Fine Antique Grand Tour Lava Cameo Brooch of Cupid and the Eagle of Zeus- Wow!
Offered is a spectacular antique lava cameo brooch that was most likely a souvenir of the Grand Tour and presented as a gift to someone special. It is carved of lava from Italy by a master hand. This cameo depicts a rare subject. Cupid(Eros) riding on the back of and hugging the eagle of Zeus. In mythology, Cupid and Zeus had a complicated relationship. Cupid had to do many favors for Zeus in the love department. Here in this cameo, as depicted in the painting shown, Cupid may be represented as buttering up Zeus to ask for Psyche's hand in marriage. This cameo is rich in detail and movement. From the wings of Cupid and the eagle, to Cupid's quiver of arrows, to the three dimensional statuesque carving, this is a fantastic and rare piece. It is getting difficult to find lava pieces preserved in such good condition, this one dating ... moremost likely to the 1850's. It is set in a gilt frame with the original c and t clasp and pin. The condition is very good to excellent antique condition- very slight flaws that do not detract from the stability or appearance of this piece are: fleabite to Cupid's nose, 3 very faint almost invisible hairlines at bottom. Frame has tiny ding in back, of no importance. It measures It measures 1 3/4" by 1 1/2" by 3/8" Fabulous and rare and impressive Victorian period piece. I believe it is likely a souvenir of a Grand Tour during the"Belle Epoch" era of the late nineteenth century. The small urn is a classic shape and the ormolu is really special. The center cartouche is a winged cherub playing the harp. This piece measures 6" high. 3 1/2" across at the handles and 1 3/4" at the bolted base. It is in very good estate condition with no damage or repairs found. The gilding is in great shape as well. This little beauty should be a fine choice for any collection! Item Description While starting bids may vary I ALWAYS POST WITH NO RESERVE! Up for auction is a beautifully unique Teal Perfume Bottle in Golden Ormolu Stand. It is so remarkable similar to the Palais Royal and Grand Tour perfume bottle sets that I feel this is the Bohemian version that one may have purchased on their travels through Czechoslovakia. I have seen similar style decoration in French and Italian art glass ~ so you will have to decide for yourself. The art work is delicately done and the flowers are raised which gives a great affect like they are coming out of the bottle. I do notice tiny outer edge chips in a few petals. Nothing major, but the rest of the enamels are intact. The colors are stunning against the teal back ground and gold stand only adds more dimension and"pop" I do note a small shallow nick to the center ... moreof the bottom of the bottle and I think this is likely from removing and replacing the bottle in the stand over a number of years. There is an old, repaired chip to the side of the lower end of the stopper and I completely understand why they went to the trouble ~ there is no way to find a substitute for such a lovely bottle. Of course when the stopper is in place you won't see it at all. So this set is all original which I think is what matters most to the collector. I know it didn't stop me from acquiring it! Otherwise there is only the usual light surface wear to the glass& gold loss to the neck/rim that you expect for an antique item, nothing unusual. You will be reassured by the photos that I am over-exaggerating the wear issues, but I like to mention everything I can think of for full disclosure. This item is not new so don't expect perfect. Remember ~ Charm comes with age. The bottle with stopper in the stand is 9 3/8 inches tall. Just the stand is 5 7/8 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide. Just the bottle with stopper in place is 6 1/2 inches tall and the base is 2 1/4 inches at it's diagonal measurement. This is a gorgeous set that you will treasure

These mounts hold a piece of black stone, probably onyx, and the tiny fine pieces of micro mosaic make up individual unique little pictures of birds, nice detail in these little birds. These oval drops measure 14mm x 12mm. The gold hooks are a vintage addition to the original drops. These type of earrings were normally purchased by rich Victorian ladies whilst on a Grand Tour. For sale is a round tile trivet made by WT Copeland in the 1900s. This is a poly-chrome or multi-color transferware tile. And much rarer. More common is a single color blue/green trivet. The trivet for sale is in excellent condition. No chips, fissures, etc one minor minute porcelain bubble indentation in the rim, and I had to look for it to find something minor to report. It is slightly in the paint and I surmise it was from the tool that grabed the piece when being made. The tile scene depicts"The Great Temple of Diana At Ephesus" Measuring 6 1/4" in diameter. This is transfer printed in a multiple of colors on a creamy white ground- nice transfer design on the edge at as a border. Made by WT Copeland, England, ca 