Antique Hand Fan, Framed, From Late 1800s, French
The is a beautiful old fan with the signs of age(some cracks on the folds. One stick had been broken and the right guard had been broken and glued) the best way to display this lovely fan was to frame it. It has three cartouches, surrounded by sequins and spangles. The paintings were done in gouache and the overall fan was of a netting. It has a twisted brass loop. This fan dates from the 1850- 1890. It measures 15-3/4" in width times 8-3/4" in height. The goldtoned frame is 19-1/2" wide and 11-3/4" high. As I noted with my other fan. I can take the back off from the frame and wrap the fan carefully so that there's no damage in the mailing. All you'd have to do is put the back onto the frame. This is up to you but I recommend this- I wouldn't want the fan to be damaged. Magnificent Hand Painted and gilded Paper Fan, c. 1850, French
For your consideration a marvelous antique fan. Made in France and dating to about 1850, as the Victorian era was approaching its height of style. Sixteen(16) ebonized wood ribs are hand painted with roses and flowers and heavily gilded with flourish details. Mounted to them is an elaborate pleated paper which is again. All hand painted and gilded. There are three reserves on the front and one on the back which are watercolor depictions, in incredible detail, of young girls and young men in various activities, reading, studying, socializing, picking fruit, etc. On the top of the right hand rib is mounted a small mirror, for checking one's makeup, or perhaps watching the activity behind.the mirror has a small crack. Other than that. This is in really great antique condition. Found in the box with it was a little note. Which we will send ... morealong, and which we have pictured. Offered for Auction Antique French Art Nouveau FAN This is an E xquisite hand painted and signed. Silk hand fan from France. The maiden is perched on stylized peacock feather clouds. The sticks are carved, gilt, and enameled mother of pearl with blossoms motif. The length of MOP spine is 9.75” C ondition– This fan is in very good condition. Especially for its age. The backing mesh is coming off in between the spines. And, at the top middle of the fan, at one crease, there is a ¾” slit. The mother of pearl is perfect. The painting is lovely. THIS WAS BROUGHT IN ON CONSIGNMENT. THE GENTLEMAN SAID IT WAS 18th CENTURY HAND FANS. FROM FRANCE WE WERE TOLD BY AN ANTIQUE DEALER. LATE 1700's, MADE OF HAND PAINTED SILK, THE BIRDS HAVE REAL FEATHERS, ONE OF THE BIRDS IS MISSING A BEAK. THE SILK HAS SOME SMALL MOTH HOLES IN IT ON EACH FAN. THE RIC RAC IS LOSE AND NEEDS SEWN, THE GILDING IS WORN OFF MOST OF THE WOOD HANDLES. THE DEALER SAID THEY WERE STILL MUSEUM QUALITY. Fan is painted on both sides with front having a landscape view with figural and architectural elements and back with a separate landscape view. I believe this fan to be post 1900 and French in origin but you be the judge. I measures approximately 8" in height and 14" in width as unfolded in the main picture. FRENCH HAND PAINTED VERNIS MARTIN FAN/EVENTAIL RARE C. 1840
This is a French brise Vernis Martin fan. The subject of the painting is quite rare for a Vernis Martin fan. The front of the fan is like a small masterpiece painting, it's so finely painted with such great detail on the faces and figures, depicting the Birth of Venus, Goddess of Love according to Greco-Roman Mythology. At the center of the painting Venus is rising from the sea seated on a scallop shell which appears to be being pulled by a sea creature. Perhaps a dolphin, one of her symbols. There are nine putti, including Cupid and Psyche gathered to witness Venus' arrival. Most of the figures are gazing at her and Triton, the messenger of the sea is blowing into a twisted conch shell, to signal her arrival. The lower gorge is also finely painted with medallions featuring a basket of flowers in the middle. The back of the fan depicts ... morea simple landscape with a more detailed painting on the gorge with three floral cartouches. I have dated this fan as C.1840 however it could be earlier. There are tortoise thumb guards on each side and a sparkling faceted clear stone on each side as well. The silk connecting ribbon was professionally replaced approximately 10 years. Overall condition is superb for an item of this age. Fan is 8" X 13 1/2" There have been many paintings depicting The Birth of Venus. One of the earliest is the work of Sandro Botticelli C. 1486 on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Italy. Another fabulous later work by William-Adolphe Bouguereau C.1874 is on display at The Musee d'Orsay in Paris. I was fortunate to have viewed this piece recently, it is quite large, just under 10' tall and absolutely beautiful. Please email me with any questions you may have. Up for auction we have a beautiful French hand painted fan framed in a shadow box. The bone staves show signs of gold gilt and the fan itself has sequins through out. It looks to be a scene where a couple is walking through the woods together. It is hard to make out but is signed Pouteret. The fan is very detailed. Antique French fan hand-painted, signed, silk, sequins, carving, gold paint
For your consideration is an absolutely precious antique Victorian or Georgian era(pre-1900s) hand-painted silk fan with carved spines. The fan contains swirly embellishments as well as three young couples at a dance. The artwork is signed either"Byon" or Bijon. probably the latter. The silk has gold paint accents and has French silver-colored metal micro-sequins sewn onto it. I can see no loose sequins and no missing sequins. The threads attaching the sequins are intact. The spines are hand-carved and hand painted with gold color. The spines are also imbedded with tiny metal sivertone discs. The fan opens and closes sharply. The join at the bottom of the spines is in fine shape and includes two mother of pearl beads. Overall the fan is in great shape considering its delicacy. There are tears in the fine gauzy silk. Primarily in ... morethe back layer, but also a bit in the front vertically along the folds at the bottom. I have sewn four small stitches with silk thread to remedy the spots that bothered me. see photos) The spines are a little dirty in spots. No spines are loose, missing or broken. Antique French Sequined Silk & Blonde Horn Hand Fan, Circa 1890s
This is an adorable little fan with a small tear on the upper right next to the guard. Needs to be re-glued to the guard. The sticks and guards are inlaid with cloute. With a floral design. The left guardstick has some rough edges that might have been a break in the past that had been repaired- it's very hard to see. The leaf has gold colored sequins and spangles. It measures 9-1/2" long. The fan used to be displayed in a frame as the horn sticks have bent(see last photo) It can still be opened easily, but it can be reframed. Sorry about the shadow covering the left half of the fan- it is all one color- no fading or anything.
