Nice Newcomb Macklin Frame, French Style!
A nice French Style swept Newcomb Macklin frame. Stamped verso and crayon marked in the typical N.M. manner. Opening is 14 x 18 inches. Molding with linen mat measures 3.25 inches wide. Overall gilded finish is very nice. There are 3 surface chips to mention, one located at lower middle left, and one to either side of the frame which are very small, all easily repairable. Vintage NEWCOMB MACKLIN French Style ROCOCO Picture Frame MidCentury 1950s 20 x 24 ins. Insert Rare frame Here is a large Mid-Century gesso and wood picture frame. Made in the French Rococo style. In total it measures 26 x 30 1/4 ins. the insert for your art is 20 x 24 ins. The depth of the inner ledge is about 1/2 inch. When I turned this frame over to photograph it, I noticed the splines/joinery corner pieces, which is constructed like Newcomb Macklin made their frames. I do not see a mark or stamp on this, but it could have been knocked off if it was a tag or label years ago.Without a stamp or mark I was not positive it was Newcombe Macklin but a knowledgeable framer wrote me and told me it definitely is, that it is Pattern no. 7217 and finish M590. The frame is made of composition( gesso) And wood. The gesso is painted with a red bole ... moreunderlay, and then white/beige and gold paint over that. It is in fair/good as is condition. It does have areas of gesso loss, to the right side back edge in a few areas, and down the back edge of the frame( most of the gesso is knocked off one side back ledge) This can be professionally restored if it bothers you, or left as is. The back of the frame has pencil notations about paint finishes, and what looks like a item number, and the measurements 20 x 24.The frame is quite heavy and solid. It will have to be shipped in a large box to protect the gesso. I bought this with a late 1950s oil portrait inside. And some I would date this to the 1950s time period.Perfect for French, Rococo, Newcomb Macklin collectors, and Mid-century Hollywood Regency decors. Any questions. Excellent c1930s Newcomb Macklin style Arts and Crafts frame. Fantastic mottled. Worn red and gold surface on the cushion style molding with stepped inner and outer edges. Outstanding condition with minor wear. Great quality frame measuring 20 3/4 x 24 3/4 with a standard 16 x 20 rabbet. Beautiful frame.and a tough find. You won't be disappointed.
