Here is an antique oil lamp dating from the mid 1800's. It features a pattern glass top with a pottery stem in the form of a tree trunk with foliage. The base is slate. Burner marked BANNER P& A MFG. CO, MADE IN U.S.A. It does NOT have the chimney. Wick adjusting screw works fine and lamp is functional. There is a flat corner chip and small edge chips/roughness to the slate base. The pattern glass oil holder is made from a three part mold and is clean. Lamp measures 12" high to burner top, glass is approx. 5 1/2" wide, base measures approx. 4 1/2" square. Antique Victorian Sternauware Miniature? Oil Lamp Filler Copper w Pump c1900 Description: This is an antique Victorian era oil lamp fill marked Sternauware. New York, and dating. I would guess, to about 1900. It is just 4 1/2 inches tall to the top of the cap and because of its small capacity was possibly used to fill miniature oil lamps. The pump is untested but has good spring action. The 5-inch spout is complete with a cap cover and chain. The filler is non magnetic and may be copper or copper plated brass. It could be polished to gem-like quality. The filler is in good condition with a faint dent in the tiered portion of the top. A superb little lamp filler to use or display. We were told that this was a Dietz lamp globe or shade yet we are somewhat skeptical. So maybe it is a globe but if so then we have no idea what lamp or lantern it came from(or how it would work since there is only one opening) If we are in error here(And I feel 60% that we are) please let us know so we can edit our listing to truly reflect what this is. Based on an advertisement in the November 29, 1908 edition of the trade journal"Crockery& Glass" McDonald attributes ... morethe lamp to the Consolidated Lamp& Glass Company of Pittsburgh, Pa. During its heyday, from about 1890 to 1910, Consolidated was one of the largest producers of glass, and especially lamps, in the U. S. They had an extensive line of night lamps produced in a wide variety of colors. They were particularly noted for their high gloss cased glass(where the glass item was coated with a layer of clear glass creating a very shiny, three dimensional finish. In fact, Melvin Murray(Fostoria, Ohio Gass II" credits Nicolas Kopp(the director of Consolidated's operations) and Consolidated with creating this technique and for many years being the only glass company to use it. It is this casing technique that was used to make this lamp and which makes this lamp so attractive. In inspecting this lamp. It appears that the inner layer of pink glass is quite thin, while the crystal clear coating is thicker. It is perhaps the thickness of the clear coating that creates the high sheen and gives the lamp an extra level of dimensionality. But with some striking differences, is shown in Figure 245 of Marjorie Hulsebus' second book"Miniature Lamps of the Victorian Era" At first glance, the differences between the two lamps ... moreseem to be in the painted decor; this lamp has somewhat muted"natural colors" Smith in the caption to the photo) while the lamp in the Hulsebus book has somewhat gaudier circus-like colors with a yellow and black striped band on the edge of the elephant's blanket and multiple colored stars painted on the blanket. But a closer look reveals differences that would indicate more fundamental differences. On this lamp the elephant's ears are outstretched and there is a small dog with a blue ball between the elephant's trunk and his left front leg. On the lamp in the Hulsebus book the elephant's ears are flattened against his head and instead of a dog, a red seal is positioned between the elephant's trunk and front legs. In the Smith book. The lamp has a white satin globe with painted Ivy decor; in the Hulsebus book, the lamp has a solid green painted globe. The differences in globes is not surprising. It is our understanding that many of these old figural oil lamps were sold, at least to wholesalers, if not at retail, without a specific shade or globe. Nicolas Kopp, an immigrant from Alsace Lorraine where his family had been glassmakers for generations, began his U. S. glass-making career at the Hobbs Glass Company. He joined Fostoria as the plant manager at its formation and moved to Consolidated with the merger. This"Ermine" or"Brady's Night Lamp as it is called by collectors) is one of several lamps which McDonald notes were probably produced first at Fostoria and later at Consolidated. Or glow, when viewed under"black" light(see the last photo and the note below which explains this phenomenon and why it dates this lamp as being prior to that war) We suspect, based on the type and style of hardware(burner and collar) that this lamp may have been made in Europe. According to Fil Graf(in"The Lamp Collector's Guide: Second Edition" the six-pointed star logo