This is an antique sterling silver napkin ring. It is hallmarked for Sheffield 1912-13 and has the maker's mark CB&S. The napkin ring is very ornate and decorative and it has the initials'TOM' engraved in the central cartouche but this could be flooded to remove. Dimensions; height(down centre where it is engraved) 3.7cm. Width from side to side 5cm and distance from front to back 4.2cm. Weight; approx. 25.5 grams. As usual with these items, the detail on the dog and the engravings is excellent. Quite an amazing piece. It is marked 4311 underneath and has been located by Gottschalk and Whitson to have been made by Wilcox Silver Plate Co. See photo below. G&W valued it at $350-$500 in 1996. More than 16 years ago. This figural napkin ring is in very good to excellent condition. I have not polished it. Just washed it in warm soapy water, as I normally do. It has a nice shiny patina. After some extensive research(w/o a guide on Victorian Napkin Ring unfortunately) I have to admit this particular early 20th century Silver Plated Napkin Ring is quite scarce. As you can see it features what looks like a native woman(with child on her back) An Emu and, of course, the napkin ring resting on a map of Australia with the provinces(states? New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory, etc) stamped into the metal. Napkin ring has EPNS and 1610 etched above that on the underside. Measures about 3 5/8" tall X 4 1/2" X 3 5/8" and is in"as found" condition-NOT polished with tarnishing, no engraving, slightly loose screw, and a little"wave" in the base edge near the emu. This Antique Silverplated Napkin Ring shows one o f the most intricate and detailed engravings/stamping I have seen. The detail in this piece is amazing and reveals new things everytime you look at it. The Antique Napkin Ring depicts the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine Battles hip in Havana Harbor in 1898. The U.S.S. Maine was the U.S. Navy's 2nd Commissioned Battleship which was p atrol ling Cuban waters protecting interests. No one took responsibility for the sinking of the ship. However, the U.S. Naval Co urt of Inquiry concluded the ship was sunk by a mine. This incident served as a catalyst for the Spanish-American War later that year.
