BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE WOOD FRAME FLORAL CARVED AND GILDED IN GOOD CONDITION- OUTSIDE MEASUREMENTS from the front corners are 11 ¼ INCHES by 13 ¼ INCHES. MEASURED FROM THE FRONT) Frame is circa 1940’s. Maybe earlier. Frame is wood with applied gesso carving. Gold tone finish is almost like a glaze. With a dark background contrast that really emphasizes the floral carving. Original gold gilt on the frame. Condition is good– no pieces of the gesso carving missing. Frame has glass(opening for the glass is 8 inches by 10 inches) and old wood backing. A few remnants of paper covering that must have been on the back. The frame could be used vertically or horizontally. The opening on the back of the frame that holds the glass and backing is almost 3/4 of an inch deep– deep enough to hold a wood stretcher if you wanted to put a painting in the ... moreframe. Frame is almost 1 inch deep. Measured from the outside. The frame and mirror are circa 1970’s– maybe earlier. Beveled glass mirror is in good condition– no scratches. No cracks, no chips– I blocked it in the pictures to avoid glare. About 1/2 inch of the bevel shows all around the front edges. The gold tone frame– maybe gold leaf– is in good condition. Some dust accumulation on the front– the reason for the slight gray on the photo. The frame is wood. With an applied gesso carving. Carved border around the opening for the mirror. Curved outer edges with a large design in each corner and small design on each side. Frame is tight– no wiggles or spaces at the corners. Old cardboard backing. The frame is approx. 5.25" tall including the ball feet and not the loop on top. The frame is approx. 4" wide and the opening is approx. 3.5" long by approx. 2.25" wide. Antique Floral Carved Victorian Picture Frame Original Glass Black Forest Style
Up for auction is an antique 19th Century folk art Black Forest style picture frame. With what appears to be original glass, recently found at auction in the Chester County, PA area. It is found in good used condition. There are half flower style flower carvings in a repeating pattern form. It may be hand carved. Regardless, it is of very fine quality. This frame will accommodate any 5 1/2" x 11" The overall size of the entire frame is approximately 10" x 15 1/2" in size. There are a few air bubbles in the glass, indicating age. The hanging wire is missing and will need to be replaced. There are some losses to the original finish is some areas. This is seen in the photos. It has wide. Thick moldings that measure 4" wide. There are 3 different designs on the frame. The outer design is 2" wide- It has a carved design of flowers& leaves with carved/cut holes. The next design is 1" wide- it has a carved design of trailing flowers& leaves. The inner design is 1" wide- it has a carved design of small flowers& leaves. We do not see any makers marks or names. The back of the frame is a dark aged wood- this is an old frame. The i nside rabbet measurements are 20 1/4" x 16 1/4" The outside frame measurements are 27" x 23 1/4" The moulding measures 4" wide and is approx ... more1" thick. This frame weighs approx 4 1/2 lbs. A lovely antique frame with great age patina and character! The frame was finished with gold leaf that has mostly long since faded. The wood has no cracks or structural damage except one corner on the back has a split/chip(see photo) As you can see in our pictures. The gesso finish has some losses. We have made no attempt to clean it the frame so as to preserve the age patina. Please look at our pictures and ask any questions you may have. Antique Black Forest Wood Floral Frame Elaborately Carved German Heraldic Flower
This auction is for a stunning antique Black Forest frame. As you can see. Every part of this frame is heavily embellished in the naturalistic style. There are overlapping flowers of several different kinds at the top and bottom with heraldic style scrolled and beaded carvings in the corners. Smaller marquees are cuffing the sides and bottom of the central oval with a more elaborate marquee monogrammed top center. The monogram appears to be either ZC or CZ. The central oval is also heavily carved with an overlapping/scaled leaf and berry design. The frame is in very good condition for its age and intricacy. If you look very closely, you can see that the varnish has crazing. Because every aspect of the frame is hand-carved, there are some asymmetries between the right and left sides. At the very top center, it looks like there may have been ... morea leaf over the top of two blossoms on the right(see tenth picture) but the rough end is under the original glaze. There is a small, unglazed chip on the tip of a leaf top right(not visible when viewing the frame head-on but shown from the top in the last picture) There is also a chip to a leaf edge in the bottom left corner that is hidden behind the carving on top of it. When you enlarge the picture of the back, you can see that this was carved and assembled in pieces of varying sizes and the joints between pieces are nearly indiscernible on the face but clean and clear on the back(one of the joints that is visible on the face is shown in the eleventh picture) The frame measures a sizable 27" x 22 1/2" The inside dimensions of the picture opening are approximately 19" x 13" Shipping reflects the size and delicacy of the piece. This piece is in overall good antique condition. With some wear from age to the frame. It has some normal signs of wear from usage and age over the years, some finish wear and areas with chips/nicks to the edges and back, as shown. Very nice piece overall, I have no way of dating it, but it's an early piece. I believe the print inside is some kind of magazine or newspaper cutout. I'm not sure if it's gesso or not, but that's what it appears to be to me. Please look closely at the pictures, as they show the condition better than can be described. Great estate find!
