Antique Victorian Charcoal Portrait of Man, Oak & Elegant Gold Gilt Gesso Frame
This is a nice 19th c charcoal portrait of a handsome gentleman in the original frame with original wavy glass. The frame is excellent with wide outer border and narrow inner border in elegant gold gilt gesso and a middle border in medium-dark stained oak. There is very little to no gesso or paint loss. The gold gilding is original and quite darkened and spotty in some areas from age. The back is covered with a wood panel with wooden reinforcement slats over the top. The eye hooks and hanging wire are no longer intact. The portrait is in good condition. The charcoal is bold, not smudged or faded, but there is some staining on the paper, mainly on the lower right corner, and some light spottiness elsewhere. The outer measurements of the frame are 21 7/8" x 25 7/8" and the portrait measures 16" x 20" It will be packed very ... morewell. Double boxed, and insured during shipping.

Ornate 19th C Wood/Gesso Frame w/Undocumented Charcoal Portrait Ulysses S. Grant
For your consideration is a very ornate 19th Century gilt gesso over wood frame. It measures approximately 29-1/2" x 25-1/2" x 2" The opening of the center frame is approximately 19-1/2" x 15-1/2" We will have to let the experts decide on age. Style, origin, and the like. We have received an expert opinion dating the frame to the mid-19th century, it is gilt gesso over wood, and American. It is beautifully designed and looks to have acanthus leaves included. As you can see from the images there are small places of loss on the bottom corners. If there is loss anywhere else, I cannot see it. With regard to the portrait. It is my understanding that some people call them charcoal photo portraits meaning that the artist used some form of photographic technique that left a vague image and then it was colored in with charcoal ... moreand crayons. I find that somewhat confusing, so again, I will have to yield to the experts on which description is correct. We do not know for certain, nor are we guaranteeing that this is Ulysses S. Grant. VINTAGE ORIGINAL CHARCOAL PORTRAIT IN TIGERWOOD GLASSED FRAME
This is an original charcoal with some pencil. It is a very staunch looking portrait of some unhappy people. There are some markings of numbers and words on the back inside. But I'm not familiar with any of them. There is also a name that looks like Renoir, but I'm sure its not the famous artist! I checked the web and did not see any of his charcoals that resembled this portrait. It is very well done and whom ever did it, definitely knew how to use charcoal. It is also so well preserved for what seems to be a very old portrait. We just had no way of dating it. I have an idea from the hair and clothing, but I would not want to opinionate on it.
