Small Gutta Percha Box In Ornate Carved Style - Writing Desk Stamp Box??
Nice small box in fairly good condition- see defect descriptions above. Not sure how this was used, maybe on a writing desk to hold stamps or other small items. The lid measures almost 4" square and there is a piece of walnut nailed to bottom of lid. Base of box is 5 1/2" square. Inside diameter is 3" by 3" Depth of inside is about 7/8" deep. British Gutta Percha Pocket Snuff Box w/Masonic Design, Mid 19th c. NR!
LARGE AND ORNATE FRENCH PRESS-MOLDED GUTTA PERCHA POCKET SNUFF BOX WITH AN APPARENTLY SYMBOLIC RELIEF DESIGN OF AN OAK STAFF SPROUTING LEAVES AND ACORNS. A BRAZIER SPOUTING FLAMES, AND WITH AN UNUSUALLY SHAPED RADIANT SILVER CARTOUCHE SET WITHIN A CENTRAL ROSE IN ITS LID, C 1850s. Here we have a handsome large curved pocket snuff box made of mold-pressed gutta percha. British, c 1850s. This ample box is of rectangular form with a gentle curve which allows it to more comfortably rest against the body in one's coat or waistcoat pocket. It measures 3 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide, and 3/4" thick, and excepting its beveled corners is unadorned, excepting the curved top side with its hinged lid, which has a crisp and apparently symbolic decorative scheme in raised relief. In a central, bordered round panel appears an unusual and unengraved ... moresilver cartouche in a radiant, asymetrical form which slightly recalls a scallop shell, within a rose in raised relief. Above this appears a stout oak staff sprouting oak leaves and acorns, and below is a brazier spouting flames which appears to have a cobra rearing up beneath it, flanked by boughs of holly. All of these elements are surrounded by an elaborate textured double border, the outer edge in a woven ribbon design. I am inclined to think these apparently very specific symbols- including the odd form of the cartouche, which I can't put my finger on- are related to a Masonic organization. Certainly both the oak staff sprouting leaves and the rose are symbols employed within the Scottish Rite of Masonry. They may also be representative of another military, fraternal or mystical religious organization, though; thus far my researches haven't yielded the answer. I welcome the input of historians and collectors if they recognize the symbols, particularly in this combination, and can help me add more specific information to the listing as to the decorative scheme's symbolic import. Antique Victorian Gutta Percha Trinket Box With Female Figural On Top
This is wonderful old Gutta percha box with a basket weave pattern featuring a woman in a large floppy hat carrying a basket. It measures 3.5"x 5"x 2" and has a fabric lining. Beautiful as it is. It does have a fair amount of damage, with the unhinged top being the worst. As seen in the photos it appears to have had a fabric hinge, but new metal hinges could be used to repair that. The box also has a fair amount of scuffs/chips on the corners, and there is some staining of the fabric lining as well. Also it hasn't been cleaned, as I've left that decision up to the new owner. With some T.L.C. this could once again be a wonderful useful box.

This is a rare antique Gutta percha plaque of the Nativity. I believe this to be made for France as it uses the french spelling"BETHLEEM" as opposed to the english"BETHLEHEM" As seen in the photos the plaque is in excellent shape with no damage. But could use a good cleaning. The plaque measures 7.5" from top to bottom by 6.25" at its widest point. It features Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, as well as 3 others. Gloria in excelsis Deo" Latin for"Glory to God in the highest" is printed just below the manger with"Bethleem"French for Bethlehem) just below that. The attention to detail on this piece is amazing, a true work of art.
