Here's a very unique antique papier mache writing slope. Ecritoire or lap desk, rich gold enamel accenting around the edges and a large circular medallion in the lid! In the style of the old Grand Tour works, some with eglomise or reverse painted glass panels depicting world famous architectural wonders and souvenirs for the Grand Tour travelers. This one without an insert, though it has the appearance of one. The entire lid panel is solid, formed with the raised circular border and convex center panel AND beautifully hand painted with a garden theme! A variety of plants& flowers, all beautifully detailed, with an egg-filled nest to boot! Definitely a Springtime scene, full of new growth and new life! The painting is a bit yellow in appearance, a result of the clearcoat protectant that the ebeniste put over the original oil painting for preservation. A glorious piece, complete and original inside& out. The fitted spaces inside include two spaces for inkwells(not there- relatively easy to replace, however) and a gold accented convex pen tray, removable for implements or stamps storage beneath. The upper half of the writing surface also folds up to a stationery compartment below. What a beauty! Very good condition. With a nod to the age and usually fragile nature of papier mache. In remarkable condition really. The surface has a lustrous jet black finish, hardly a sign of crackling or crazing and only the tiniest nip or two. Fine example of 19th century lacquered papier mache. This wall hanging letter box or holder is from England. There is an old label on the back from an English shop. There is a charming scene on the front portion that has a group of people examining a very large ornate urn. The top and both sides are also decorated. This box is about 7 3/4" wide and about 8 1/4" tall. The sides taper out from 1/2" to almost 2" The surface decorations are in good condition with some losses. But not enough to ruin them. There is a chip on the back at the top with a small part of the very top broken off. Also some of the left side has some broken off. Superb antique gilt and hand-painted papier-mache tray Cherries and flowers 19c
Description: Superb antique papier-mache paper-mache tray with a lush gilt background. On which is painted cherries and flowers. The background gilding is actual hand-applied gold gilding that has been varnished before painting(it's applied in squares, the outlines of which are still visible) Has some damage commensurate with the materials, age and use: a scratch at the top(doesn't go through the painted cherries/flowers) a break along the border, some peeling of the black lacquer underside, spots of wear on the surface and along a part of the edge(see pix) All could be repaired fairly easily, but it actually displays quite nicely as is. Unsure of exact age and origin; I originally thought it might be old European papier-mache, but now think it's possibly nineteenth-century, of the Aesthetic era(I have a painted faux-lacquer box ... morefrom that era that has the materials and the same peeling on the underside) Most of my items are vintage or antique and may have normal wear commensurate with age. I am not experienced with this type of item but believe it was made in England in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The bowl is hand painted with a bluebird. Butterfly and pink blossoms. This piece measures 2" high, 15" long and 9 3/4" across. It is in very good estate condition. There are some surface cracks in the center and wear on the handles. These flaws are not excessive in my mind but please check the enlarged photos to evaluate. This papier mache bowl should be a welcome addition to any collection! Lovely PAPIER MACHE BOWL w/Large Bird Decoration - FRENCH -ITALIAN - 19TH CENT
I do not know the history of this papier mache bowl but I do know it is very old. This piece is painted in green and red with a huge dark green bird in the middle with darker green accented black on its wing. The bird is sitting between two large green sculpted trees. There is a green stripe close to the top that is decorated with a yellow design and a yellow stripe below. The underside of the bowl has a really dark green almost black. Black bird. It is bordered on the sides and bottom with yellow and green flowers with red centers. This underside also has the same green stripe with the yellow pattern. I do not know why but this has a French or Italian feel to me. But you will need to be the judge of that. The bowl is oval and does not sit flat- leans to the front- I imagine it was for a decorative purpose rather than a utilitarian one. On ... morethe outside of the bowl rim there is quite a bit of chipped off layers of papier mache. But only on the rim. Other than that the bowl is beautiful and unique. Victorian Papier Mache Cornucopia-Shaped Letter Holder
Trays. Snuff boxes, sewing boxes, ladies toilet boxes, jewelry boxes, wine coasters, tables and other furniture, and desk accessories, including letter holders; these are some of the everyday items made from papier mache that also were required to be very decorative for Victorian homes. Early on, the use of gold leaf and gold metal was incorporated into their decoration. Young boys learned this skill and were vital employees of the factories producing these items. This piece shows evidence of early gold leafing in its upper edge border. The design used was similar to those found on examples of trays and other objects from the 1840s(see page 90. English Papier Mache of the Georgian and Victorian Periods” The hand-painting on this letter holder is beautifully done. The flowers are clearly drawn and are intensely and beautifully colored. There ... morealso is a peacock with its turquoise blue feathers on gold feathers stationed along the top edge of the frontal piece. The stand is decorated with gold leaf swirls and clouds. The cornucopia shape is delightful and unusual for pieces used to hold stationary. Which usually was within a box, with compartments for letters on a graduated, ramp-like structure. Here one could put their personal cards and letters being held upright off the desk surface so they could easily be found. The front edge is deeply scalloped and gently rolls to a finished mermaid-like tail design. There are some paint losses to the bouquet of flowers. A few nibbles to the papier mache edges and a small bit of papier mache missing where the tail of the peacock should be. Even so, and in spite of these losses, the piece is just charming and exquisite. There is the usual crazing to this 150-year-old object, but it has not damaged any of the paintwork. This is an early Victorian piece. Dating to the 1840s. It is still a beautiful object, deserving a special place in your decorating scheme. The base is 5-1/4” wide and 3-1/8” deep. Vibrant pair of Red Papier Mache Chinoiserie trays. The trays show two different scenes. One showing male and female musicians playing various instruments. The second tray depicts a lady of the house being attended to by various musicians and a lady bearing a tray. As you can see from scrolling over the pictures. The gold has worn off in spots. Antique Papier Mache Crepe Lined Box Box is lined with a deep blue(almost black) material which I believe is crepe. There is excess material which I assume was meant to cover the contents of the box. see photo) Gold colored decoration on top and sides. Age and maker unknown. There are no hinges on the back and box does not remain open unless held. Approx. 13" by 6 3/4" by 3" Weight 1 lb 8 oz. Numerous imperfections ie: scratches. Small chips in lacquer finish. see photos) There is also what may be a glue spill on the top right to the left of the vase. This papier mache is hand painted and adorned with mother-of-pearl decorations. It is approximately 9" long by 6" wide, and is in great condition for its age, there is the typical wear.loss to enamelling& mother-of-pearl, bends/loss at the corners, and some crazing, the back is in excellent condition for its age with only light crazing, the inside has staining but overall it displays wonderfully.
