This auction is for an Antique Vintage VICTORIAN c 1900 Original Print by the Artist. J. James) Ross Bryson(1856-1918) entitled, Miss Viola” according to the writing on the back of the print. It is a beautiful yardlong of a young woman with glorious shabby cabbage roses. It is a Rare find and I have never seen another one like it and of this perfection and caliber. The frame I believe is original to the piece and a dark oak with a great patina. This Original“Poster” apparently was part of an Advertising Campaign for a particular Beauty Cream at the time– Dr. Hebra’s Viola Cream. The beauty cream was.50 a jar& if a lady sent in the jar label plus $2.50 she would receive this“poster” according to the print on the back of the poster. The Larkin company(soap& cosmetics co. also offered posters and the like as promotions for their products. ... moreAs well. About the artist: JRB was born in 1856 in Jamestown. Quebec. James and his sister traveled to Europe to study art. They later moved to Chicago. Where J. Ross remained throughout his professional career. Bryson’s early were works were mainly oil on canvas, produced in black and white. His later works were done in pastels. Much of Bryson’s artwork appeared on magazine covers. Calendars, postcards and advertising. He did work for the S.S. Porter Co. of Chicago. The A.F. Kern Co. of Chicago, the H.A. Aronson Company and he was a well known artist for the Thomas D. Murphy Calendar Co. of Red Oak, Iowa. Bryson’s works were very risqué for the time. It is rumored that earl on. Bryson ran errands for a house of ill repute, which gave him access to many of the beautiful young women depicted in his artwork. He was paid $200 per commission for his works. James Ross Bryson passed away in 1918. Bryson was a prolific. Extremely gifted artist and a master of pastels. He was known for his strong use of color.