1900. Here is a late 19 th century/ early 20 th century bronze Grand Tour statue of Michelangelo’s Bacchus. The Roman god of wine. In a reeling pose suggestive of drunkenness. A small satry stands behind him. It has wonderful patina and stands almost 11” tall on a flat black marble base. This small bronze was typical of the souverniers the wealthy American and British tourists would bring home from their“Grand Tour” of Europe. This particular statue would have come from Florence at that time. This is a nice heavy antique bronze and would be a nice addition to any collection. Background: The original was commissioned by Raffaele Riario. A high-ranking Cardinal and collector of antique sculpture. When he rejected it. Jacopo Galli. Fabulous Hand Painted Wooden Bowl from European Grand Tour period- 18th Century- certainly a souvenir of Rome. The Grand Tour was the traditional trip of Europe undertaken by mainly upper-class European young men of means. The custom flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transit in the 1840s. And was associated with a standard itinerary. It served as an educational rite of passage. Though primarily associated with the British nobility and wealthy gentry, similar trips were made by wealthy young men of Northern European nations, and after the second half of the 18th century some South American, U.S. and other overseas youth joined in. During the Grand Tour and industry evolved in the toured countries of manufacturing souvenir's for the guests to purchase and take back with them. I am pleased to offer this lovely antique Hand Carved Lava Cameo. It depicts a Beautiful Bacchante Maiden with grapes. Vines and tendrils flowing in her hair. The lava in this cameo is a gorgeous shade of blue with a slight hint of green. It is expertly carved. It was a souvenir from somebody's Grand Tour and dates to about 1860. These lava cameos were favorite souvenirs of ladies who traveled to Italy- this status symbol proved that they had been on the Grand Tour which was an essential undertaking of any Victorian with means. Lava from Mt. Vesuvius provided Italian cameo carvers a plentiful medium to create these small works of art. It measures 1” by ¾” not including the extended pin. Up for auction it a great black glass intaglio pendant depicting Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion. Please read below the details of the myth. The Tassie style intaglio is set in marked(925) sterling silver bezel and includes the 20" sterling silver chain. The Pendant is about 1.25" tall excluding the loop and bail. This is a nice group of six antique plaster intaglios. All in yellow paper surrounds with hand-written numbers on the side. These have been professionally mounted on a blue board set in a silver wood frame with no glass. It measures 8 inches wide by 22 1/2 inches long. These are all in very good condition. I have a matching framed set listed separately. History: In ancient Greece and Rome. Precious stones called gems were engraved with insignia that, when impressed on wax or clay, were used to sign or seal documents. These carved gems were often placed in elaborate settings and were valued not only for their distinctive designs, but also for the beauty of the carving. Up for sale is an antique 19th Century Pietra Dura picture frame. The gold metal is bronze acting as the frame and easel. The Pietra Dura is in great condition. Blue green, white flowers. The piece opens up like a door serving the purpose as a picture frame. Has the inside glass for the frame. I believe that the wire stand on the back is an old replacement. Compare the actual cost of postage on the package, to what you were charged. I do not make money on shipping. This is a very early box. Metal ... moreparts have a lot of patina. Will leave any cleaning to new owner. Jar is hinged, and has the old"S" style clasp. The top is hand painted, heavy raised white enamel, done in the Mary Gregory style. The legs and frame are of narrow embossed brass, kind of hard to capture in pictures. The legs are bent a bit, but are soft metal, so easily adjusted. The glass appears to be blown, as the stem is held in place by plaster of Paris. The box still has powder, and possibly the Original Swans Down puff. Puff is in good condition considering the age. This Jar is about 4 1/2" across the bowl, and about 4" tall. I am hoping to box under a pound. Please view pictures. Questions are always welcome. I will be adding more items as time permits. 1 Large Framed set of 6 carved Parthenon friezes.this is frame number two) There are 6 white strips of scenes from the elgin marbles.On a black framed mount.which were the friezes found on and around the Parthenon/Acropolis in Greece.originally done by the artist John Hennings.these are reproductions of those I am sure.they are in excellent condition,and are heavy.There is a metal ring hanger on the back of each for display.Very interesting and decorative,and would make a nice display in a study or hallway.A decorators delight!
