Antique 19th c English Wooden Sewing Box w/ Unusual Trompe L'oeil Grain Painting
DESCRIPTION: Very unusual 19th c English sewing box. Measures about 10" long and 6.8 wide and 5" tall and it is a typical size sewing box. Comes from a local Dallas estate. Guaranteed antique[made before 1900] and obviously antique as shown and check out the pics and know that you won't be disappointed. At first glance, appears to be some type of exotic wood, but on close examination the dark/light color variations in the wood do not follow the grain and please see pics#2 and#3 and note how the"grain" on the sides is exactly the same. Appears to actually be some type of common European fruit or nut wood[probably apple or gum] that has been grain painted and stained to resemble precious kingwood or calamander-wood. This was originally done in the trompe l'oeil spirit in order to upgrade the box and fool the eye, ... morebut now the piece comes across as interesting and unique in its own right. There is an English Painter George Turner II who painted similar country landscapes. However, I was not able to match ... morethis signature to him. Regardless, this fine English Country Landscape Oil Painting depicts a farm wagon and a grain mill with a waterwheel. In the background you can just see a flock of sheep. The foreground has a small pond with ducks and a swan. In our close up photographs you will see an old stable craquelar to this painting and on the right hand side, just above the sheep, there are a couple of long stable cracks to the paint. This painting has a varnished surface and we did find one small in-painted restoration, near the swan, which you can see in the close-up photograph. There are no other problems or restorations and the 23 ¼” by 33 ¼” vintage frame compliments this 19th century oil painting nicely.
