This piece has a door and lips for glass which is not present. One could have glass panels cut for a few dollars and this will make a fine statement piece. It's stunning. One may wish to paint to brighten up a bit or change color entirely but it displays beautifully with its shabby features. This lovely piece has a door that opens for exchanging bulbs. This stunning frame is solid wood which is carved in a French or Italian, acanthus scroll design. The carvings are beautifully executed and are open. The frame is in 4 distinct sections that have been joined together to complete the piece. The wood has a gold gilded finish which is not too shiny or too gold but has a more of a golden bronze color. The narrow interior section is an antique white painted finish. The frame retains the original wire hangers and the hanging wire. There is no glass. Vintage French style Louis XVI old Gilt ornate picture frame Antique 1800's
This is an old antique frame from a Maine estate. Frame measures outside 18" X 22" Picture space 12 1/4" X 16 1/4" Lips are 5/16" I believe this frame is all wood because there is not any flaws or cracked gesso. If it is gesso moldings they are in excellent condition. There are a few drips of what seems to be white paint probably picked up from wall painting where it was hanging. Can see an old auction lot number on corner back. Old style I'm guessing at least 19th century maybe older. Old gilt has a brownish fade. Two of the corners have a visable nail hole. There are lots of delicious scrolling shapes. Typical of the French Rococo or Rocaille style. There is no glass in the frame and on the rear it is a piece of thick card that backs the frame. It works perfectly well but I do not imagine it is original. There is some rubbing back of the gilding to show the bronze underneath. And is in black and white medium of pen and ink. Back of frame has a thin Balsa-like wood. The print has discoloration and considerable aging. But paper is intact. The bronze has been very deeply sculpted with great detail. There are lion’s heads along the sides and intricate design work all around. Leg stand rotates. The piece at the back unscrews to insert a photo. One of the screws appears to be stuck but would be easy to replace or repair. At the center of the crown. For your consideration is an original French Depose Frame from Paris ornately decorated with ribbon. Cross bow torches and leaves. The frame has substantial weight and I am guessing its either cast iron or brass. The glass is not original, has little chips in the corners(not visible though) and slides a bit but it will suffice if you chose not to replace the glass. The back of the frame attests to its old age. The metal is well worn however glimpses of brass still peek through. So it is safe to say the cabinet back IS brass.
