Antique"JAKES" Clothing Flatiron Sadiron Another iron I had displayed atop a shelf of other vintage and antique clothing irons in my mud room for many years. I included some interesting facts regarding types of flatirons and their history. Below. This iron weighs 4lbs. 8.8 ounces and measures 47.75" tall, 5.25" long and 3.25" wide. The sadiron- whose name derives from the Old English word"sald. meaning solid- first appeared in the 17th century. The basic sadiron is a shaped piece of metal, with a polished base and attached metal handle. These irons were heated in front of an open fire or on a stove. The undesirable aspect of this, however, was that it heated the handle as well, so they had to be held with a potholder or thick glove. Sadirons were heavy, usually ranging from 5 to 9 pounds, and the weight contributed ... moreas much as the heat to the pressing process. The simplest of these was the charcoal iron. Whose hollow interior could be filled with smoldering coals. In addition to being rather smoky, it was difficult to get a sufficient draft to keep the coals burning. For this reason, they were equipped with high, spout-like openings, so that the coals could be fanned by inserting a bellows, or by swinging the iron back and forth vigorously. In the late 1800s. Other types of self-heating irons were developed that used gasoline and alcohol as fuel, which was stored in small metal tanks at the back of the iron. For Sale is a Large Heavily Carved Pair of Soapstone Foo Dogs(Temple Dogs) Unmarked. But most likely made in China around the end of the 19th century The carving is amazing and intricate. Everytime I look at these I see another detail I didn't notice before Size: bases are about 5 inches square and they are each about 12 inches high Color: typical gray shading to red soapstone Condition: one is in pretty good condition with only minor nicks; the other was seriously damaged at some point. The base being glued back on, missing two columns and other small damages that probably occured at the same time; nonetheless these are magnificent temple dogs and should not be dismissed lightly simply because they are not perfect These are very heavy. Antique Silver Serving Platters, Butter Dish, & Creamer
In this set there are four beautiful antique silver plate wares; The first is a grape platter by Homan mfg. company. Quadruple plated, VERY rare piece. It was appraised in 2003 for $289 and sold in auction for $390. The second is a large serving platter by wm rodgers(810) in perfect condition. It shows the classic bare tree design in bottom. There is also a cute creamer pour cup stamped Paul revere style. This piece captures a great shine. Lastly. There is a very intricate butter dish with cover, it's stamped 141 silver-plate. Individually these would come to a sum of around $450 but honestly I'm not that patient to wait for them all to sell. All pieces have been gently cleaned with a mild soap and water. The silver plate shines great, but could still use a bit of polish. The glass insert is pattern crystal and quite heavy indeed and free of any damage with no chips or cracks whatsoever. Also know as Guan Yim or Kuan Yin, the Godess of compassion, mercy and kindness. Holding what appears to be a lotus flower in the left hand. Representing the purity of mind necessary to achieve enlightenment. The carved detail really has to be seen to appreciate. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS RUNNING RIGHT NOW Up for auction is a Japanese carved Wood Frog(Toad) Figure. The Figure is a very interesting and unusual example. I did see a very similar piece in a book. Which said it was carved of fruitwood and done by a certain artist and that the works were desirable and collected. The Toad is carved of a beautiful hu of wood as you can see, which has great and very interesting natural grain designs. The figure also has a nice patina to the wood indicating it has some good age to it. The figure is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Great Antique Wicker Serving Tray - Nice Tapestry Piece Under Glass!
While it has some areas where the varnish has scratched from the wicker. This is still a great looking serving tray! I'm sure the scrapes could easily be touched up with dark paint or even one if those wood markers which hide dings. The tray is 13" x 19" There is a fantastic tapestry material under glass which is a scene of trees. The sides are wicker and the handles are bent wood. The bottom is old felt which could easily be changed as well. There is only 1 piece of wicker that I can see that is broken and I've tried to take a photo of it. Very unique and rare wooden tray. Decorated around the edges with wooden mosaic inly. The tray is made of exotic woods. The center of the tray features a black and white photograph commemorating the U.S.S. Memphis armored cruiser lost in the Tsunami of August 29, 1916 off Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Memphis lost 43 crew members, some on a motor launce attempting to return men to the shore, others when the boilers exploded onboard. The ship went aground near rocky coastal cliffs and the surviving officers and men, many dreadfully injured, had to be removed by ship-to-shore lines. The photo is on a background of beautiful and colorful butterfly wings which have been layed over each other to form a gorgeous matt for the photo. Handwritten under the photo in gold in. Old SNOWSHOE found in Idaho/Montana Backcountry in 1938 DECORATIVE Antique OOAK
Here's an old HANDMADE SNOWSHOE that was found on a trip to the backcountry of the Idaho-Montana border in 1938. I purchased it at an estate sale about 10 years ago from a small warehouse that had been turned into a personal museum. The snowshoe is made of wood and rawhide leather. It measures 58" x 11 1/2" There are some cracks in the wood on both sides of the curve at its widest point(shown in close up photos) Looks like all the original rawhide is still here. The snowshoe is a bit dirty/dusty from hanging on a wall for many years but has a great vintage patina and would look fantastic on a cabin wall. For bid is a great old Wireless No. 12 Cigar Lighter by Eldred Mfg. Co. in Chicago. Beautiful oak case. External parts have a super patina of age to them but would clean nicely if a person was so inclined. Needs a new battery to hook to the old Ford solenoid in order to create the spark when pulling down on the handle to light the compressed white gas from the tank. Untouched original measuring 7 ¾” wide by 9 ¾” deep and standing 16” tall– weighs 10# as is. I will combine items to save on shipping. Please check out pictures for condition.
