The memento here shown is entirely worked in human hair(within the frame) and it is one of the larger of these we ever find. The oval frame is 9.5" x 8.15" and with the deep bomb glass. It's approximately 1.5" deep. I'm assuming this is a young woman's locks, though it is true that a boy's hair was grown long until the age of 5, at which time ... morehis hair was cut short and he began to wear'britches' or pants and was now his father's son rather than his mama's baby, and we have seen hair ornaments done with notation that they are the hair of the son at age 5, upon his transition to being a big boy. Whether girl or boy, this certainly represents a full cut of long hair. No gray at all in that light chestnut braid, so we know it's a young person or child's hair. The other possibility is that it is the shorn hair of a young daughter who enters a convent as novitiate and has her long beautiful hair cut short. That is another way these mementos have meaning. There is another lock of hair that may be that of the mother, as it's darker and has some gray- see our images. These are a bit macabre, some would say, but remember that in a time when few could afford photographer, the lock of hair kept might well represent the only remaining aspect of a person's life, apart from memories. And these became precious as well as fashionable in their time. Blonde Weeping Willow. Brunette Cypress and Monument With Initials"SL" French Mid-Nineteenth Century Mourning Hair Art. Sentimental Art, Memento Mori, Antique 5 1/2" high. 5 3/8" wide Scene made from human hair on a background painted in lovely blue and pink tones is under domed glass with a goldtone edge and dark stained wooden frame. A monument with the initials"SL" sits between a willow made from blonde hair and a cypress made from brown hair. Some hair has come undone and floats in the frame but does not effect the lovliness of the image. There is some dust inside the domed glass and I would imagine it could be cleaned but I would not personally be willing to disrupt the paper on the back. Frame has a few nicks but is otherwise in amazing condition given its age. Rare Victorian Wreath REAL HAIR ART Shadow Box Museum Piece ANTIGUE painting
You are bidding on a extremely rare and hard to find Victorian Hair Art/Picture that is in a Shadow Box. This piece is in excellent condition and has several different colors of hair. They used real hair to make the wreath of beautiful flowers. This art was made some time between the 1400 and 1800's. The glass has bubbles in it which also shows the time table. Antique Victorian Late 18th Century Mourning Hair Art
This mourning hair art came to us through my husband's grandmother. It was discovered after his mother past away. There was no information with it but he remembers being with his grandmother. These hair art pieces were created from the hair of a loved one who has passed away. I can't tell if it was one type of hair or more types. The framing was done by attaching a box to the back side of the oval frame and attaching it. This is where most of the damage is. Around the box. Victorian Sepia Hair Art Mourning Picture of Castle
This piece is the most unique piece I have ever seen. It was purchased in France many years ago. The seller said at the time it was thought to be a representation of the Castle of Rouen. Which may or may not be accurate. The Castle of Rouen is the castle where Joan of Arc was imprisoned. It is a wonderfully executed hair art picture of a castle no matter which castle it is. The picture depicts the castle set in mountainous terrain. There is a village at the base of mountains on the other side of the river from the castle. A boat is floating in the river in between. There are birds circling the turret on the castle. In the foreground is very desolate landscaping with what appears to be a building or home set above a walk way leading up to it. All this is created from hair. The hair art is done using the sepia technique. This is the largest ... morepiece that I've personally seen using this technique. This picture has two layers to it. The hair art is done on a piece of glass that is set slightly elevated above the colored background which looks to be some sort of paper. Which gives depth to the picture. The hair used is tones of brown for the most part. The tones and shades of brown are what gives the dimension and defines the shapes. The buildings, castle and landscaping are all from hair. The hair is many different lengths and color tones. The size is 9" x 13" for the hair art portion and the ornate frame measures 16" x 20" The frame has a small loss of the decorative wood trim around the edge of the glass. But is still in pretty good condition considering it's age. This is an outstanding piece of hair art and is what would be a centerpiece for a collection of hair art.

SIGNED Antique HAIR ART Under SHADOW BOX Walnut FRAME Names PEOPLE
17" long x 14.5" high x 4" deep This is possibly the BEST piece of HAIR ART that I've had in 45 years of dealing with antiques. Not only are there many shades of human hair but EACH AND EVERY PIECE HAS A PAPER WRAPPED AROUND THE STEMS WITH THE NAME OF THE PERSON TO WHOM THE HAIR ONCE BELONGED. I started to count the stems then realized they were all named. Since the hair is under glass. I'm not able to read many of the inked names. The hair is wired up against ivory silk fabric and set within an oval deep walnut shadow box frame. In the 15 years I've owned this art, I have never removed the back but it has been removed at some point in it's 150+ life since I see hammer scuffing on the antique pine board backing.