on the burner thumb wheel looks like one of a number of different markings used by Lempereur& Bernard, a company with operations in Liege, Belgium and Paris, France. It is pictured in Figure 291 of Marjorie Hulsebus' second book"Miniature Lamps of the Victorian Era" Hulsebus briefly describes ... morethe lamp but does not give any background information about it. We can, however, make some inferences about the lamp, from it and from the information that is in the book. What makes this lamp unusual are its proportions-it being almost as wide as it is tall. We suspect that this design was intended to insure that the lamp was stable. Much as so-called"Captain's Decanters" had very wide bases in order to make them stable on a ship at sea. Since night lamps are by design small and were often used in children's rooms, it seems that the chance of them being tipped over might have been a concern. Thus, the design of this lamp may have been intended to alleviate that concern. The lamp has a style of brass collar found on European lamps rather than the style of collar usually found on U. S. made lamps. In addition it has a burner(probably German made. Or at least with a German name) known as a"Spar Brenner" or"savings burner" These small burners were made specifically for night lamps and were very sparing in their use of fuel and thus were economical. We further suspect that the lamp may have been made in Scandinavia. And probably in Sweden

This lamp has a shade shaped just like the one shown in Figure 148 of"Miniature Lamps" In her"Price Guide for Miniature Lamps" Marjorie Hulsebus rates all three variations of this lamp as being"scarce" see the note below on our use these ratings in eBay listings) Since June of 2002, we've seen just eighteen other examples of this variation of the lamp, but at least twelve of those had partially frosted shades(see below) and no more than six had totally clear shades and totally clear bases. So it seems to us that a lamp like this one that shows up on eBay about once every year and a half to once every 2 years can legitimately be considered to be scarce. According to both Melvin Murray(Fostoria. Ohio Glass, II) and Ann McDonald(Evolution of the Night Lamp" this lamp was manufactured by the Fostoria Glass Company and introduced in 1890. Anthony Hobson(in his books"Lanterns Which Lit our World" Volumes 1 and 2) shows one labeled"Cadet" another labeled"The Little Gem" and a tin lantern labeled"Pearl" We've also seen a lamp called"Little Bob's" which Thuro, Oil Lamps: The Kerosene Era in North America" mentions as being frequently found in Canada and which we've recently discovered was made by the Ontario Lantern and Lamp Co, of Hamilton Ontario) and one or more others with unspecified names. These lamps vary in the shape, placement and size of the vent holes in the cap and below the burner and in the shape of the font. Some are made of brass, some of tin and some are found in both tin and brass versions. Without close inspection, it's tough to tell one from the other. Larger than a miniature, or night lamp, yet smaller than the typical full-size lamp are generally referred to as"junior" size and sometimes as"junior size banquet lamps" They may have been used on a Victorian dining room ... moretable or sideboard, in a parlor or in a lady's boudoir. They were as decorative and elegant as they were functional and were more likely to be found in homes of the wealthy. They emitted enough light to enable clear vision, but probably not enough to read by. This particular example of this type of lamp is pictured in Figure 431 of Marjorie Hulsebus' second book"Miniature Lamps of the Victorian Era" and is. In fact, from her personal collection. It is the very same lamp shown in the book. We don't know what company made this lamp or just when it was made. However. We do know that it is European in origin and most likely French. We deduced this from the fact that the bottom of what the Hulsebus book identifies as a silver-plated base is marked"DÉPOSÉ" which is French for"filed" or registered meaning that some aspect of the lamp(most likely its design) was registered with the government. For sale is a antique hanging oil lamp that has a very nice hand painted glass shade. The lamp has been converted for electrical use and is currently configured to be hard wired into a ceiling. But it does come with a long cord and chain if you want to convert it to a hanging style lamp. The glass shade is in excellent condition and has no cracks or chips. there is some patina on the metal surfaces, but I did not clean it because I like that rustic look. Item is sold as is, so please carefully review all of the photos for the material condition of the item. This lantern would look great hanging above a small round kitchen table in a rustic country style kitchen.
