Chinese Export Armoire/Cabinet, Black Lacquer & Mother of Pearl Chinoiserie
Please excuse the odd glare in some of the photos. The armoire is too large to sit anywhere but our double garage, and the lacquer is so shiny that you can see our vehicle and some of the lawn in the relection. It is actually a deep, glossy black, with absolutely no fading. This is one of the most stunning pieces I've ever had the pleasure to offer. It does have a few flaws. However. Worst being that someone attempted to convert it to an entertainment center, cutting a small square hole in the middle closet for the TV electrical, and when they slid their heavy TV into this space, they created some scuffs on the cinnabar colored shelf, which they then dabbed with a non-matching color! Other than that, there is one small piecer of black lacquer chipped off the bottom corner of one of the doors, about 1/2" in diameter, and thought the ... moreblack lacquer really does glow, there are a couple of faint cracks in it, beneath the lacquer-you have to really look carefully for these marks, but of course, you need to know about them. They do not affect the looks of this gorgeous piece. I can find no missing mother of pearl and abalone shell. The all-over design is cranes, wild birds, temples, trees, and even the moon or sun has a subtle yin-yang wave in its shell. I think the wood is cedar. As it is lightweight and has a very pleasant smell, but I don't know. The entire piece is actually five parts that join together. There is a top that extends the entire length of the three individual cabinets, and a matching bottom that they sit on. Then there are three cabinets, with the middle one having two doors that are closed with the beautiful round knob shown in the first picture. This knob has been re-glued around it's back seam. Each of the cabinets has slide out drawers on the bottom, and the two end cabinets each have rods and hooks for hanging clothes. 1950s atomic armoire with drawers. Hanging rod and locking cabinet doors- RARE and FUNCTIONAL This vintage piece from the 1950s atomic era is a virtually one-of-a-kind show stopper. Whether you call it an armoire, sideboard, wardrobe, cabinet, cupboard, credenza, or liquor cabinet, this amazing looking slice of history can serve a variety of functions. The main portion of the unit has 3 light wood-tone lacquered cabinet doors; the 2 outer doors are solid and the center door has an atomic glass inset. All 3 doors have a separate lock and key which are fully functioning. All cabinet doors are on original hinges. The left hand cabinet is designed for shelving and has multiple shelf supports. A portion of the shelf support is not original to the piece but adds functionality and sturdiness. There is a slender dark lacquered wood-toned side piece ... moreon the right side of the cabinet opening that also opens if needed. The latching mechanism on this portion is not functional at this time as the bottom latch is missing and the top latch is positioned too low. The right cabinet is a mirror image of the left hand cabinet with the following exceptions; there is an original brass hanging rod, and the latches on the dark-toned side piece are fully functioning. This door opens a little tight, as the angles of the unit have slightly shifted with age. The middle cabinet, featuring atomic glass inset door, is designed for glass display shelves. The unit does not come with the shelves but the original shelf supports are in place. The backdrop of this cabinet is a white vinyl material with decorated buttons/snaps. There is slight yellowing with age. The bottom portion of the unit has dark-toned lacquered sliding doors and behind these doors, under the left and right cabinets are open cubby areas for storage.
