia of the Parthenon and the Phygalian Marbles. These are nice crisp castings and a lot better than some sets I've seen for sale! These are plain plaster. John Henning- John Henning came to London and saw the newly arrived Elgin Marbles that were on display at Burlington House. He began to study them and for 12 years completed a copy of the reliefs from the Cellia of the Parthenon and the Phygalian Marbles in slate to a scale of 1:20. They represent the battle of the Amazons and Centaurs against the Lapithae. Editions were made in plaster and the original slate sculptures are in the British Museum. Shipping worldwide is $35. Pair Grand Tour Oval Wood Frame Plaster Casting Cherubs Cast 5.25" x 4.30" glass
From a local estate. A pair of oval wood frames with black enamel/paint, convex glass, gold details and white plaster cherubs. Grand tour items from the mid 20th century and not the antique. I believe they are souvenirs from traveling abroad in the 1940's or 50's because though the frames are solid wood. The castings are not as detailed or intricate as those of 19th century. The frames are 5-1/4" high. 4-3/8" wide and 1" deep. Slight wear to the black enamel as shown in the photos. I ship daily and within 24 hours of payment. Which is due within 3 days. This antique Diary or Journal was kept by Helen French Kent who lived with her family on Benefit Street in Pawtucket. Rhode Island. Helen Kent was a young woman about fifteen years old when this journal was written. This diary documents the first part of the European Grand Tour that Helen took with her Mother Father and sister Ruth. Helen's father George Warren Kent owned the Narragansett Milling Co. a very successful grain business in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Helen's mother was originally from Attleboro, Massachusetts. Her maiden name was Lydia Elzadia Fairbanks. Helen's sister Ruth, Josephine Kent was seven years older than Helen. Helen's father was a very wealthy man and this year-long trip to see Europe was first class! The trip starts on Saturday July 5. 1902, they left Pawtucket at 4:45 and arrived at Fox Point in Providence, ... moreRhode Island where they boarded the steamboat"Puritain" to New York City via Newport and Fall River, Massachusetts. By morning they were sailing up the East River. The family spent two days in New York staying at the Broadway Central Hotel. On July 8th they boarded the Steamship"Pennsylvania" of the American-Hamburg line and sailed for Hamburg Germany. The ship arrives in Hamburg on the 19th of July. Shortly after the family's arrival in Hamburg, Mr. Kent rented an automobile to tour Germany. In 1902 the automobile industry was in its infancy and very few people owned cars as they were a very expensive luxury. Mr. Kent probably owned an automobile in Rhode Island as it was a very bold move to tour Germany in a car. Helen documents some of the problems and raucous that was caused by the automobile trip. Horses were not accustomed to motorized cars at this time and Mr Kent caused several horses to bolt out of control causing damage for which he paid. At one point the engine in the automobile died and had to be towed by two horses to the nearest farm where it was repaired by a blacksmith. Antique Victorian Grand Tour Micromosaic Lion of St. Mark Pendant/Brooch c.1870!
Dating to c.1865-1880 this beautiful Grand Tour pendant/brooch features a micromosaic of the Lion of St. Mark set into a goldstone background. The Lion of Saint Mark represents St. Mark the evangelist(pictured in the form of a winged lion) And is the symbol of the city of Venice and the former of Republic of Venice. This jewel was very likely purchased in Venice by a wealthy Victorian lady taking the Grand Tour of Italy. This brooch also has a loop for a chain so that it can also be worn as a pendant. The tesserae are smooth to the touch. An indication the best quality. The winged lion is depicted standing on a green ground with one paw holding an open book. It is set into a plaque of shimmering goldstone. The entire panel is set in a rose gold setting. I am unsure if it is gold filled or solid gold. But the rose color compliments the goldstone. ... moreIt appears that it has made it into the 21st century in original condition. With no losses to the tesserae. This lovely object shows only the gentlest wear. And goldstone is often found cracked in these antique panels. There are just a couple of minuscule nibbles to the border of the black ground. and a very mild surface wear. I mention this for complete accuracy, as this is considered acceptable wear for a micro mosaic of this age. There are no repairs or cracks. It measures 1 1/4" x 1 1/2"

Antique Victorian Grand Tour micro-mosaic brooch. Floral theme
Lovely antique micro-mosaic brooch dating from the Victorian era and presumed Italian. Measures approx 3cm in diameter and weighs approx 8g. In good. Vintage condition. The pin and old-style clasp are in perfect working order. A few of the tiny black tesserae are missing, but it's very hard to tell as they're so small. Delicately detailed with intricate applied cannetille rosettes and bezels set with oval glass turquoise cabouchons. Hand crafted of a silver alloy. Alpaca. Pinion clasp. Segmented rectangles hinged together allow the bracelet to move for ease in wearing. Marked inside-HAND MADE. Since the cartouche mark is in English, it tells me that the bracelet was most likely made for the Grand Tour trade. Measures-7 1/8 inches in length. 5/8 inch in width. Grand tour Roman Bronze Boy with amphora Chiurazzi 19th century fake
Roman bronze boy with amphora.I thought this was authentic.I took it to a Dealer who used to sell Eygiptian and Roman antiques.He told me he had no reason to suspect it wasnt authentic and probably worth 100k.The patinabis so good and there are even lazurite crystals on the inner yhigh that you would expect to see with excavated bronzes.The style is perfect it even has inlaid copper eyes and phallus all consistant with roman bronzes.I sent pictures to sotherbys and they said no its Victorian.They provided me with a photo from a victorian catalogue from churazzzi.This foundery produced bronze fakes during the 19th century.They were the only company allowed by the goverment to make molds from origional relics.The hand is not broken on this bronze but an exact cast of the origional with with a damaged hand.you can see the individual dowel pins ... morewhere they would have fit into the hand and traces of oxidized lead.It is a superb fake.The company made bronzes in the early 20th century but these all seem to have a foundery mark and the patina is unconvincing as to be a real Roman Bronze.I had a good look to find the origional of this bronze and I couldnt find it.Hopefully Sotherbys is correct and this isnt Roman era.Brought back by a American serviceman after the war! I have included two other 20th century examples sold at auction made by the same firm but not as old.In the picture of the vase you can see it is also damaged at the base and has a wedge of lead added to level it off.Also another 20th century bronze boy by Roman Bronze works NY.you can see the patina is unconvincing and looks like a garden ornament. This is a stunning late 1800's lava cameo pendant. It is framed in 14K yellow gold which completely covers the back of the cameo. It comes with a short 14K fine gold chain. The chain is marked 14K and is about 5" long. The carving is of a lovely Grecian lady although her nose has a little damage. Marked CC 14K on the back. Acid tested 14K. Size about 1" x 0.7" Weight 3.8 grams. This was probably a Grand Tour souvenir from Italy- Italian jewelers used to specialize in these carved lava cameos. I will combine shipping. Featuring gilded, hand-painted and transfer decorations including the Roman Goddess Diana on chariot. Measurements: 14 x 8.25 x 6 inches; 35.6 x 21 x 15.2 cm. There are no visible damages(no cracks nor chips) but a bit of house paint at the lip and the neck of one vase which we will have carefully removed prior to shipment.
