Late 1800s Antique Large Civil War Bronze U.S. Grant Authentic Early
Fabulous Early Bronze of Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant mounted on the likely original oak display board. This bronze is an early one and likely dates to the period immediately after the Civil War when Grant was a National Hero and before his Presidency Circa 1870-1880. These early original bronzes are rare and not to be confused with the many produced later and for the centenial in the 1960s. The use of the square nuts on the back(with undisturbed patina) and the overall high quality and weight of the casting differentiate it from the later plaques. They had a surplus of brass post Civil War years so heavy castings were common. The bust itself is 9" tall and shows Grant in profile with his four stars. The wooden backing is about 9-1/2" x 12" A simply wonderful addition to a Civil Wall collection wall.

Antique African Art - Bamun - Bamileke Tribe Cameroon Heavy Cast Bronze Ladle
Offered at auction is an antique bronze ladle. Origin Bamun, probably Bamileke tribe, from Cameroon. Heavy casting, weight 7-8 pounds, 19.5" in length, with a wide, deep ladle bowl. The piece is highly detailed, estimated age from the later 19th century to 1930's era. The large end of the ladle depicts an African face, highly stylized, with cheek scarifications, and detailed hairstyle. The handle of the ladle contains an African native, tall and thin, with a slightly distended belly, clad in a native breechcloth. The figure is seated on or leaning against what might be a tree stump, and is holding an object in the right hand, probably a pestle for crushing herbs and berries. The face and bald head show further evidence of scarification. The ladle has a heavy patina, which is built up especially on the handle where it would be held ... moreby fingers and thumb. The inside of the ladle bowl is quite darkened and heavily encrusted with material from long-term usage. The collector I acquired it from in the mid-1990's was a former museum director and was an expert on African art. He said that the ladle was likely from one of two possible sources, either the house of a wealthy king or chief, or from an important shaman or witch doctor. He believed it was the latter, because of the human figure on the handle holding the pestle, and the scarifcations on the large face and the handle figure. His thinking was that the ladle was used in the preparation and cooking of medications and potions, and that figure ont he handle and the face on the bowl of the ladle were meant to draw out the medicinal essence from the materials being mixed and cooked together. All in all. This is a wonderful example of tribal art, a great native bronze casting in great condition. I've always found it fascinating that in African tribal work there is no division between artworks and utilitarian objects. It is all art. When one melts silver one can lose as much as 5% of the weight in the smelting process and I can not be held responsible for weight lost after melting. I do not generally melt anything that is well made as it makes little sense to me. So any potential loss should be considered before purchasing my items. All my items are measured with a standard tape measure and are rounded off to the quarter inch. I attempt to be as accurate as possible. I cannot begin to know how to use this instrument but I can explain what I see. of course the end cap comes off and there is a little button you slide over to see through the scope. the level works just fine. the wood base is not cracked but it is aged wood slightly darker at leg bottoms the middle sections there is also remnents of a leather strap on one leg that was used to bundle the legss together. They are gilt and patinated bronze featuring an Egyptian emperor bust at the top with three light candelabra in the form of heralding trumpets. Each with a face on the curve. The gilt leafy wreaths add to the Impressiveness of these 20 inch tall ormolu wall sconces.
