Antique Victorian Paper Hand Fan with Leather and Silk Duvelleroy Box
Beautiful paper fan with vivid. Beautiful colors with golden edges and accents. There is a small crack in the fan on one end which had been hand mended with a threaded stitch. The fan is not marked, however, it came with a fan box marked Duvelleroy 17 Passage Panoramas 35 Boul Des Capucines. Box is maroon leather on the outside and maroon silk lined. Box is 11 1/2 inches long and weighs 5 ounces. I will pay standard shipping charges. Outside of box is marked F.A.S. 1895. The box may very well be worth more than the fan, though the fan is lovely. Duvelleroy was at this location in 1895, so I think the engraving is accurate. As with all antiques, there is some natural wear which I tried to show in the pictures. Thank you for looking!

You are bidding on: A Very Large& Framed Antique Late Victorian Off White Silk Fan This very large fan is made of fine silk and has gold or golden discs carefully sewn across its surfaces to illustrate leaves and delicate floral sprays. The ox bone sticks are intricately carved and pierced. All are joined at bottom by a Mother of Pearl button. None of the sticks have any damage. Handsomely displayed in an antiqued gold gilt shadow box lined with sage-colored velvet or velveteen. I've noticed a few very small holes or breaks in the silk.but they are very small and very few. This is circa 1890s and titled"The Dawn of Summer" and"A Summer's Night" The ladies are in fancy gowns and there is much lace and flowers! Each has hand painted accents. I am not sure how much of these are hand painted as there does look like brush marks in quite a few spots and the works look like watercolors- please look at the close ups- this is not my area of expertise. These are mounted to an old matt like board. I took this out of a very old gold gesso frame that had cracked glass and broken gesso all over. The whole mount is app. 18.5”x10” The mount is worthless due to the staining and wear as shown. The lithos are in very good condition with no damage as they have been protected by the glass frame. Elaborate scrolls, flowers, garlands are painted in blue and charcoal gray. A couple in colorful dress are on 1 side and another scene of people on paper that doesn't open. The opposite side shows 2 ladies and a man dancing accompanied by a man playing an unusual wind instrument. They are in a landscape setting. A matched pair of Georgian or early Victorian era fans with embroidery and beadwork. The green. Brown, gold, salmon colored embroidery was mounted on stiff cardboard and the back covered with cream colored taffeta. A border follows the scallop shape in gold, red, taupe colors. Gold, brown and clear beaded added sparkle to the fans in their heyday. The fabric portion of each fan measures 15" x 7" The turned wood handles have beautiful detail and measure 7 1/4" in length. Since cosmetics of this era contained wax. These types of fan were used as protection from the heat of the fireplace. These are in good condition, particularly considering the fragility of the materials and their great age. Needlework, Bracket Handle Description: ANTIQUE VICTORIAN FIREPLACE FACE SCREEN Striking antique Victorian fireplace heat screen measuring about 13" tall- actual screen is about 8" round not including the fringe and 13" round with the fringe included in the measurement. Completely hand beaded in a beautiful trailing floral design which rings the border. Beads are both opaque and clear glass, highlighted in metallic or steel cut beads. Background is deep, rich, blue velvet with matching fringe, and a sturdy fabric covers the back. This type of screen hails from an era when homes were without central heat, depending on a fireplace in each room to keep the occupants warm. Since a woman's makeup at that time was wax based, these screens or fans were designed to protect a ... morewoman's complexion and"color" from melting while she was seated by the heat. Many screens were designed to stand independently in front of a fireplace, while others were mounted on handles or frames- similar to a hand held fan, such as this one. Condition is very nice with one line of loose clear glass beads on one flower petal- the centers of the four flowers were once accented with faux pearls- unfortunately. Only two remain as shown- think replacement pearls could be added if desired although it displays beautifully in the current condition. There is a bit of wear within the center of the fan- just nap loss to the velvet from usage- the handle is a lovely and delicate carved design with original gilding- appears to be paper mache or some similar, extremely light wood- the very finial tip is no longer present, but the loss is dark with age and is not noticeable. Made by sewing a beaded front and material back to a sturdy metal ring, I've show a photo of the ring top which has pulled apart- one end should seat neatly into the other- I'm afraid to force to two sections together- does not impact function or show from the front and is hidden by the fringe.
