The memento here shown is entirely worked in human hair(within the frame) and it is one of the larger of these we ever find. The oval frame is 9.5" x 8.15" and with the deep bomb glass. It's approximately 1.5" deep. I'm assuming this is a young woman's locks, though it is true that a boy's hair was grown long until the age of 5, at which time ... morehis hair was cut short and he began to wear'britches' or pants and was now his father's son rather than his mama's baby, and we have seen hair ornaments done with notation that they are the hair of the son at age 5, upon his transition to being a big boy. Whether girl or boy, this certainly represents a full cut of long hair. No gray at all in that light chestnut braid, so we know it's a young person or child's hair. The other possibility is that it is the shorn hair of a young daughter who enters a convent as novitiate and has her long beautiful hair cut short. That is another way these mementos have meaning. There is another lock of hair that may be that of the mother, as it's darker and has some gray- see our images. These are a bit macabre, some would say, but remember that in a time when few could afford photographer, the lock of hair kept might well represent the only remaining aspect of a person's life, apart from memories. And these became precious as well as fashionable in their time. Blonde Weeping Willow. Brunette Cypress and Monument With Initials"SL" French Mid-Nineteenth Century Mourning Hair Art. Sentimental Art, Memento Mori, Antique 5 1/2" high. 5 3/8" wide Scene made from human hair on a background painted in lovely blue and pink tones is under domed glass with a goldtone edge and dark stained wooden frame. A monument with the initials"SL" sits between a willow made from blonde hair and a cypress made from brown hair. Some hair has come undone and floats in the frame but does not effect the lovliness of the image. There is some dust inside the domed glass and I would imagine it could be cleaned but I would not personally be willing to disrupt the paper on the back. Frame has a few nicks but is otherwise in amazing condition given its age. This is a wonderful very detailed item. The stone bowl is made of Onyx stone. And has a lovely translucent glow under certain lighting condition. The body is composed of stylized bronze floral in the Nouveau Style. Note the fine work on the enamel detail. It is a rare and beautiful item. That is nowadays very difficult to come across. Hand carved wood and tin. The sides are carved with flowers and birds. Each side has words in French. NOS PINSONS and CHANTEURS. Translates to: Our Singing Finches or Our Finches Singers. It has a handle(brass ornate) on the top with vertical wires in the front. It is footed and stands 13" tall and is 10.5" wide by 8.25 deep at the top. Art Nouveau gilt and cut crystal double inkwell with pen holder. French. 19th century. Measures 5 3/4inches accross. 3 1/2inches front to back. Finest French cut crystal with gilt metal mounts. This piece has to be examined from every angle and side to appreciate the tremendous workmanship. the shape is oval with a round front. Underneath is beautifully. Beautifully cut crystal. Top corner of glass is canted. Around the front is a border of gold acorns and oak leaves. At the back this extends all the way up the side and turns over to the top of the crystal in the form of swags, flowers and foliage in exquisite detail. The metal base and top finial's are newer than the urns.I would guess late 1920's-1930's(urns are 19th century) They are not electrified currently but should be able to do so, if desired. All the metal pieces have been painted to match the deep raspberry porcelain ground. The paint on the metal is chippy but color is decent. Even though they have been reinvented they are quite striking as is and lovely to look at. She is 11 1/2" by 7 1/4" and weighs 3 1/2 pounds. It has a 1" by 1/4" wear spot to the bronze finish. Salambo is 12" by 7 1/4" and also artist signed. She has a 1/2" stress line on her left shoulder. Beautiful paper-covered French chocolate box This gorgeous little thing comes to you from the Jazz Age. Beautifully preserved and showing a pretty young mademoiselle and her roses. The paper is wrapped around and glued to the cardboard. And considering its age and fragility it really is in good condition. The top left corner shows some wear. And also at the top right edge there is a pinpoint of the paper surface missing. The bottom of the box is edged in gold and the original brown tissue paper is inside. It's clean inside too. For sale is this rare and simply exquisite piece of Victorian Beadwork Art. It is such an item of unique beauty that I was so tempted to keep it. Still am. But I love beautiful art and do have enough. Can you imagine how many hours it took to create? And such a creative mind. The item is three dimensional as shown. It was created on a metal frame. Colors are lovely shades of white, grey and yellow. An ebayer just informed me that it is a French mourning wreath. This delicate item is a true survivor, but it does have a few issues. There are beads missing in one area as shown. One of the petals is dangling and needs a little wire repair. However, this really does not detract form its overall beauty and even adds a bit of history with its little imperfections. As you can tell, I find this unique, exquisite and outstanding.
