Roman - LARGE bronze bowl FRENCH FIND La Turbie 100% original unrestored
Found in the south of France. A large Roman bronze bowl, this came from an area near La Turbie which in Roman times was a significant military outpost and important military base for several centuries. It is exactly as it came out of the ground, it hasn't been cleaned at all. There is loss to the base as you can see in the photos but what remains is perfectly solid and stable. It is a thick bowl of good quality, sometimes these things were thin sheet but this is heavier and a better made item. The diameter accross the top is 10 1/4 inches and it stands 2 1/8 inch tall. The rim is turned over and thick, the base is made from thinner grade bronze. It's hard to find"as found" condition items now. WE SHIP WORLDWIDE- 1. Found by a detectorist in the south west region of France. A decorative and nice quality embossed copper plaque showing a sheperdess and her flock. I am dating this at mid C18th, i dont know the exact use but it has 6 small holes around the edge where it could be fixed to something. It could be a furniture mount? The detailing in the lady is very good, you can see the style of dress and folds in the clothing, the flock of sheep, a wooden bench and a hut in the background. It hasnt been overcleaned, the surface has a nice patination to it with the remains of some silver plating. Interesting little item, size is 4 x 1 3/4 inches. It measures 1 foot high(not including the chain in that measurement) and it is 1 foot 6.5 inches wide. They is a bronze flame on top of the wood center with a beautiful bronze mount with bronze candle holders and intricate porcelain flowers on the arms of both sconces! There are 4 cracked flowers and about 7 missing in all on both pieces, but they could be replaced. I think that these might have been made in the 1970's to the 1980's or so. They are newly wired and have screw holes in the back plate for mounting them. There isn't a surface that is left undecorated. Beautifully cast dragons on all four corners support the main body of the clock, mounted on its wonderful pierced base. These dragons hold between them a pivoting"urn" to either side, while to the lower center is a well defined mask of a smiling imp. To the top is an almost fountain-like plume behind a stunning mythical bird with its tail feathers fanned out. To the center is the dial with its cartouched numerals and yet more decoration. All behind the convexed, bevelled glass and ... morebrass bezel. It's worth mentioning that the clock has the same attention to detail on both the front and back. All this beauty x 2! In side the clock beats a quality 8 day bell striking French movement. It strikes the half and full hours on a single. Sweet sounding bell. It is in full working order, keeping good time and is complete with its original numbered pendulum. The clock stands a full 18 1/2 inches high. 8 1/2 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Being over 100 years of age, it does have signs of that passage through time. The case is perfect, no damage or repair, although it is certainly not as bright as it used to be in places. It also has a beautiful painted scene of birds and flowers at the bottom. There are markings on the bottom. But they are difficult to make out. Finials and the base are in perfect condition with no restorations. The bronze fittings and the ormolu are also perfect. There is a tiny damage to the hand painted enamel face just to the right of the number“6. I didn’t notice is at first, but one of the black feet is a replacement. The rest of the enamel face and the fancy gilt hands are perfect with no restorations. Both springs are in very good, strong condition and this clock is trying to rum without the pendulum attached. When I tried to attach t pendelum I noticed that the thin spring piece of metal that holds the pendulum to the clock is out of kilter. If this little piece is adjusted properly, I guarantee this clock will keep good time once again. There are no other problems or any restorations to this late 19 th century French marble and bronze Mantle Clock. French Art Deco Enamel&Bronze Clock
At auction is one very high quality example of French Art Deco. I know the clock movement is that of a pocketwatch variety and is marked CH HOUR FRANCE 2 ADJUSTMENTS and 15 JEWELS. I do not know whether this movement is an 8 day movement or simply a 40 hour or so type there is no mark to indicate. The movement is dirty but wants to run with any shift of direction of the clock. The balance wheel begins it's motion. Examination of balance wheel area shows very old and dry lubricant which is likely the only thing keeping this movement from running well. Charles Hour was a very high line Horologist working in Paris in the last quarter of the 19th century and into the first quarter of 20th century. A quick check of the Internet will reveal Tiffany and Black Starr& Frost appear to be the USA's outlet for Charles Hour's products. ... moreThe indications given tend to show the company was no longer in business by about 1920 which both gives rise to questions and dates the piece to a very few years just before production at the CH Hour factory ceased and a few years afterwards when Ch Hour's wholesale customers still had inventory remaining. The clock dial has black Roman Numerals in good condition surrounding the dial in an exploded Art Deco manner. You can see there is enamel loss to the numerals. The dial itself appears to be bronze with a painted form of heavy gilding that as the photos indicate are in different stages of depth and brightness. FRANCE is on the dial under the numeral VI. The Clock hands are blued steel. The dimensions are very large for an enameled clock and may best be understood in the photo taken with a a 12 ounce/355ml COKE can which you can see is smaller than the clock. Approximate measurements are 7 1/4 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide. An examination of the form. Though porcelain face has a couple of tiny hairline cracks and a small shallow chip out of the porcelain right near the keyhole by the number"8" No other breaks or repairs that we can see. Please look closely at photos for the gorgeous details. Could use a cleaning, as it is quite dusty. We cannot find a name or manufacturer anywhere. Clock is heavy, weighing in at 10.8 lbs.
