The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors with the diamond-shaped lower part called mbulu-ngulu; these rather two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes. On baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure. The bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright. Thanks to the diversity of the groups, scattered over a vast area, a great variety of different styles of figures has developed, some of them endogenous and some influenced by neighboring styles. Kota figures represent an extremely stylized human body. Reduced to shoulders and“arms, in emptied lozenge shape, surmounted by a large face framed by an ample coiffure with hanging tresses. The face, always oval, may be concave(female) convex(male) or concave-convex, with a forehead in quarter-sphere(also male) The reliquaries were kept outside the homes, in huts at the edge of the village. I read that these carved wood frames also have plaster/gesso, which this looks to by the photos. The interior dimension(the'shelf' that holds the painting) is 19" x 13.5" so you would lose about.5 inch from that in the viewable area. The external dimension is 30.5" x 25" The carvings project/protrude approx 3.5" depth) It would be ideal if you could pick it up. Vintage HUGE MODERNISM Mid-Century Gold Heavy Pine Wood Frame 26 x 30 c.1940s
Here is a very large. Heavy custom/hand-made pine picture frame. It measures 33 x 36 ins. in total and 26 x 30 ins. insert rabbet size. This is painted gold( not gilded) with an old original red paint or bole undercoat. This frame used to house a late 1940s oil portrait. So I would date this to the same time period to very early 1950s time period. The frame has multiple pieces of wood nailed and glued together. And at the top right corner someone nailed some more in to secure it at some point in time.That has caused a surface crack in the wood from the top right corner and the downward piece of wood about 4 x 7 ins. That can be re-glued and fixed if it bothers you. Shown below. It is very sturdy. Heavy and solid. The molding is 4 1/2 ins. wide. Very heavy, vintage hand-carved picture frame.I have been informed by a knowledeable frame collector that this is a vintage reproduction of a 17th C Louis XIII Style Lely Portrait Frame. It used to house a 1920s oil portrait. So I would date it to the 1920-30s time period. The frame is carved out a heavy wood, measures 37 1/8 x 47 1/2 x 5 ins. The inner rabbet insert size is 30 5/8 x 40 5/8 ins. A 30 x 40 inch painting would work in here. The frame is in fair/good as is vintage condition with wear to the finish. Scrapes, minor chips, all common with age. It is still very solid and is very heavy. The artwork that was in here originally was marked Made in Belgium. So very possibly the frame was also made there.It could be English also. There is no marking on it, any old tag has long gone away. This is a fabulous antique solid wood frame. The original glass has a painted black and gold mat applied on the backside of the glass. The frame measures 31" by 24.25" and weighs 12 pounds. The inside area that shows inside the glass mat measures 16.5" by 10.75" The overall condition is good. There are pieces of the tiny sawtooth plaster design missing on the inside edge of the frame.
