The memento here shown is entirely worked in human hair(within the frame) and it is one of the larger of these we ever find. The oval frame is 9.5" x 8.15" and with the deep bomb glass. It's approximately 1.5" deep. I'm assuming this is a young woman's locks, though it is true that a boy's hair was grown long until the age of 5, at which time ... morehis hair was cut short and he began to wear'britches' or pants and was now his father's son rather than his mama's baby, and we have seen hair ornaments done with notation that they are the hair of the son at age 5, upon his transition to being a big boy. Whether girl or boy, this certainly represents a full cut of long hair. No gray at all in that light chestnut braid, so we know it's a young person or child's hair. The other possibility is that it is the shorn hair of a young daughter who enters a convent as novitiate and has her long beautiful hair cut short. That is another way these mementos have meaning. There is another lock of hair that may be that of the mother, as it's darker and has some gray- see our images. These are a bit macabre, some would say, but remember that in a time when few could afford photographer, the lock of hair kept might well represent the only remaining aspect of a person's life, apart from memories. And these became precious as well as fashionable in their time. Actually, this one is rather late in time, with the most elaborate of these coming a couple of generations earlier in late 1700s to mid-1800. But a treasur

Cypress, Willow and Monument - Antique French Mourning Hair Art, Sentimental Art
Blonde Weeping Willow. Brunette Cypress and Monument With Initials"SL" French Mid-Nineteenth Century Mourning Hair Art. Sentimental Art, Memento Mori, Antique 5 1/2" high. 5 3/8" wide Scene made from human hair on a background painted in lovely blue and pink tones is under domed glass with a goldtone edge and dark stained wooden frame. A monument with the initials"SL" sits between a willow made from blonde hair and a cypress made from brown hair. Some hair has come undone and floats in the frame but does not effect the lovliness of the image. There is some dust inside the domed glass and I would imagine it could be cleaned but I would not personally be willing to disrupt the paper on the back. Frame has a few nicks but is otherwise in amazing condition given its age. Please pardon the reflections from my lights.photos ... moreare otherwise very good depictions of how the piece looks in person. Though colors may be a bit more vivid. Large Antique French Sentimental Mourning Memento Hair Art, Bombe Glass Frame
Description A superb and large antique French Napoleon III era sentimental hair artwork mourning memento or remembrance piece. Composed of hair from a loved one. Expertly worked into flowers, leaves and feathers set among thick curls, all entirely worked from hair in shades of brunette and blonde atop a glass panel. The motif is raised, giving a 3D effect, and stunning in its composition and craftsmanship. Housed in an ebonized wooden frame and encased beneath a deep domed bombe glass. In overall good antique condition showing general wear, there are loose/out of place hairs as shown. To the reverse is an old paper backing and a brass loop ring for hanging display. A large piece, the oval frame measures 10 3/4" height x 8 7/8" width. The tradition of keeping locks of a loved one’s hair might seem a bit of a macabre curiosity, but ... morethis novelty was actually quite popular and precious at a time when photography was costly. Specialized shops devoted to this art medium throughout Europe, and France, grand fabriques d’ouvrages en cheveux where artistes-dessinateurs spent countless hours expertly working hair commissioned into flowers, curls, ribbons, as is the case here. Others showcase hair worked into sceneries to memorialize, or express devotion and love. Artists were also quite skilled in taking a lock of hair to be woven as jewelry adornments, perhaps the most popular form of Victorian mourning jewelry. Welcome to the Antique Boutique. Some think them too tender and sentimental and lovely. We find them interesting. Hauntingly beautiful in their way, and mostly poignant in the way they must have held the love of a parent, child, lover. These framed works of hair art(yes, it's completely worked in human hair) were not always mourning pieces. They were made and kept as souvenir of a connection. ... moreThere are those that are made of hair from an entire living family; others from hair of a young lover made to be a token of engagement or love. There are those that include the long locks of a little boy child whose hair was not typically cut until he was about 5 and often the mother had one of these made with the whole ponytail he left behind when he went from being his Momma's baby to being his Father's son. Another way of speaking of that transition was to say"he's in his britches" because it was also this time when a male child stopped wearing the opportunistic dress of a baby and began wearing knicker-like longer pants. We've had these made with the long single braid cut when a young woman entered the convent or became a nun. There are many reasons they were popular in their time. Not the least of those was that people did not have or access photography, and most could not afford to have a painting in miniature done of their loved one. Some sketches, perhaps. Most just kept a lock of hair. This is one of a collection of these I'm listing today. The one you see is elaborate, very lovely. A feathered sprig of delicate leaves encircle the monogram
