Beautiful Kiln Fired French Enamel Opera Glasses
These are a beautiful pair of La Duchesse opera glasses. Made in Paris France, circa 1900. The brass has a beautiful aged patina, and the body is a gorgeous kiln fired enamel, with a lovely pink background, with flowers and Dragon Flies. The eye pieces are crowned in Mother of Pearl, with the La Duchesse, Paris mark on each one. The glass has no cracks and the optics are great, The lenses raise by the Mother of Pearl wheel in the center. Many of these opera glasses come without a handle, but these have a lovely handle, which folds flat against the glasses when not in use, and rotates out for the lady to use to lift them to her eyes. There is one small dent in the brass around one glass on the bottom, but other than that small dent, these opera glasses are in great shape for their age, and have been lovingly taken care of. They are 4" ... moreacross the bottom and 3" across the top. They are 2" tall, when the lenses are closed down, and 3" when they are opened up. They are simply a thing of beauty. Paris, and once in a while we get one that even bears the signature on the lock plate, though this one doesn't show that. But a bit of history: The company, TAHAN, is primarily known as a master cabinetry and box maker, and the TAHAN name can add immeasurably to the value and collector's interest in any given antiques French marquetry ... morebox. We see it all the time in Paris, though many non-French collectors also know the significance of the TAHAN name. It ranks with names like Tiffany here, or Cartier, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Odiot and Puiforcat for prestige and quality goods. It is always a pleasure to offer up superb pieces that represent the goods from this noted 19th century maker and purveyor of luxury goods, never more so than with the old kiln-fired enamel items such as this beauty we have listed here. A stunningly large example, and one free of the typical hairlines and chips, cracks that so often plague the thick glassine layer of melted enamels on convex copper plaques, often mistaken for fine old porcelains. And rightfully so, as this style is that of the Sevres enamelists, and is likely created for TAHAN by the Sevres enamel industry, active in the 19th century. Clear clean undamaged inside and out. A splendid find, and one you'll not want to miss. Image Hosting by Ruby Lane Return Policy: We always honor a 3-day return on our items. And guarantee them to be as described. Pristine little antique French kiln-fired enamel jewelry casket. Mid-1800s, Likely made for TAHAN, which is a name synonymous with luxury goods in Paris, 19th century, though this one does not have an engraved signature like some do. Most agree that these enamels were done by enamelists in Sevres, France, for TAHAN. It's true that Sevres enamels have this look- a bit of a cross between Bresson enamels with raised jewel-like dots, and Limoges enamels. ... moreThis process, which I've written about many times, is one only accomplished with the skill of years and years of practice. The enamel powders are various shades of muddy mauve, taupe, blues, not the least resembling the color they will become once the kiln melts them into the glassine or porcelain like finished product you see here. So an artist is layering on stroke after stroke, working quite literally blind as far as the colors and spacing of the finished outcome he/she hopes to achieve. It is the memory that guides the hand in this art. And subject to such whims of nature and memory, it's always amazing to me that they come out with anything but a glob. I've tried this art, myself, and believe me, it's very difficult. I mostly get globs. The nature of the process is part of the reason why these old kiln-fired objects have such a following and bring the prices they continue to bring. Antique Kiln-Fired French Enamel Jewelry Casket, Box, Etui, Romantic Figures

We'll be sending out sale notices and special deals to our'Favorites' customers. I would have thought this fine old kiln-fired enamel box was English. Perhaps Bilston, but in fact it is French in origin and is a larger size bonboniere or bonbon box. A white enamel ground trimmed out in navy blue, with floral bouquets surrounding the bulbous bottom half and a charming pair of lovers depicted up top on the lid. Some roughness of age showing on the bottom rim, where it's rubbed surfaces over time, but no chips or cracks or other ... moreflaws to note on this fine pot-like box. Nicely fitted, the top fits perfectly and closes snug and tight, yet is easily opened. I've written time and again about how difficult this process is. One'paints' on the enamel powders which are suspended in a liquid medium that aids in application, but all of the colors are muddy mauve, grey, taupe and blues and nothing at all like the colors that emerge once the kiln has melted the enamel powders into the thick glassine finish that some mistake for porcelain. The work is done on a metal plaque, or in this case, a copper or brass forming the bottom and the top of this box. The artist is apprenticed for years and years before he/she is adept enough at this arduous and painstaking process to eventuate a finished product like the one we have here. Quite unique, different from many of the enameled boxes we've had over time, and all the more wonderful for its differences. A fine tiny patch box- an example of the reason these fabulous 19th century French enamel boxes are so sought after. This one is a bit unique in the navy or cobalt blue color. These are usually referred to as Tahan, though only a few have the signature TAHAN Paris on the inner lock plate. They were, if you ask the French experts, kiln-fired enamels made by enamelists of Sevres, France, for the ... moreluxury goods maker/seller, TAHAN, Paris(one of the finest purveyors, on par with Tiffany here in the USA for 19th century quality, luxury) The enamel industry from Sevres is not the RMS or Royal Manufactory de Sevres you think of for porcelains, though the skill and talent as decorators working in slip or enamel crosses over between the two industries, therefore making it a simple art to reside among these artisans, after all. This box is not signed, but it is definitely of the finest quality enamel work, and consistent with those others we have and have had that were signed TAHAN, Paris. This process, which I've written about many times, is one only accomplished with the skill of years and years of practice. The enamel powders are various shades of muddy mauve, taupe, blues, not the least resembling the color they will become once the kiln melts them into the glassine or porcelain like finished product you see here. This listing is for a very pretty. Sculpted, Kiln Fired Enamel box, Possibly Limoges? Most of these I have seen are smooth, top and bottom. This one is formed, sculpted on the top, as well as the sides. It is Black in color, and has a Hand Painted Enamel Foiled Portrait of a Lady with Big, Feathered Hat in the center. The portrait is in the center of a raised 5 Point Star, or Pentagram. The box has raised white enamel detailing. Also gilt, but some is worn off. I see a couple of small spots where the enamel is chipped, high spots on the bottom of box, just below the lifter. SEE PICTURE 13) These are not that noticeable, and could be touched up easily. There is slight wear in spots on the bottom of the box, consistent with age and use. IT MEASURES ABOUT 2" ACROSS BY 1 1/4" HIGH. It snaps shut like it should. The hinge is fine, no damage or repair.
