She is sitting on a throne and wears many jewels. The edges of her robes. Throne and jewelry are illuminated in gold. The ox bone base has been so thinly cut it is transparent. Beautiful antique French miniature painting features a hunting or falconing scene with men on horses with dogs. Frame is 6 1/4" x 5 5/8" and oval painting is 3 3/4" x 3 1/8" Piece is signed on the edge but I can't make it out. In overall very nice condition. Faux ivory hand painted miniature portrait romantic lady signed, NR
Excuse me for my bad English. Here I propose a little hand painted miniature. It’s made on a sort of faux ivory. Celluloid I think. The miniature depicting a young woman orange dressed in a romantic style with a big laced hat. There is a sort of sign but I can’t read it. The painting is protected by a glass but unframed. It measures approx 1 1/2 inch high. I think that this piece can be made in the beginning of the 20th century. I found this lot on an old antique shop closed since 80’s. Large emeralds and diamonds are set in a stunning heavy gold tiara, earrings, necklace and bodice brooch or buckle that accents her Empire waist belt. A pearl drop decorates the neck of her bodice in 3 places, as well. The box is mid-1800s and would likely have been one made for the Grand Tour tourist souvenir trade. Mounted with a halo of prong-set French paste stones to mimic the diamonds of her jewelry and with a serpentine form the box seems almost like fine jewelry, itself. Old green velvet interior lining is complete, intact. The vellum backing remains with the painting and has the notation of Caroline Bonaparte written on it(see images) by the artist, Derval" French fleur de lys decorate the box along with a gadroon borer and rope twist. The body of the necklace measures approx. 15.1/2 inches long when laid flat and the center medallion measures about 2-1/4 inches tall. The painting is done by hand and measures 35x45mm. It is signed"daisy" on the lover left hand corner. The painting is on a natural gained material. Not parchment or printed paper. For your consideration is this spectacular and very rare portrait miniature of Henry Ward Beecher. The portrait is executed in oil on metal and is signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. The case is rolled rose gold and has a domed glass lens. It is very ornate with deeply carved and engraved scrolls of laurel leaves. In the back of the case there is a beveled glass window showing off a lock of Henry's hair. The back is engraved with his name. The miniature is housed in a fitted leather and velvet case that opens with a push button mechanism. This piece is circa 1870. Reverend Henry Ward Beecher was the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe and was a celebrity in his own right. He was an abolitionist. Social reformer and speaker, and a clergyman who wrote many books and went on many speaking campaigns. His colleagues of note included ... moreMark Twain and Abraham Lincoln. Lid is less than perfect with a small open slit where a segment of the side has cracked and been reattached in an antique repair. The blond rim also has a gap caused by natural shrinkage. The lid of the box has an exceptional handpainted miniature portrait of a gentleman. He appears to be middle-aged. Which could be the effect of a high forehead and grey wig, indicating a respectable status and intelligence. Mathieu Deroche: Portrait Miniature Winner Grand Prix 1900 Antiques:Accessories:Decorative Arts The wonderful hand painted portrait miniatures we all love posed a problem. It took a very long time to produce them. If you didn't like the one you commissioned. Well then it wasn't such a simple matter as taking several additional shots to find the one that showed you off to your best advantage. As we can now. Of course, to get from there to here, where we are now in the portrait making department, there was a process with midway points along the way. Mathieu Deroche devised a method, way too complicated for me to describe adequately, but that involved moving a photographic image onto a copper plate and then painting it. The problem with photographs was they were unavailable in color. So a variety of coloring techniques developed. Deroche ... moreplaced photographs on ceramic or copper blanks and then hand painted and fired them; thus creating fine portraits of enduring quality. Derouche's combination of ingenious technique and artistic talent, with flair, resulted in prestige and popularity for the portrait master. He placed his finer pieces in competitions, which frequently won prizes and awards. The portrait here is among his finer work. It won the grand prize at the Exposition International in Paris, 1900. As you can see, after 100 years the portrait maintains its superb vibrant color. Marks: The piece is signed on the front by the artist. On the back, on plaster? it is written the artist's name, the award won and the year it won, the place- Paris- and a number. The meaning of the number is unknown to me. Finally, the entire portrait is framed in a very nice leather frame with Mathieu Deroche's named in gold on the back. The frame can be hung or placed upon a table top. Each piece has a woman portrait painting on 2-3/8" x 2-3/8" porcelain dish mounted on high quality gold gilded and velvet wooden shadow box frame. The frame is 7" x 7" x 2"Thickness. The paintings are unsigned on front. I am not sure whether they have signatures on the back. I can't take them down. From the paintings I believe they were painted by a master painter. Age and origin unknown. I would guess they are either from Germany or France. The porcelain dishes have minor chips or scuffing on the edges showing the age of these pieces. Antique Continental signed miniature portrait, wood frame, 1850-1899
This lovely Continental portrait is of a young lady dressed in a dress and fur cape. The portrait is signed with an illegible signature. The back is covered with a page out of a German bible. The portrait dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. The wood frame is the classic oval with a metal rim. The paining is done on a very thin wafer. Condition is very good; there is some wear to the frame consistent with age. The wafer is protected with glass and the painting is complete. This is a nice addition to a miniature portrait collection. Measurements are: frame 4 3/4: by 4" portrait 2 ½" by 2"
