Rare European Iron Age bronze sword - Villanovan -750 B.C.
A very rare European Early Iron Age bronze sword. Dating to around 750 B.C. and from the Villanova culture. A very rare. Finely made piece, with narrow, pointed blade, decorated with thick ridges along its length, splaying outwards at the hilt. The hilt is perforated five times, with four of the original bolts still attached, these would have been used to secure a wooden handle in antiquity, slotting into the recessed hilt. The"shadow" of the grip(with C-shaped join) can still be seen, owing to differential oxidation of the bronze. The Villanova culture was a pre-Etruscan civilization centered around the Po valley in modern-day North Italy. They were the first Italic people to gain knowledge of Iron working. And presumably spread this practice throughout the Italian peninsula. This bronze weapon was likely produced as a ceremonial ... morepiece, or may have been an early weapon before the widespread adoption of Iron. Length: 13 5/8 inches. Condition: Exceptional condition. DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT BELIEVE IT'S VERY OLD! LARGE VASE OR POT ARCHAIC URN VESSEL RITUAL BURIAL POT VASE BRONZE COPPER BRASS BUDDHA INDIAN? Smiling woman with long braided hair holding up her dress or gown. Possibly to show the colorful beauty or maybe she's curtseying, just don't know. I looked online for what this might be and I have no clue-can't find it anywhere. The old ladies home this came out of was said to have picked this up many years ago from a local Odd Fellows Rebeka's Hall. If that's accurate and it was used in the rituals or somehow was part of this order. That could put it any time after mid 1800's, though I think it could be older. I have no reason to believe that this is some kind of reproduction. I think it's bronze, a magnet does not stick to it and when you knock on it, it sounds ... morelike metal. It looks like pottery or cement, but doesn't sound like it and the walls are not thin, but not thick enough too be as sturdy as it is if it was made of pottery. I just know what material it is for sure. If it was pottery of some type, you would think it would have chipped by now and there are no chips. The patina that appears is rough, green& brown and resembles a growth like rust. When you look down inside, you can see a layer of something along the bottom, maybe just dirt or some kind of residue build-up and this build-up material is cracked in 2 places long ways across but the cracks are not in the bottom of the vessel. While searching the internet, I found these words that had some image or something associated with elements that slightly resembled parts of this item: Tibet. KWAN YIN. DUNHUANG FAIRY, HAN DYNASTY, CHINESE ART, MING, Gautama Buddha. Shakyamuni. SIDDHARTHA. Avalokitesvara. Boddhisatva. Wine Pot? Measures 20 inches high. 17 inches across widest part(her mid section) around 7 inches inside pot at widest point front to back and the mouth inside diameter is 3 inches. An early medieval Anglo-Saxon gilt bronze square-headed brooch. Dating to the early 6th century AD. Dazzling in its skill. Inventiveness and exuberance, this square-headed brooch is a rare and beautiful example of the complexity of early Anglo-Saxon art. On the rectangular head-plate an intricate border of scrolls derived from late Roman metalwork runs around the top and sides. The inner panel is a convoluted mix of gripping limbs and animal face masks. Below the head-plate, the curving bow leads the eye down to the ghostly human face which lies at the centre, flanked by two birds, their heads bowed and beaks curving gracefully inwards. The foot-plate is in the form of a highly stylised horse's head, reduced to the essence of form, with two serpent like figures flanking the sides of the muzzle. The rich mixture of animal and human images ... morethroughout the piece is a joyful enigma. A puzzle for the viewer to deconstruct, this love of riddles shapes both Anglo-Saxon art and literature.
