There are lots of delicious scrolling shapes. Typical of the French Rococo or Rocaille style. There is no glass in the frame and on the rear it is a piece of thick card that backs the frame. It works perfectly well but I do not imagine it is original. There is some rubbing back of the gilding to show the bronze underneath. Auction 19C Micromosaic Champlevé Frame by Cesare Roccheggiani This listing is for possibly the finest picture frame you will ever seen(29 pictures below) It is a 19th Century(third quarter of the 1800's) picture frame by Cesare Roccheggiani. It consists of a central micromosaic plaque depicting Saint Peters Square. The plaque is held in a magnificent gilt bronze and Champleve frame. The plaque swings open to reveal the picture within the frame. The rear of the swinging door is lined in silk and marked C.ROCCHEGGIANI. ROMA(Rome Italy) Total height is about 14 inches. It is about 8 1/2 inches wide. The micromosaic plaque is about 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches(including the black stone edge) Excluding the stone edge. It is about 6 1/4 x 3 1/2 inches. It is quite heavy, at about 2.5 kg. Very good condition. The only flaws I can find is some ... moreroughness to the edge of the black stone rim that surrounds the micromosaic plaque. This is hidden inside the frame. So hard to see(please see the pictures below) I can't tell if the edge has been slightly notched as part of the manufacture(likely the case, as the same"notches are on the top and bottom of the plaque edge- under the gilt bronze plaque frame. Otherwise fine. This is a stunning example. I have attached auction records below. After the pictures. In 2010 Christies sold a micromosaic plaque by this artist for USD $ 737.948, In 2012 Christies sold a pair of far less interesting, and much smaller micromosaic picture frames by this artist for USD $14,653(see below for details) This is the real deal, and its priced to sell. I had some reservation in parting with this piece because it simply exudes quality. Character and was executed so well when made. Not to mention, I bet this piece has a story- if it could talk! As if the frame with easel back wasn't great enough. There is also this antique photo inside of a Victorian lady and her children. The whole piece is in exquisite shape with little ware to the frame. It does have just 1 prong back missing. But the other 3 are there to keep photo in place. The frame back is numbered, but I can't make it out. Very ornate, gilded and measures 10.5" tall with it being 6.25" across. The photo does have some damage on the back- in terms of the hard back it is attached too.
