Description: This auction for a Barbour Silver Co. silver plate picture frame. This picture frame is in very good condition with some light scratches. The frame measures 13 3/8" tall and 9 3/4" wide. The base of the frame is marked as pictured below with the Barbour Silver Co. maker's mark and 3465. Information on Barbour Silver Despite the great interest in Barbour silver- many people own it. Apparently- information on its history is sketchy. Here's what researchers at the Connecticut Historical Society uncovered: In 1881 or 1882. Samuel Barbour moved from Chicago to New Haven, Conn. where he and his brother Charles joined in forming the Barbour Brothers Co. At this point, they were only marketers of silverplate products made by I. J. Steane& Co. of Hartford. But the brothers were operating in Hartford by no later than ... more1889, since the Geer's city directory for that year contains the listing, Barbour Bros. Co. silverplated ware mfgs. 64 Market St. Market Street, located downtown, has been altered greatly since then. In 1892. Here is a very ornate Victoria silver plate picture frame made by James W. Tuft of Boston Mass. The frame dates to the 1880-90's. The company was special for making elaborate silver plate item for the Victorian period. The frame from top to bottom is app. 10" and 6" wide. VINTAGE 1950 SILVER PLATE REPOUSSE FRAME FLORAL & VINE DESIGN w/ GLASS & BACKING
BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE 1950‘s SILVER OR SILVER PLATE FRAME WITH RAISED REPOUSSE FLORAL DESIGN. It feels like the silver/ silver plate frame is mounted over a wood-type backing. No hallmarks or maker’s marks on the frame so I am not sure what it is made of– does not react to a magnet. BUY THIS AS THOUGH IT IS SILVER PLATE– I CAN’T GUARANTEE ANYTHING ELSE. The frame weighs about 2 pounds– with glass and old cardboard backing. Brass clips to hold the backing in place. Beautiful detail to the design– vines and floral raised design all over the front of the frame. The 4 outside edges also have raised vine designs on them. The outer edges have a tooled design on the frame. The frame has some tarnish on it. Which shows off the details of the design. It might polish up all nice and shiny but I think it is better the way it is. The frame is well-made– ... morethe corners have tiny nails to join the silver/ silver plate together– see my picture of the close-up of the corners. MEASUREMENTS: From the back the opening is 4 ¼ inches by 6 ¼ inches. With an area of about 4 inches by 6 inches showing from the front. The frame is over 1 inch deep from the side. HEAVILY EMBOSSED PHOTO FRAME, MERIDEN SILVER-PLATE, ANTIQUE, VERY DETAILED (#1)
Description: Large antique Victorian quadruple silver-plated picture frame by Meriden of Meriden Connecticut. This frame has a very high-relief fleur-de-lis design and a beautifully scalloped floral edging. The patina is very old and has a subtly mottled look to it over the whole surface of the frame. The silver plate is in very good condition. There is a very old photograph in the frame. And there is glass over the picture. This frame measures 9-7/8 inches high X 8 inches wide. The viewable area measures 5-1/2 inches high X 3-7/8 inches wide. The top section of the frame is softly bent as you can see in the pictures, the most pronounced area is on the wavy area on the right hand side. This is how the frame came to us and we have not tried to do anything to it. Due to this we are selling this frame As Is, and to my eye the frame still looks ... morewonderful. Otherwise the condition of this item is very nice. On the back of the frame you have the picture box that holds the glass, photograph, metal back plate and frame. At some point, someone didnt realize that to take the picture out all you need to do is to pinch the horseshoe shaped spring inwards, and it looks like they pried it out with something like a kitchen knife, which rippled the edges of the box a little bit. But the box still functions well and holds the picture very firmly in place and the spring is strong and still functions very well. It also seems that many years ago when the picture was last put in, the metal sheet that backs the photograph was placed back on backwards. We have now turned the metal sheet around to its proper direction so that you can see the Meriden maker mark, which was facing to the interior when we purchased this frame. So the now-inner-side of the backing sheet which was facing outward for years, is the side which has the dark patina. The original outer side has been shielded from the air and is shinier, and it also has some loss of plating, you can see that in the pictures. Description: Superb antique Victorian quadruple silver-plated picture frame by Meriden of Meriden Connecticut. The entire body of the frame has an aesthetic high-relief repoussee motif of flowers and leaves. The patina is exquisite. The silver plate is in excellent condition with no visible wear. There is also an old photograph in the frame. The photograph is very old although judging by the womans clothing probably not as old as the frame. I do not know who the woman is. The glass in the frame is the original bevel-edged glass. This frame measures 6-1/4 inches high X 5-1/2 inches wide. The viewable area measures 3-3/4 inches X 2-3/4 inches. On the back of the frame there was originally a hinged stand that is no longer there, and there is a replacement stand which is very old. The solder point that holds this replacement stand has lifted, ... moreand while it is holding at the moment, we can not vouch for how much longer it will last, and the stand is in As Is condition, you will need to replace it. Since the metal plate in back of the photograph lifts out as a separate piece, it is a simple thing to have a new stand made. The only other thing we would like to point out on the condition is that the upper right corner of the box on the back of the frame that holds the picture, has an open corner seam. You can have this closed back up but you do not need to at all, since the function of the box is not affected at all and you will never see this on a table since it is on the back of the frame. The heavy wire spring that holds the picture in the box is original to the frame and is in excellent condition. On the metal plate in back of the picture is the circular mark that says MERIDAN SILVER PLATE CO. QUADRUPLE PLATED with the lion logo inside the circle of words. Above that is impressed PATENTED JAN 14 1890. Below that is the number 5, probably the model number. This is an absolutely fantastic frame.
