Residents of the San Francisco area at the time of their death, who make their wealth in the shoe business in the early 1900's. An appraisal is available upon request(dated September 4, 1975) from a Sr. Member American Society of Appraisers, Geo. E. Bensley, ASA, and reads as follows: The pair of Louis XV Style Marble Top Commodes made of Walnut, have scalloped top w/serpentine front. Up for auction are a pair of beautiful night stands. Commodes, from the turn of the 19th to 20th century with inlaid wood, bronze mounted, with marble tops. These are very unique pieces with much character. These are 29.25" tall, 21.25" wide, and 13.25" deep. Each night stand has 2 drawers, and each drawer has two(2) bronze pulls. The marble tops are perfect. The bronze mounts are extremely detailed and run the ENTIRE perimeter of each night stand and 3 corners of each leg. The wood inlay is very detailed. There are a few blemishes and I will describe them. There are small vertical splits in the inlay seam in all four sides. There are several places with a piece of the inlay has been chipped away- the biggest(1/2 x 1/2) is at the top where the night stand ends and the marble begins. It is not noticeable because the marble hides ... moreit. None of these blemishes are overtly noticeable but upon close inspection one will see them. They are a beautiful pair in Italian walnut. They are in the French Victorian style with the heavy cast brass hardware. The drawers are 9 inches deep! The drawers have heavy cast brass handles on the fronts. They most likely were in a dining room set in its day because the top drawer on one is divided and felt lined for silverware and the top drawer on the other chest is felt lined. The drawers are dove tail and you can tell by the construction that they are likely 1950s to 1960s. They have a great look in the medium walnut color. STUNNING VINTAGE LOUIS XV MARQUETRY COMMODES OR NIGHTSTANDS MARBLE TOP WITH BRASS A stunning pair of vintage early 20th century marble top with a decorative brass design around the edge. Natural patina on the brass has occurred due to the age of these commodes/nightstands. French Louis XV style marquetry commodes or nightstands are embellished with pierced brass gallery borders and ormolu mounts and paneled marquetry. The commodes are a pleasing shape with spacious tops. One nightstand opens in cabinet style while the other has 3 small but ample drawers for storage. They are circa early 20th century and are considered to be in good condition. Note each of the pictures we've taken. The marble tops have been recently buffed by a professional company. They are clean and free of any dirt. Scratches or stains. These are the original marble ... moretops and have not ever been replaced. Note that each drawer is dove tail joined. One of the legs looks as though it was hit with something which we've taken the liberty to photograph. There is also a small hole in the very back of one of these. Perhaps it was for an alarm clock?
