This is an excellent c1840 American red stained primitive frame. Beautiful original dry. Red surface with nice patina and minor wear. Slightly canted molding with flat top outer edge. Mitered and lap joined corners with square nail construction and an early tin hanger. Frame measures 15 3/8 x 17 7/8 with a 13 3/8 x 15 7/8 rabbet. Found in central Pa. This is an excellent very early American black painted primitive frame. Hard to date these early styles but my best guess would be late 18th century up until through the first quarter of the 19th century. Earlier than the standard canted molding styles of the currier and ives frames.and similar to the c1800 simple miniature black frames. Beautiful original dry. Crusty black surface with nice patina and minor wear. Flat molding with narrow. Channeled cushion(convex) molded site liner. Pinned corners(typical of Pa construction) with solid lap joints and original hanging loop. Frame measures 14 1/8 x 18 1/8 with an 11 7/8 x 16 rabbet. Found in central Pa. A quality.
